Hollywood icon and long-time Tibet supporter Richard Gere is in Dharamshala this week to join celebrations marking the 90th birthday of the 14th Dalai Lama, scheduled officially for July 6 as per the Gregorian calendar.
Gere, who embraced Buddhism after first meeting the Dalai Lama in India in 1978, recalled a deeply personal and inspiring moment from one of his conversations with His Holiness.
'Once I went to the Dalai Lama when I was feeling very tired," Gere shared on Thursday. 'I asked His Holiness, 'Can I stop now?' He said, 'Yes, you can stop when I stop — which is never.' This is not a commitment for one lifetime. This is many lifetimes of commitment, not just for Tibet, but for the people of Tibet who have been highly abused for many decades by the Chinese Communist Party."
