Corporators demand cleaning of drains

Kanpur: Many corporators in a meeting held with mayor Pramila Pandey complained of poor progress of desilting of nullahs and cleaning of drains in their wards and blamed encroachments at several places for the tardy desilting process. The mayor on Monday called a meeting of the corporators and the officials to discuss the issues pertaining to water-logging and cleaning of drains and nullahs at Kanpur Municipal Corporation headquarters. Anand Shukla, corporator of ward 35 (Kalyanpur North), complained that 70 percent work had been completed but one big nullah had not been cleaned so far. Zonal officer RK Singh informed that this work could not be completed because residents of one lane were not allowing the staff to open the nullah due to a lot of encroachments. Corporator of ward 43 (Nawabganj) Raj Kishore said people had encroached the nullah at four places due to which cleaning had not taken place near Geeta Park for the last two years. Moreover, sewer lines of a few lanes were also choked. Ghanshyam Gupta, corporator ward 33 (Vijay Nagar), claimed that Mahatma Gandhi Road nullah was not cleaned.
