MANGALURU: The Swachh Survekshan Grameen (SSG) 2025 survey, a nationwide rural sanitation assessment undertaken by the Union Ministry of Jal Shakti through the Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation, will begin in Dakshina Kannada district on July 7. Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat CEO Dr Anandh K has appealed to residents and officials in villages to extend their cooperation to ensure the survey's success. The survey aims to evaluate the progress of villages and districts based on sanitation indicators laid out under the Swachh Bharat Mission-Grameen (SBM-G) Phase II guidelines. It will be carried out in Dakshina Kannada district from Monday. For this exercise, the Central Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation has appointed the Academy of Management Studies (AMS), Lucknow, as the survey agency, Dr Anandh said. AMS team members will visit Gram Panchayats to assess sanitation sustainability, focusing on the use of individual and community/public toilets, as well as the management of liquid and solid waste and overall cleanliness. The survey team will inspect Gram Panchayat offices, schools, Anganwadis, public spaces, markets, and bus stops. They will also hold discussions with Gram Panchayat officials, members of Self Help Groups (SHGs), and Village Water and Sanitation Committee (VWSC) members. The team may visit any Gram Panchayat in the district, and all concerned officials and staff are required to be present with complete records and relevant information to assist the team, the CEO added.

Mangaluru: Upon reviewing the progress of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Programme, it was found that compared to other districts, the progress in Dakshina Kannada is significantly lower. ZP CEO Dr Anandh K instructed child development project officers to focus more on swift progress in the nutrition supply program. He was speaking at a district-level coordination committee meeting of the department of women and child development held on Thursday. There are 20 children with severe malnutrition in the district, and they should be admitted to the Nutrition Rehabilitation Centre (NRC) for better care, and emphasised the need to make DK, a malnutrition-free district. He directed the officials to expedite the maintenance of anganwadi centres under the Anganwadi Building Maintenance Scheme. Child development project officers were advised to regularly inspect the Anganwadi building work. Referring to two cases of child marriage registered in the district from July to December 2024, the CEO instructed that necessary actions should be taken regarding cases of child marriage and teenage pregnancies found in the district. Mandatory ward committee meetings should be held within the gram panchayat jurisdiction to discuss and take appropriate measures to prevent child marriages and teenage pregnancies, he said. If child marriage is found, complaints should be made to the 1098 helpline. Awareness workshops should be conducted to prevent child marriage and teenage pregnancies, he said. A total of 13 dowry cases have been registered in the district, with 11 cases currently under investigation, he said, adding that awareness programs about the dowry prohibition act should be organised regularly. Senior civil judge & member secretary, district legal service authority Zaibunnisa, deputy director of women and child development department, Usman A, Prajna Counselling Centre director Hilda Rayappan and others were present.

Mangaluru/ Udupi: Measures should be taken to control infectious diseases by providing safe drinking water and food to customers in hotels, lodges, bars and restaurants, said ZP CEO Anandh K. He spoke while presiding over the District Surveillance Committee meeting held at the Dakshina Kannada ZP. He emphasised the need to periodically test drinking water samples to confirm quality, follow necessary purification protocols, regularly clean public water sources, chlorinate them, and ensure the residual chlorine level with departmental cooperation to control waterborne diseases. Measures should also be taken to prevent migrant workers from contaminating public water sources. Continuous communication with the health department is essential to discuss and decide on the city's cleanliness and the situation and control of potential infectious diseases, he added. Furthermore, vaccination for domestic animals, especially rabies vaccination, should be organised extensively. ‘Amara' green drive starts on World Environment Day

Mangaluru: A city-wide plantation campaign under the 'Amara' banner started at the new DC office premises on the occasion of World Environment Day on Thursday. Deputy commissioner and Zilla Panchayat CEO Anandh K inaugurated the programme by planting a tree in the DC office premises. Anandh said that under the leadership of Prof Smitha Hegde, environmental enthusiasts organised a campaign named 'Amara', where various organisations in the district identified suitable areas for planting and nurturing trees. He noted that with the onset of the rainy season, the climate is ideal for planting trees. He noted that the increasing exploitation of nature is damaging the environment and affecting daily lives. Hence, there is a need to increase the greenery on Earth, he said. Deputy conservator of forests Anthony S Mariyappa said that in Dakshina Kannada forest area, 5 lakh trees are planted annually. This year, the forest department is distributing 1 lakh saplings through various organisations for planting in different locations. He highlighted that every year, millions of trees are cut down for various development projects. In response, the forest department undertakes tree planting activities. For the development of the road between Mangaluru and Bengaluru, about 1,39,000 trees were cut down over an area of approximately 100 acres. He emphasised that while development is important, it is our responsibility to maintain ecological balance by planting and nurturing trees. Prof Smitha Hegde, director of research at CFAL and a key figure in the 'Amara' campaign, said that under the 'Amara' initiative, the goal is to plant 10,000 trees in the Dakshina Kannada by August this year. With the cooperation of various organisations, 4,500 locations have already been identified. Trees will be planted along the road from Baliga Stores in the city to the airport road, while 350 trees will be planted in the DC office premises. The focus is on planting fruit trees like jackfruit, mango, and breadfruit that grow locally, she said. The event was attended by additional deputy commissioner Santhosh Kumar G, Mangaluru City Corporation commissioner Ravichandra Nayak, deputy director of the animal husbandry department Dr Arun Kumar Shetty, environmental enthusiast Jeeth Milan Roche, and key members of various environmental organisations.

Mangaluru/Udupi: Ahead of Bakrid, the district administrations and police in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi held official meetings to prevent illegal cattle transportation and slaughter in the districts. Deputy commissioners Anandh K of Dakshina Kannada and Vidya Kumari K of Udupi instructed police to form teams and set up checkposts to prevent illegal transportation of cattle. The DK DC directed the Mangaluru City police to form teams in the city and outskirts. People may contact 112 if they come across any illegal activities, the DC said, and directed the police department to ensure the secrecy of the informers. Officials informed that checkposts have been opened at all district and state borders in Dakshina Kannada. Meanwhile, meetings involving religious leaders are being conducted in each police station in the district. Directions have been given to police stations to warn individuals who are likely to create disturbances during the festival. Additional police force will be deputed to sensitive areas, officials said. The meeting resolved to invoke provisions under the Karnataka Prevention of Slaughter and Preservation of Cattle Ordinance 2020 to attach properties, if illegal cattle slaughter is reported, those who transport cattle illegally and slaughter them will be sentenced to 3–10 years of jail or a penalty to the tune of Rs 10 lakh under the law. City Police commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy and Dakshina Kannada SP Arun K were present. Udupi DC Vidya Kumari held a meeting and directed district and taluk-level committees to actively work to prevent the unauthorised slaughter and transportation of cattle. "Since there is a possibility of illegal transportation and slaughter of cattle, buffaloes, calves, and camels during the Bakrid festival, inspection teams comprising various officials have been formed across the district to prevent it. The appointed officials should coordinate with each other and actively work within their jurisdiction. The teams formed at the taluk level should meet, discuss control measures, and take action," she said, adding that the Bakrid festival should be conducted peacefully and harmoniously. Udupi SP Hariram Shankar said that checkposts will operate 24 hours a day, throughout the district.
