TN schools to ring water bells, circular soon

KRISHNAGIRI: The School Education Department in Tamil Nadu will soon send circulars to schools asking to commence the 'water bell' programme, announced Minister of School Education Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi on Friday. The water bell initiative, which is followed in a few southern states and Puducherry, aims to promote timely intake of drinking water by students to avoid dehydration. "The Kerala government has been carrying out the water bell initiative for the past two years. In Tamil Nadu, our teachers have been verbally instructing the students to drink more water. Considering the well-being of the children, we have been the first to launch the "Chief Minister's Breakfast Scheme". Soon we will send circulars instructing schools to commence the water bell initiative," said Minister of School Education Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi at a press meet. Prior to the press meet, the minister participated in the inauguration of the 'STEM Innovation and Learning Centre' in eight schools in Krishnagiri. "Sixteen STEM innovation centres and learning centres have been opened in Krishnagiri district at a cost of Rs 4.44 crore. Out of the 83 STEM innovation centres in the country, Tamil Nadu has 33, and of these, 16 are in Hosur. Students would learn through practical hands-on learning in fields of science, engineering, IT, and other sectors," the minister said. The minster also participated in a conference organised by teachers of the Tamil Nadu Urdu Primary and Middle School. "Urdu is not a foreign language. It is an Indian language with beautiful literature. As per the 2001 survey, over 6% of the population, roughly around 52 million people, speak Urdu in India," Anbil Mahesh noted. Later, the minister also participated in the State Level Achievement Survey (SLAS) events at Mookandapalli, Hosur and Adhiyamankottai in Dharmapuri. "The SLAS aims to improve the performance of teachers and schools for the betterment of students' education," the minister stated. The minister also announced that over 2,346 vacancies for teachers would be filled soon.

Water bell system will be implemented in TN govt schools soon: School education minister

KRISHNAGIRI: A water bell system would be implemented in schools for the welfare of students, Tamil Nadu school education minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi said on Friday. The minister was speaking to reporters in Hosur. In response to a question about introducing the Water Bell system to ensure that children in govt schools drink water regularly, he said this good initiative is already in practice in Kerala. Kerala introduced the system last year. It involves ringing a bell twice a day -- at 10.30 am and 2.30pm -- in all schools to remind students of drinking water. "When it comes to health and wellness, Tamil Nadu govt introduced the breakfast scheme, reflecting our concern for students' wellbeing. Similarly, a circular will soon be issued to implement the water bell scheme in govt schools," he said. He said more than 2,381 govt schools are conducting LKG classes in the state. 'In many schools, teachers are voluntarily taking LKG classes. Since Hosur has a multilingual population, special attention will be given to this area. Steps will be taken to introduce LKG classes in all schools soon," he added.

Will instruct schools on water bell initiative, says Minister

School Education Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi on Friday said that circulars will be sent to all the schools on introducing the water bell initiative in Tamil Nadu, like in Kerala. Speaking to reporters, the Minister praised the Kerala government initiative, the water bell, which ensures students drink water at regular intervals. 'The Kerala government has implemented the scheme for the past two years. The Tamil Nadu government is providing morning breakfast to the students. We will send circulars to all the schools in Tamil Nadu regarding the water bell initiative,' the Minister added. Earlier at a function organised at Hosur Government Urdu Higher Secondary School in Krishnagiri district, the Minister inaugurated STEM Innovation and Learning Centres at 16 schools in the district at a cost of ₹4.44 crore under Corporate Social Responsibility funds. Mr. Mahesh said that there are 83 STEM Innovation and Learning Centres across India. Of those, 33 are in Tamil Nadu and 16 centres are in the Krishnagiri district. The American India Foundation, in collaboration with the School Education Department, has set up these centres with the aim of promoting hands-on, inquiry-based learning in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Students are provided with robotics kits, 3D printers, coding skills, and digital tools to develop critical thinking and innovation skills. Aiming to address early literacy challenges through the Literacy Training Centre, it focuses on basic literacy development among primary school students. It uses structured teaching methods and individualised support to help children achieve grade-level proficiency in reading and writing, he added. Stating that technology is not equal to a teacher teaching a lesson in front of 40 students in a classroom, the Minister said that teachers use various learning tools to make the subjects easy for students to understand. Therefore, students should listen to the instructions given by the teachers and follow them. Parents should not compare their children with other students. Since every student has different talents, teachers and parents should discover and bring out the talents they have, he added. Speaking at the Urdu Teachers' Conference, the Minister said that, as per the 2001 census, in India there are 52 million Urdu-speaking people, which is 6% of the country's population. Urdu is one of the oldest languages. There are many literary works and poems in Urudu. Many Urdu poems explain life's philosophy. Former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi had said that Urdu was an Indian language. Government will always protect Urdu-speaking people, the Minister said.
