Principled young Greta Thunberg is an inspiration for all ages

Who was this strangely determined, highly principled and utterly focused young woman? Admittedly she seemed a little bit weird, but there was no doubting her passion. I wanted to write about her at once, but momentarily forgot her name. So I had to Google her. Which is why '16-year-old Swedish schoolgirl' is still in my browsing history. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Joking aside, her commitment to her beliefs put the adult world to shame. And it still does today. In her mid teens, she organised a global school strike against the climate emergency. For someone of such a tender age to take on the establishment was remarkable, as was her ability to politicise millions of her peers. Every Friday, a worldwide army of principled teenagers took to the streets. They did so to warn older generations about the horrors that lay ahead if action were not taken quickly. I would never have had the courage or gumption to anything like that when I was that age. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad When I was 16, quite a few of us would go on strike on a Friday, but there was never any overarching political agenda to our action. It usually involved smoking at bus stops. We would have loved to have had a just cause for our skiving. We would never have thought about taking the moral high ground while playing truant. At the time, a lot of people predicted that Greta would crash and burn once she grew up. 'Wait until she goes to uni and discovers sex and drugs' they said. That doesn't appear to have happened. Last week, aiming to shame western governments into taking action against the inhumane Israeli blockade of Gaza, she was arrested trying to smuggle aid into the country on a small boat. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Some dismissed it as a stunt and called it 'the selfie ship'. Of course it was a stunt. That was the point. Her principles and passion shame our elected politicians. For most people her age, a 'stunt' would involve sticking a traffic cone on a statue.

Austria beats France and Denmark routs Hungary at ice hockey worlds

In Herning, Denmark rallied from two goals down to rout newcomer Hungary 8-2 for a second victory at the worlds. Mikkel Aagaard scored a hat trick. The win lifted Denmark to fifth in Group B. Hungary is seventh. The top four teams in each group advance to the playoffs. Marc Michaelis and Yasin Ehliz had a goal and an assist each and Wojciech Stachowiak, Joshua Samanski and Frederik Tiffels also scored a goal apiece in Herning. Advertisement Andreas Martinsen and Jacob Berglund scored for Norway, which remained without a point. In Stockholm, Latvia beat Slovenia 5-2 for its second win in Group A.
