Sabah reps charged with bribery for mining licences say will prove innocence in court, focus remains on serving voters
KOTA KINABALU, June 30 — Faced with corruption charges in connection with mining licences, elected Sabah representatives Datuk Dr Yusof Yacob and Datuk Andi Muhammad Suryady Bandy today, affirmed their focus to serve their constituents even as they commit to prove their innocence in court. Dr Yusof, who is Sindumin assemblyman, described the charges as a public humiliation due to the media coverage, but is confident that he can clear his name through the judicial process. 'We have been humiliated a lot in the media and through this process we will clear our name through the court. We are confident in the justice system and the court process in this country. 'A person is innocent until proven guilty so we do not want this to bother us and we focus on our duties as representatives of the people to serve the area and also other duties,' he told reporters outside the Kota Kinabalu courthouse today after posting bail. Andi, who is Tanjung Batu assemblyman and assistant minister of industrial development and entrepreneurship, similarly said he is innocent of the charges and will fight them in the trial. 'I want to say again, I am not guilty and will follow all procedures in this court that uphold the rule of law in our country and I am confident that the legal process will run transparently,' he said. Both men earlier claimed trial to charges of receiving bribes totalling RM350,000 from businessman Datuk Albert Tei in exchange for helping secure approval for a mineral prospecting licence. Dr Yusof was charged with receiving RM200,000 in cash in March 2023, while Andi was accused of receiving RM150,000 in May 2023.

Sabah assistant minister, Sindumin rep and businessman charged with RM350,000 bribes for mining licences in state
KOTA KINABALU, June 30 — Two assemblyman pleaded not guilty in court today for receiving bribes from businessman Datuk Albert Tei amounting to RM350,000 in total for assistance in getting approval for a mineral prospecting licence in Sabah. Sindumin assemblyman Datuk Yusof Yacob was accused of receiving RM200,000 in cash from Tei on March 6, 2023 at the rooftop restaurant in Hilton hotel at around 2pm in exchange for help in the application and approval process for a mineral prospecting licence for Syarikat Nusa Kini Sdn Bhd in Sabah. Tanjung Batu assemblyman and Industrial Development and Entrepreneurship Assistant Minister Datuk Andi Muhammad Suryady Bandy was charged with receiving RM150,000 cash from Tei on May 12, 2023 at 11pm in front of his residence along Jalan Pantai, Sembulan, similarly in exchange for help to apply and approve the mineral prospecting licence for another company, Syarikat Sinaran Hayat Sdn Bhd, in Sabah. Both are Sabah-based companies where Tei is a partner. Tei, 37, was also charged and pleaded not guilty to offering the bribes. Special Corruption Court Judge Jason Juga set August 5 for pretrial case management of all three men. Bail for the two assemblymen was set at RM50,000 with RM10,000 fully deposited today with a local surety; hey were also asked to surrender his passport. Bail for Tei was set at RM60,000 for both charges with RM15,000 to be deposited today and surrender his passport. They were all also asked to check in with the nearest Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) office once every two months until the case is over. The charges against Andi and Yusof were under Section 16(a)(A) of the MACC Act 2009 for accepting bribes while Tei was charged under Section 16(b)(A) of the Act for offering bribes. They carry sentences of imprisonment up to twenty years and fines not less than five times the amount or value of the bribe. Previous media reports alleged that Tei to be the businessman behind several videos implicating politicians in corrupt activities between 2023 and 2024. The videos were published by online portal Malaysiakini before being handed to MACC for investigation. Some 100 supporters of both assemblymen also came to court but were not allowed into the courtroom due to the lack of space. Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah secretary Datuk Mohamed Razali Razi attended the proceedings. Yusof and Andi were represented by lawyers Datuk Ram Singh, Shahlan Jufri and Ridzwandean Bukhari M Borhan. Tei was represented by Edward Paul. The deputy public prosecutor was Nurul Izzati Sapiflee and Rustam Sanip.

Sabah assemblyman defers to state on next move after graft charge
KOTA KINABALU: Tanjung Batu assemblyman Datuk Andi Muhammad Suryady Bandy, who was charged with corruption this morning, says he will leave it to the Sabah government to decide his future in office. Andi, who is also the Kalabakan member of Parliament, was responding to questions from the media on whether he would take a leave of absence. He was charged earlier with accepting a RM150,000 bribe and pleaded not guilty. When asked if he would wait for instructions on his position, he replied briefly: "Yes."

KOTA KINABALU, June 30 (Bernama) -- Two Sabah assemblymen and a businessman pleaded not guilty in the Sessions Court here today to corruption charges involving mineral mining licensing in the state in 2023. The accused - Sindumin assemblyman Datuk Dr Yusof @ Josree Yacob, Tanjung Batu assemblyman Datuk Andi Muhammad Suryady Bandy, and businessman Datuk Tei Jiann Cheing - made their pleas after separate charges were read before Judge Jason Juga. Yusof, 69, who is the chairman of Qhazanah Sabah Berhad, was charged with one count of receiving a RM200,000 bribe from Tei as an inducement to facilitate a prospecting licence application for mineral exploration in Sabah. The alleged offence took place at a hotel here at 2 pm on March 6, 2023.
