Andie Chen urged by fellow actors not to feel discouraged after Best Actor loss
Find out what's new on ST website and app. Actress Hong Huifang urged actor Andie Chen to keep persevering and not be discouraged by his loss at the Star Awards. SINGAPORE – Local actor Andie Chen may have missed out again on the Best Actor accolade at the Star Awards on July 6, but veteran actors Hong Huifang and Chen Hanwei believe what he lacked was a bit of luck. Andie Chen, 40, was nominated for his role as a strict father in family drama Born To Shine (2024). He lost to Christopher Lee, 53, who played a father whose daughter was killed in crime mystery drama Kill Sera Sera (2024). The Best Actor nomination was Chen's fourth at the Star Awards. He has been nominated six times for Best Supporting Actor. On July 12, Hong, 64, shared on social media photos of her meet-up with Chen and other artistes, such as his wife Kate Pang; Felicia Chin and her husband Jeffrey Xu; and Aileen Tan. 'You were the winner of Star Search 2007, and along the way, we have seen you working hard consistently,' Hong wrote, addressing Chen. 'Although you have missed out on the awards many times, it is not because you are not good enough, but sometimes you just lack a little bit of luck.' Hong, who was nominated for Best Leading Actress for the film Ajoomma at Taiwan's Golden Horse Awards in 2022, urged him to keep persevering and not be discouraged. Top stories Swipe. Select. Andie Chen lost out at the Star Awards again: 'If you really love what you are doing, you just keep going'
The Star Awards drought continues for Mediacorp actor Andie Chen, who went home empty-handed once again. The 40-year-old was up for three trophies: Best Actor for his role as a strict dad in Born to Shine, Top 10 Most Popular Male Artiste and BYD Favourite Male Character. The Best Actor trophy eventually went to Special Achievement Award honoree Christopher Lee, who also bagged the Best Programme Host award for Dishing With Chris Lee Season 2. In a moment we caught on camera, Lee approached Chen to 'apologise' to him. Chen jokingly replied: 'You still have the cheek to come up to me?' 'You will surely get it next time, okay?' Lee reassured Chen after giving him a tight hug. When met the Star Search 2007 champ, even this writer felt compelled to spend a few minutes consoling him. After all, how can you not feel for the dude who has been waiting 16 years since his first nomination for Best Newcomer at Star Awards 2009? We also chose our words carefully, especially when he remarked that some people had come up to him and said he 'just has to work harder'. 'But it has been a long time, and I am already doing my best,' Chen laughed. Despite the obvious disappointment, Chen assured us he is not devastated. 'I think that feeling [of devastation] peaked a few years ago, and now, I am in an okay place. Right now, I guess I will have to wait till the heavens decide that I deserve it before giving it to me,' he said. Chen even jokingly said that his family seemed to have got used to him not winning at this point. His wife, former Mediacorp actress Kate Pang, dropped him a text saying, 'You are the best!', while his parents, who attended the awards, told him that they would 'wait by the road to go home together'. 'I do feel sian [tired] for them [his parents]. They have been coming almost every year. I know deep down, they can't wait to celebrate when I win something,' he said. There is, however, at least one person who is openly sharing her disappointment – Avery, his nine-year-old daughter. 'My kids are staying with my brother, and he texted me that she is quite sad that I didn't win,' he said. However, Chen told us that he sees it as a teaching moment. 'They have never seen me stop, and I am not about to stop now. If you really love what you are doing, you just keep going,' he said. The couple also have a son, Aden, who is 10. It's not all doom and gloom, though. Chen said he found joy in seeing his colleagues go up to collect their Top 10 Most Popular Awards. The popularity stakes, he reasoned, is a game he doesn't think he's 'suitable for or capable of winning'. 'There are many aspects of the 'popularity' contest that don't sit well with me,' he said, declining to go into further detail. However, he reiterated that he's always set his sights on acting. 'An acting award is something that I have been working towards my entire career, and it would be nice to be recognised," said Chen.

Andie Chen says, 'It should be my turn already' after not winning any Star Awards in his 27-year acting career
SINGAPORE: The Star Awards 2025 are just around the corner on Jul 6! Everyone's wondering who's going to take home a trophy and who's going to leave empty-handed. It's been mentioned on CNA that Andie Chen, who used to work with Mediacorp and has been in the business for almost thirty years, hasn't actually won any awards at the show yet. Photo: Instagram/Andie Chen So, when they told the 39-year-old actor about his nominations for Best Actor, Top 10 Most Popular Male Artistes, and even BYD Favourite Male Character this year, he said he's already braced himself for the possibility of not winning again. He was saying to Chinese media outlet 8world that since he's been up for Best Actor so many times now, even though he's always really happy to be nominated, there's still this little bit of nerves that always pops up. No award In 2017, Chen was actually in the running for not one, not two, but three awards: Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, and one of the Top 10 Most Popular Male Artistes, and still, he didn't win anything that night. As if going through that wasn't tough enough, the same thing happened again last year! It even got to the point where Chen joked that he's pretty sure he's developed 'Star Awards Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Chen's portrayal of a strict father in Born to Shine has earned him a nomination this year for Best Actor. Richie Koh ( Coded Love ), Qi Yuwu ( Once Upon a New Year's Eve ), Gavin Teo ( To Be Loved ), and Christopher Lee ( Kill Sera Sera ) constitute this year's competition for the Best Actor Award for Chen. The actor was asked how he felt about his chances of taking home a trophy this time around. 'It's about time!' He even joked about it, saying, 'Those who won before, still fight what fight, the newcomers still come and snatch from me. I already have it so hard! Shouldn't they let the 'old man' win? It should be my turn already!' Chen has been acting since he was literally a kid, around 11 years old. He even won Star Search way back in 2007, so he jokingly pointed out that he's already been in the industry for a solid 27 years. Nevertheless, Chen said that he doesn't have high expectations for victory and doesn't dare to give it much thought. 'I'm still very grateful, because the character I played this time isn't that likable, so to be seen by the judges is quite a happy thing for me,' he admitted. Also, just so you know, Chen's main competition includes Lee, Qi, and Koh – all of whom have already won the Best Actor award at the Star Awards before. Let younger guys have a go He even quipped, 'I think big brother Chris' hands are tired from receiving so many awards, he doesn't need to fight with the younger generation anymore!' When asked if he might finally take home a trophy this time, Chen laughed and said, 'I'll leave this question to the audience and judges. Is it time for me to break the curse?' However, there's a bit of a funny situation: Chen isn't even sure if he'll be able to attend the Star Awards ceremony because he might be busy filming in Taiwan at the time. Actor Andie Chen has not won anything at Star Awards in 27-year career: 'It should be my turn already'
Now that Star Awards 2025 is around the corner, are celebs starting to get anxious about going home empty-handed on Jul 6? Among them is ex-Mediacorp actor Andie Chen, who has not received a single award at the annual ceremony despite being in the industry for close to three decades. In fact, when informed about his nominations for Best Actor, Top 10 Most Popular Male Artistes as well as BYD Favourite Male Character this year, the 39-year-old admitted that he's already mentally prepared to be disappointed again. "Because I've been in the running for so many times. I'm happy every time I'm nominated, but I will be a little afraid too," the four-time Best Actor nominee told Chinese media 8world. Back in 2017, Chen was in the running for Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor and Top 10 Most Popular Male Artistes, but still went home without a trophy. As if that experience wasn't painful enough, history repeated itself last year, causing Chen to joke that he's already gotten "Star Awards Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)". This year, Chen is nominated for Best Actor for his performance as a stern dad in Born To Shine. He's up against Christopher Lee (Kill Sera Sera), Gavin Teo (To Be Loved), Qi Yuwu (Once Upon A New Year's Eve) and Richie Koh (Coded Love). So what does Chen think are his odds of bringing home the title this time? 'Those who won before still fight what fight, the newcomers still come and snatch from me," he joked. "I already have it so hard! Shouldn't they let the 'old man' win? It should be my turn already!" The Star Search 2007 champion, who's been acting since he was 11, even took this opportunity to quip: "Just a reminder to everyone, I've been in the industry for 27 years okay!". That said, Chen admitted that he doesn't harbour much hopes of winning, and doesn't dare to think too much about it either. "I'm still very grateful, because the character I played this time isn't that likeable. So to be seen by the judges is quite a happy thing for me," he said. To Chen, his biggest competitors are Lee, Qi and Koh, who have all won Best Actor at Star Awards before. "I think big brother Chris' hands are tired from receiving so many awards, he doesn't need to fight with the younger generation anymore!" he added. As for whether or not he can finally bring at least one trophy home, Chen then laughed: "I'll leave this question to the audience and judges. Is it time for me to break the curse?" But here's the plot twist: Chen is still unable to confirm if he can make it for the event as he may be filming in Taiwan then. Wouldn't it be ironic if Chen finally wins something but ends up being a no-show at the ceremony?
