Airlines warned about rising threat of 'nightmare scenario'

Airlines are being warned about a rising threat in the skies. Hampshire-based companies Barnbrook Systems and Flair are in talks with major international carriers about E:BAG, a new product designed to contain and suppress fires caused by lithium-ion batteries in passenger devices such as phones, vapes and power banks. Andrew Barnett, managing director of Barnbrook Systems, said: "A fire at 35,000 feet which won't go out is a nightmare scenario. "There has been an increasing number of incidents involving lithium-ion batteries whether in the home, in public, business settings or on transport. An E:BAG being used to contain and supress a mobile phone fire started by its lithium-ion battery (Image: Deep South Media) "As the summer getaway gets in full swing, there will be fuller flights with greater potential for fires from devices with lithium-ion batteries. "We have been in talks with major international carriers about the issue and how E:BAG can support their risk management and safety protocols. "It allows cabin crew to act quickly, easily and safely to deal with suspect and burning devices while providing peace of mind for passengers and crew alike." Barnbrook Systems managing director Andrew Barnett (Image: Deep South Media) The E:BAG is a fire-resistant satchel made from smart material and nano-technology. It requires no water or fire extinguishers and contains a heat-sensitive powder that activates when a burning device is placed inside, suppressing and extinguishing the fire. The bags come in 15L, 30L and 45L sizes to accommodate different devices and can be equipped with Barnbrook's BlueCube remote sensing technology. The need for such technology is growing as lithium-ion battery fires become more common. In early June, a China Southern Airlines flight was forced to return to the airport after take-off when a power bank exploded. In January, a similar device caused a fire that destroyed an Air Busan passenger plane in South Korea. More information about E:BAG is available at The UK Civil Aviation Authority reported that 276 million passengers passed through UK airports in 2023, a 23 per cent increase on 2022. National Air Traffic Services (NATS) recorded 210,085 flights in April 2025, up 4.2 per cent from the previous year. Barnbrook Systems is based in Fareham, while Flair operates out of the same location and has its headquarters in Reading.

Summerhall Arts to host Gravity Beer Festival this autumn

Gravity Beer Festival will take place at Summerhall Arts in September with a renewed commitment to creativity, independent brewing and the artistry of beer-making. Held in the grounds of Summerhall since its launch in 2023, Gravity 2025 will spotlight the cutting-edge of craft in beer-making from across the UK and beyond. Welcoming 14 of the UK's best craft breweries and cider maker; festivalgoers will be able to explore and enjoy a curated line-up of exceptional beers, experimental brews, and exclusive festival-only pours. The connection between Gravity Beer Festival and Summerhall goes beyond the festival dates. The newly appointed Summerhall Arts was set up to support the arts and authentic craft, and Gravity Beer Festival is an integral part of that. Barney's Beer, the team behind Gravity, have their year-round home at the historic Summerhall Brewery which was first established on the site in 1705. It is this setting and cultural influence that is the inspiration behind Gravity Beer Festival. Andrew Barnett, aka Barney, Founder, Gravity Beer Festival said: 'Gravity has always been about more than just beer. It's about craft in every sense of the word. By partnering with Summerhall, Gravity is creating an event that feels as much like a cultural happening as it does a celebration of craft beer. The partnership reflects our shared belief in supporting independent makers and providing a platform for boundary breaking ideas. We're thrilled to strengthen that collaboration with Summerhall Arts this year, a space that shares our ethos of innovation, creativity, and independent spirit.' Sam Gough, Chief Executive of Summerhall Arts added: 'At Summerhall Arts, we're passionate about championing artisanal craft and authentic makers, so we're thrilled to welcome Gravity Beer Festival back this year. Founded by our long-time collaborators and neighbours at Barney's Beer, the festival reflects a shared spirit of creativity and community. It's set to be a vibrant celebration right here on our doorstep.' Gravity Beer Festival will take place on Friday 26th and Saturday 27th September 2025. Tickets cost £39.50 and cover beer and events during your selected session – no tokens, just drinks. To book your tickets and to view the full line-up of breweries for 2025, visit . Get Caffeinated at Dolores Park's Upcoming Fancy Coffee Bar

Andrew Barnett is a coffee roaster amongst coffee roasters. He's friends with icons, including George Howell, the man who sold the frappe, through his Coffee Connection, to Starbucks. Barnett's Linea Caffe opened in the Mission District in 2013, its blue and red facade part of the furniture between Valencia and Mission streets. Now he's taking Linea to new heights with his splashiest cafe yet. Just a stone's throw from Dolores Park, a new Linea cafe will open next door to Bi-Rite Creamery on 18th Street. This cafe takes over the former Nopalito window space at 3690 18th Street. Here, Linea will offer blended coffee drinks, delicate pour-over service, and a 'bean bar,' a throwback to the coffee bean scooping operations of original San Francisco businesses, including Polk Street's Freed, Teller & Freed. The hope is to open by late summer or early fall 2025. The 800-square-foot space is two-and-a-half times the size of the first Linea shop. Guests will be able to sit inside, unlike the first spot and the Potrero Hill warehouse, which has a parklet but no other seating. Designer Alan Sklansky, a local talent who worked on the Zuni Cafe redesign, will handle the buildout. There'll be Dynamo Donuts and Neighbor Bakehouse goods at this outpost, as there are at the first two Lineas. New offerings — including the company's newest espresso blend, A4 — will be available by pour-over and espresso only. 'I love pour-over coffee,' Barnett says. 'But I love espresso. I dream of espresso.' Linea's been busy elsewhere in the city, too. In late May, the company launched an espresso cart out of the Potrero Hill roasting facility. A handsome light wood cart takes over the big loading dock leading into the Mariposa Street warehouse. Pastries and bags of coffee line the cart. The cart will show up each Saturday and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Barnett says it has been a chance for his staff to try their hand at a more experiential, pop-up operation. Still, Barnett insists coffee roasting is Linea's number one priority. His business is a Benefit Corporation, or B Corp, which means the intent of the business and profits go toward social impact-focused causes. Barnett says this moment in the United States — riddled with anti-immigration sentiment and bizarre supply chain issues created by the new administration — is an incredibly difficult one for specialty coffee. Working with farmers and producers who grow organic, biodynamic coffees is his focus. 'We're a showcase for that,' Barnett says. 'Linea in Italian is line. We're a line connecting the coffee to the finished product.' Linea Caffe (3690 18th Street) will open in late summer or early fall 2025. See More: San Francisco Restaurant Openings
