Andrew Painter, Eduardo Tait are the Phillies' representatives for the Futures Game

The Futures Game is a chance for MLB to showcase the game's best prospects in a game setting. It's like the All-Star Game for prospects and it's wonderful. Sometimes, the offense can be missing because the pitchers throwing have such high octane, it can overpower hitters. Nevertheless, the Phillies are sending two representatives to the game. Andrew Painter is the big name here. He's the team's top prospect and arguably the best pitching prospect in the game. The anticipation for his arrival is still somewhat tepid thanks to the stretch of domination the rotation is currently on, but when he does arrive, it will be an exciting day. We already know Painter is going to miss the game because the team wants to keep him on schedule. A shame as he likely would have started the game, but the bigger picture is more important to a team that has World Series aspirations. Advertisement Eduardo Tait is the team's #4 prospect according to MLB Pipeline and is showing why. Through 65 games, Tait has a .256/.328/.449 line with ten home runs and 42 RBI. He's shown improvement behind the plate with his throwing and receiving and looks like the heir apparent to J.T. Realmuto in the big leagues. That could be a few years off still as he's only 18 (!) years old, but he's performing well in Clearwater and there really isn't much in his path to block him. It'll be exciting to see him pitted against the best prospects in the game in Atlanta. More from

Phillies' Andrew Painter Won't Pitch Out of Bullpen Once Called Up

Phillies' Andrew Painter Won't Pitch Out of Bullpen Once Called Up originally appeared on Athlon Sports. After a promising start to his MLB career, Mick Abel struggled too much and was sent back down to the minor leagues to rediscover his command. Amid such a roster move, the plan for another pitcher prospect became a little clearer. Advertisement Scott Lauber of The Philadelphia Inquirer shared Dave Dombrowski's thoughts on the Phillies' top prospect, Andrew Painter, amid his stint in the minor leagues. "He's been good but not great," Dombrowski said. "That's the way I would describe it. His velocity's good; his pitches are good. Probably doesn't have quite the same command as he normally has, which sometimes happens. It takes a little while to get back when you're coming off a couple of years down. But he's touching 100." Painter hasn't been his best in Triple-A this season. He has a 4.45 ERA in 56.2 innings pitched, with 64 strikeouts and a 1.34 WHIP. While he's not been his best, Dombrowski pointed out one area that matters a lot to him with Painter. "And he's healthy," Dombrowksi said, "Which is the most important thing." Coming off Tommy John surgery, which cost him the entire 2024 season, his health is a major concern for the Phillies. Painter, being healthy heading into the All-Star break, is a great sign for the top prospect. Advertisement Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Mick Abel (40) in the dugout after being relieved during the second inning against the San Diego Padres at Citizens Bank Streicher-Imagn Images But the big question is, when will he be called up? Dombrowski alluded to his plan with Painter, and it includes zero intention to use him out of the bullpen with the team's stacked rotation. "We have not discussed it," Dombrowski said, "And I don't think we would bring him up as a bullpen guy coming off an injury." If Dombrowski and the Phillies don't plan to use him in the bullpen, Painter is going to have a tough time cracking the MLB roster. With the current rotation being the best in baseball, it'd take an injury or major struggles from a starter for Painter to get a spot in the rotation. Abel was sent back down to Triple-A, and with Aaron Nola still out, Painter does have a spot on the roster. But, as the plan is to shut him down for the All-Star break, Painter will have to wait until the second half of July to make his debut at the earliest. Advertisement This updated plan with Painter helps clear the air on when the top prospect might make his MLB debut. His earlier debut date is after the All-Star break, which was the plan a while ago. But, with Abel back down in Triple-A and Nola banged up, Painter's chances of getting the call to the big leagues are better than they have ever been. Phillies Trade Idea Sends Andrew Painter, Justin Crawford for Twins' Byron Buxton

Phillies Trade Idea Sends Andrew Painter, Justin Crawford for Twins' Byron Buxton originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Philadelphia Phillies have had issues in the outfield for a few years. Brandon Marsh has been inconsistent, Johan Rojas isn't a great hitter, and Max Kepler has been a letdown this season. Advertisement With the MLB trade deadline on the horizon, the Phillies could look to make a huge addition in the outfield if the trade idea from ESPN's David Schoenfield were to come true. He proposes that the Phillies send a haul of Andrew Painter and Justin Crawford to the Minnesota Twins for Byron Buxton. Investing in one player is a lot, but Schoenfield explains why such a deal would work. "Philadelphia has a lot riding on 2025 given the age of its lineup," Schoenfield writes, "And executive Dave Dombrowski knows how to go all-in. In this case, it would mean parting with one of the top pitching prospects in the game in Painter, plus a promising young outfield hitting well in Triple-A." While "Trading Painter would be painful," as Schoenfield writes, the Phillies have the pitchers to be okay without him. Zack Wheeler is signed through 2027, while Aaron Nola and Christopher Sanchez are signed through 2030. Advertisement Minnesota Twins center fielder Byron Buxton (25) runs the bases on his solo home run in the first inning at Target Kluckhohn-Imagn Images Jesus Luzardo and Ranger Saurez help this year, at the least, and Mick Abel is a potential option down the road as well. Plus, there's always the free agent market or trade block to add a starter when necessary. Buxton, one of the best outfielders this season, would be a perfect addition to bolster the offense and defense for the Phillies. He would be a massive upgrade in the outfield, and he's the righty bat the team is looking for. So far this season, Buxton has 20 home runs and a .270 batting average in 73 games. His .879 OPS would be the highest among Phillies outfields by a wide margin, and he'd be a much-needed power presence in the lineup. Advertisement Kyle Schwarber is the only Phillies player with at least 20 home runs, at 27. Trea Turner and Nick Castellanos are tied for second with just 11 home runs. Adding Buxton's 20 home runs would be a huge help. While Schoenfield has the Phillies giving up a lot, it'd be worth it. Buxton, under team control through 2028, would be the exact addition the team needs to make for a World Series push over the next few seasons. Buxton, being an outfielder, hitting from the right side of the plate, and having incredible power numbers, 'd be a perfect addition for the Phillies. Rob Thomson Gives Worrying Update on Phillies' Andrew Painter Plan

Rob Thomson Gives Worrying Update on Phillies' Andrew Painter Plan originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Philadelphia Phillies have arguably the best pitching prospect in the world with Andrew Painter. Unfortunately, Painter has dealt with some injuries, and he's still recovering from elbow surgery. Advertisement The Phillies decided that he won't pitch in the All-Star Futures game, but the hope is for him to eventually make his big league debut. "We will keep him on our plan," manager Rob Thomson said Monday, per ESPN. "There's nothing that says he's coming up here at all. He's got to be healthy. He's got to be pitching well. We've said that all along." Despite the plan for him to throw sometime after the All-Star break, when asked about the situation on Wednesday, Thomson didn't exactly sound like it's certain that he'll be called up in the near future. Philadelphia Phillies manager Rob Thomson (59) makes a pitching change against the Atlanta Braves in the sixth inning at Truist Davis-Imagn Images He was asked if the Phillies still believe he won't be with them prior to the All-Star break. Advertisement "Yes," Thomson said, per On Pattison. When asked if there's any flexibility on that, Thomson was unsure. "I don't think so," Thomson said. It's somewhat concerning that the Phillies are being stubborn about the situation. However, they're doing it in the best interest of Painter in their mind. The last thing they want is for the hard-throwing right-hander to get injured, and he only has 161.1 innings pitched under his belt in the minors. Yes, he had an injury that kept him out for two years, but 161.1 Innings isn't exactly ideal. In Triple-A this year, he hasn't been as dominant as some were hoping for, posting a 4.24 ERA and only 45 strikeouts in 40.1 innings. It's July And Andrew Painter Is Still Not Pitching For The Phillies

It's July, so where the heck is Phillies mega-prospect Andrew Painter? Yeah. Still in the minors. Way back in the winter, Phillies president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski said the team was targeting 'July-ish' for Painter's MLB debut, pending no setbacks to the 22-year-old's return from elbow surgery that wiped out his 2023 and 2024 seasons. There have been no reported setbacks, yet Painter is still in the bush leagues with no imminent sign of his call-up. The Phillies have been reluctant setting a precise timeline for when the kid could reach the majors this season. It's been an excruciating wait for Phillies fans to get the prized prospect to Philly – or as one Phillies writer calls the terminal wait for Painter: "unbearable for the fan base.' All rights reserved Phillies manager Rob Thomson said Monday that Painter will use the All-Star break (July 14-17) as a mini-hiatus to recharge. Painter was named to the All-Star Futures Game's roster for the July 12 game at Atlanta's Truist Park but he will not pitch. 'We will keep him on our plan,' Thomson said Monday. "There's nothing that says he's coming up here at all. He's got to be healthy. He's got to be pitching well. We've said that all along." Paul Casella said 'it's possible' Painter's debut could happen during the team's six-game homestand starting on July 18. But there isn't a clear need with the big club's rotation, even with Aaron Nola sidelined with a rib issue for at least another month. Perhaps a more realistic target date for Painter's MLB arrival would be August when the Phils play 19 games in 20 days. The team could go to a six-man rotation to give the starters extra rest during the season's dog days. Painter, ranked the Phillies' No. 1 overall prospect by MLBPipeline, has a 4.18 ERA in 2025, across four starts for low-A Clearwater and nine starts for triple-A Lehigh Valley. He has 57 strikeouts in 51⅔ innings. His next start is scheduled for Wednesday, when he's expected to throw six innings and/or 90-95 pitches. Here's why Phillies fans can't wait to see Painter in Philly: Painter injured his elbow during spring training in 2023 and had Tommy John surgery later that year. He roared through Philly's system in 2022, going 6-2 with a 1.48 ERA in 26 appearances spread across two Single-A teams and Double-A Reading. Painter was the No. 13 pick in the 2021 amateur draft and signed for a $3.9 million bonus. Among 1,170 players who have appeared in Futures Games, 86.5% have played in at least one big league game, and 250 players (21.4%) have been selected for a major league All-Star Game.
