(AP Photo/Marta Lavandier) MIAMI (AP) — Brandon Woodruff pitched six strong innings in his first start in 651 days, Jackson Chourio homered and drove in three runs, and the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Miami Marlins 3-1 on Sunday. Woodruff (1-0) allowed a third-inning single and a homer in the fifth — both to rookie Heriberto Hernandez. He struck out eight and didn't walk a batter, throwing 53 of 70 pitches for strikes. Woodruff has a 47-26 record over eight seasons with the Brewers. Advertisement Christian Yelich had an infield hit in the third and stole his 13th base before Chourio hit his 15th homer on a 1-1 pitch from Edward Cabrera for a 2-0 lead. Yelich has reached base in 19 straight games. Hernandez hit his third homer to cut it to 2-1. Chourio had a sacrifice fly in the eighth. Trevor Megill worked the ninth for his 20th save in 23 opportunities. Cabrera (3-3) yielded two runs in seven innings. He allowed two hits in seven innings in a 2-0 win over the Twins his last time out. Miami lost for the third time in 13 games. Milwaukee went 3-3 on a six-game trip. Key moment Jim Leyland, who managed the Marlins to their first World Series victory in 1997, was inducted into the team's Wall of Fame. Advertisement Key stat Woodruff, 32, hadn't made a start in the majors since Sept. 23, 2023 at Miami, when the Brewers beat the Marlins to clinch a postseason berth. He had right shoulder surgery that October and then had his return delayed this season by ankle and elbow injuries. Up next The Marlins begin a four-game series at Cincinnati. They have not announced a starter for Monday against Reds RHP Brady Singer (7-6, 4.36 ERA). The Brewers will start RHP Freddy Peralta (9-4, 2.91) on Monday in the first of three against the visiting Los Angeles Dodgers. ___ AP MLB:

Brandon Woodruff, once again, is on the cusp of his MLB return

From the conversations going on inside American Family Field on June 23, it sure sounds like Brandon Woodruff is one more outing — and maybe a knock on some wood — away from making his long-awaited return to a major-league mound. The Milwaukee Brewers right-hander completed a simulated game in the sweltering heat June 23, throwing roughly 60 pitches across four simulated innings against Brewers hitters Jake Bauers, Andruw Monasterio, Daz Cameron and Eric Haase. Hours later, Woodruff spoke as optimistically about a return following a torn labrum in September 2023. Advertisement 'Everything felt great. The stuff was doing what I wanted it to do finally,' he said. 'The body is starting to move like I wanted to.' Brewers pitcher Brandon Woodruff will go out on a rehab assignment either late this week or early next. After that, he believes it will be time to return a major-league mound. Those words from Woodruff aren't nothing. In his most recent rehab stint, which ended with a line drive to the elbow in what was supposed to be his final outing before being activated from the injured list, Woodruff's fastball was sitting in the 89-90 mph, topping out around 93 mph. Woodruff has indicated his body is moving better down the mound now, which is something of a silver lining from his latest shutdown because the time away from pitching in games allowed him to 'clean a lot of stuff up in the weight room and the mechanics.' Advertisement 'My body's starting to move without having to think about it, if that makes sense,' Woodruff said. 'I've been trying to do stuff and you feel certain stuff. I'm using these 2 weeks here and I've cleaned a lot of stuff up.' Woodruff will go out on a rehab assignment, his third of the season, either late this week or early next. After that, he believes it will be time. 'I've always been a guy that, when I'm ready, I'm ready,' Woodruff said. '...I'm not saying that's going to lead to results but I know that I'm ready to go pitch and compete. I think I'm at that point now.' The goal is no more bouts with getting hit by a line drive or suffering an ankle injury, which he did in his first rehab outing in what was expected to be his last start before returning. Advertisement 'I don't care what happens as long as I get the pitches in,' Woodruff said. A loose timeframe for Woodruff's return to the Brewers could line up for the club's series in Miami from July 4-6 at loanDepot Park, the site of his last outing when he got hurt, or the following week against the Los Angeles Dodgers at home. How, exactly, Woodruff looks when he takes the ball is a bit of a mystery still, even to Woodruff. But if you're taking the right-hander at his word, then there's reason for optimism. 'It takes time,' Woodruff said. 'You don't know when it's going to click, but each and every time you learn something from that experience, and you put it to use when you're down. It's been a puzzle but it's finally starting to come together.' Advertisement Nestor Cortes has a target return date in mind Left-hander Nestor Cortes also pitched in the simulated game, going one inning and roughly 25 pitches. "Today it was more, I feel like when you're ramping up into these things, you're looking for one or the other – command or velo," Cortes said. "And today, I felt like I tried to do both at the same time just because I was hyped up for this. I hadn't been on the mound in two months. I think I was trying to do both and I got tired after about 15 pitches." The recovery process for Cortes has generally been positive as he ramps up in his return from a left flexor strain. It's the same injury he dealt with last year but was hoping to be able to pitch through before it flared up late in spring training and again in his first two regular-season starts. He recently completed an endurance throwing program, which was the toughest step to this point in terms of throwing pain-free. Advertisement "Kind of like building a callous and getting the arm up to where if I did throw 100 pitches I'm ok to bounce back the next day, and right now it feels like I can do so," Cortes said. "The last two bullpens have been really good to where it was like I kid around that I've got an inning today in me. Today I knew I didn't have that in me. The buildup is real. "Obviously going two the next time will be a big step for me. After that, probably rehab games.' If Cortes can get through a two-inning simulated game, scheduled tentatively for June 27, he plans to go to Nashville and begin a rehab assignment. The first outing for that is penciled in for July 2, then Cortes would like to be back by the first week following the all-star break. "I'm finally eager to come back and pitch," Cortes said. "It's an exciting team. We've won a lot of games recently, so just want to be there to help in any way I can.' Mets 3, Brewers 2: Milwaukee comes up short in key moments for first series loss in a month

NEW YORK — A series that began so promising in The Big Apple ended with a sour taste. After Joey Ortiz's go-ahead grand slam sent the Milwaukee Brewers to a 7-2 win in the series opener, they had high hopes for the remaining two games against the reeling New York Mets. Advertisement Instead, the Brewers boarded a late-night flight to Miami with nothing but frustration and their first series loss in nearly a month. BOX SCORE: Mets 3, Brewers 2 Balls didn't bounce the Brewers' way in key situations, including on Juan Soto's go-ahead single late, and Brewers offense wasn't able to take fortune into its own hands in a 3-2 loss to the Mets in the series finale at Citi Field on July 3. "Always disappointed when we lose," Brewers manager Pat Murphy said. "Especially when it comes down to inches here or there, or it comes down to pitches or it comes down to a close call. Sometimes you just got to win by more than that." Advertisement The last time Milwaukee dropped a series? You have to go back to June 9-11 at home against the Atlanta Braves. Andruw Monasterio delivers in rare starting opportunity but offense does little else Starting for the first time in nearly a month even – his last time in the lineup came June 4, Andruw Monasterio did his part with the bat. With Mets starter David Peterson rolling and two outs in the seventh, Monasterio roped a solo home run down the line in left for his first long ball of the year to bring the Brewers back within 3-2. Monasterio had only not been out of the lineup every day since June 4, he had hardly even stepped into the batter's box, taking all of two plate appearances over the team's previous 22 games. Advertisement "Last year helped me a lot for this year," Monasterio said. "The veteran guys help me, the coaches help me with giving me advice. I'm trying to take that advice and follow it. I'm playing every game like it's the last." It didn't end up mattering, though. Mets setup man Ryne Stanek struck out the side in the eighth and Edwin Díaz locked down his second save in as many nights, with some assistance from a super throw by catcher Luis Torrens to catch Christian Yelich stealing for the second out. Yelich was called safe on the field, but replay seemed to show the glove of shortstop Francisco Lindor brush Yelich's jersey right as he caught the ball and before Yelich's fingertips touched second base. Díaz then struck out Brice Turang swinging to an eruption from the sellout crowd of 42,241. The Mets improved to 9-0 in games started by Peterson at home this season, and the southpaw dropped his Citi Field earned run average to 2.11 in 2025. Advertisement Milwaukee dropped to 1-35 when trailing after eight innings and still has only three wins after trailing by multiple runs this season —all of which came in a span of eight total games between May 25 and June 2. "I like our team, guys," Murphy said. "We battle. You're facing one of the best lefties in the game this year. We didn't get the ball to go our way." Third time through troubles for Quintana give the Mets the lead José Quintana's initial reaction was elation. Then he turned around. What the Brewers left-hander thought was an inning-ending double play off Soto's bat to keep the game tied through sixth turned into a 101.3 mph single that turned the tides in the host's favor for good. Advertisement "It's a really weird sensation," Quintana said. "Because as soon as you get the ground ball you're ready and excited to jump and celebrate the play, because that's what you're looking for, a ball on the ground. It's tough when you see the ball pass through. But it is what it is." One batter later, after Murphy had pulled Quintana from the game, Pete Alonso roped a double off the wall in left-center to give the Mets a 3-1 lead and drive in what would ultimately be the winning run. It was an agonizing inning for Quintana and the Brewers, who was burned by some soft contact even though he otherwise allowed eight of the 12 firmest-struck balls of the game. Starling Marte, New York's leadoff hitter, poked an infield single and moved to third when Francisco Lindor pulled out his fishing rod on a down-and-away changeup and dumped the two-strike pitch into right. Quintana then caught too much of the plate with another two-strike pitch, this time to Soto, who rocketed a single past a diving Monasterio at second base to give the Mets a 2-1 lead. Advertisement Bad luck in the inning or not, it wound up as the second straight start and third out of the last four in which the opposing offense broke through with a big rally against Quintana while seeing him for the third time in the game. After allowing three or more runs only once through his first eight starts with the Brewers, Quintana has now given up at least that many in three of his last four outings and 14 runs in total. Quintana didn't walk anyone for the first time since his April 11, but he also finished the day with only three swings and misses generated while the Mets offense tagged him for a 55.6% hard-hit rate. "I thought he was great." Murphy said. "Best outing I've seen him have since I was on the other side of the field." There was a path the Brewers could have taken in the sixth that involved removing Quintana from the game after striking out Tyrone Taylor, the Mets' No. 9 hitters, to open the frame. Advertisement Quintana entered the day with opponents boasting an .852 OPS against him the third time through the order in a game and wasn't getting whiffs. To that point, eight of the Mets' 15 balls in play were over 95 mph. And Starling Marte, Lindor and Soto were the batters looming. But removing Quintana wasn't even a consideration in the dugout. "Absolutely not," Murphy said. "You saw what happened. He got the balls that produce outs. He didn't give up any hard contact. He had a tough scenario. The ball up the middle is a ground ball. The ball Lindor hit is a bloop and the ball Soto hit is a double play ball. What else could Quintana do? "I could've left him in, to be quite honest with you. That might have been more of the question." William Contreras scored from third as Durbin beat the throw from third baseman Mark Vientos to knot the score at 1-1. A Brandon Nimmo ambush opens the Just as he did the night before, Brandon Nimmo hacked away at a first pitch and sent the ball out to right for a home run to lead off the game's scoring. This one, at least, wasn't of the grand slam variety as his second-inning blast off Jacob Misiorowski was in the July 2 contest, but rather a solo shot that left the bat at 109.1 mph. White Sox claim infielder Vinny Capra off waivers from Brewers

CHICAGO (AP) — The Chicago White Sox claimed infielder Vinny Capra off waivers from the Milwaukee Brewers on Thursday. Milwaukee had designated Capra for assignment on Friday, the same day the Brewers had recalled infielder Andruw Monasterio from Triple-A Nashville. Capra, 28, batted .074 with a .121 on-base percentage, one homer and four RBIs in 24 games with Milwaukee while primarily playing third base. He also had made appearances at second base and shortstop. He won a roster spot with Milwaukee after compiling six homers and 14 RBIs in 19 Cactus League games. He homered in the Brewers' season opener and went 1 of 3 in each of his first two games but had been struggling ever since. His single in a 5-1 victory over the Houston Astros on May 5 was his first hit since April 2 and ended an 0-for-36 slump. Before this season, Capra had 20 games of major league experience. He played eight games with Toronto in 2022, nine with Pittsburgh in 2023 and three with Milwaukee in 2024. ___ AP MLB:

José Ramirez moves up on Guardians stolen bases list with his 3rd career 3 steal game

CLEVELAND — José Ramírez has shown he can turn a game around with one swing of the bat. On Monday night, the Guardians All-Star third baseman did it with his glove and legs. Ramírez made a nice play to get Milwaukee's Andruw Monasterio out at second base with the bases loaded for the final out. In the home half, he stole two bases after getting aboard with a single and scored on Gabriel Arias' double with the bases loaded to put the Guardians up 3-0.
