Tage Thompson Reflects On Teammates Lack Of Response After Noesen Hit One of the many low points of the Buffalo Sabres 2024-25 season was the lack of response to the hit on leading scorer Tage Thompson by New Jersey forward Stefan Noesen. Thompson was laid out by Noesen early in the third period of the Sabres 4-3 win over the Devils on February 2nd. Noesen was given a match penalty and game misconduct, but none of the players on the ice at the time of the hit or in the subsequent remaining 15 minutes responded to the hit, something that Thompson reflected on with reporter Andy Strickland. 2:20 Now Playing Paused Ad Playing

Identifying 5 top landing spots for Mitch Marner in NHL free agency

The Toronto Maple Leafs will not be re-signing forward Mitch Marner this offseason, as confirmed by Andy Strickland. It officially clears the way for the 28-year-old winger to enter NHL free agency, where he will be the best player available this offseason. Marner, who has played in the All-Star Game three times, is rated as the No. 1 player in both The Athletic and ESPN's NHL free agency rankings. With the Florida Panthers expected to re-sign Sam Bennett to a lucrative eight-year contract, Marner's market will be even stronger this offseason. At a time when the NHL salary cap is exploding, with nine teams projected to have at least $25 million in cap room, Marner should become one of the highest-paid NHL players ever with his next contract. Advertisement Mitch Marner stats: 102 points (75 assists, 27 goals), +18 plus/minus, 6 power-play goals, 7 game-winning goals, 15.6% shooting rate, 4 blocks, 49 hits, 56 takeaways, 106 giveaways Let's dive into some of the top potential landing spots for Marner in NHL free agency. Anaheim Ducks Credit: Nick Turchiaro-Imagn Images The Anaheim Ducks already made a splash this offseason with the Chris Kreider trade and they aren't done yet. Among the early NHL rumors since the end of the regular season regarding Marner, Anaheim has been linked as one of his top potential landing spots. On the surface, signing with a team that hasn't made the playoffs since 2018 might not sound appealing to Marner. However, Anaheim has the third-most projected cap space available. Furthermore, Jacob Trouba's ($8 million) and Radko Gudas's ($4 million) contracts come off the books next year. That creates both the short- and long-term financial flexibility to afford Marner and it could give Anaheim a new top-six with a pair of wingers capable of producing 27-plus goals and 70-plus points. Sokolowski-Imagn Images The Vegas Golden Knights certainly aren't shy about making splash moves, even more so now. While Vegas won 50 games last season, it also marked the third time in four years that they failed to make it past the second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Marner will certainly give some advantage in negotiations to perennial contenders and we know Vegas wants him. After all, per James Mirtle of The Athletic, a three-team deal was nearly pulled off at the trade deadline that would've brought Marner to the Golden Knights. Vegas would obviously need to clear cap space, but that's become a pastime for this front office. If Marner prioritizes winning over contract earnings, the Golden Knights might be the favorite to land him. Sokolowski-Imagn Images The Utah Mammoth have already made it known that the fourth overall pick is on the trade block. It signals a front office that wants to take a big step forward next season, especially with owner Ryan Smith pushing to put a more fan-friendly product with marquee names on the ice for the home crowd. Marner checks that box and Utah can offer him the payday he's looking for. The Mammoth could also strengthen their pitch during the 2025 NHL Draft if they can flip the No. 4 pick for a high-end talent who fits within the timeline of an organization that wants to win in the next three years. A relocated franchise needs to take a big swing to build strong support locally. Landing a player of Marner's caliber and then building around him accomplishes that. Advertisement Utah Mammoth cap space (PuckPedia): $20.357 million Carolina Hurricanes Credit: James Guillory-Imagn Images The Carolina Hurricanes are coming off a trip to the Eastern Conference Finals, a five-game series loss to the Florida Panthers that showed a weakness for this club. During the regular season, Carolina ranked 10th in points percentage (.604) but just 25th in power play percentage (18.7 percent). Marner had the 10th-most goals created per game (0.44) in hockey and he ranked 11th in power-play points (33). While he declined a trade to Carolina in early March, circumstances have now changed. The Hurricanes have both the money and roster to provide Marner with everything he's prioritizing in NHL free agency. Carolina Hurricanes cap space (PuckPedia): $28.416 million Chicago Blackhawks Credit: Rob Gray-Imagn Images The Chicago Blackhawks badly wanted the lottery to work out in their favor so they could land Michael Misa in the 2025 NHL Draft. With that now off the table, splurging in NHL free agency is the best avenue to build around Connor Bedard. This is a franchise that has won a single playoff game (Aug. 16, 2020) – excluding the qualifying round – since April 24, 2016. To make matters worse, questions are being raised regarding the ability of the Blackhawks' front office to build around a franchise-changing talent like Bedard. Chicago would need to overpay to land Marner and he won't make them an instant contender, but signing him will finally give Bedard some help and it'll give the Blackhawks a little more credibility moving forward. Maple Leafs rumors: Mitch Marner not expected to return to Toronto in free agency

The post Maple Leafs rumors: Mitch Marner not expected to return to Toronto in free agency appeared first on ClutchPoints. The Toronto Maple Leafs have several key players hitting NHL free agency, and arguably the biggest of them all is Mitch Marner. By the sounds of it, he won't be returning. Advertisement NHL insider Andy Strickland reported Friday that Marner is expected to be playing for a new team in 2025-26: 'Can confirm Mitch Marner will not be returning to Toronto. Will be playing for a new team come next season.' Strickland wrote on X. If this is indeed true, it's not a huge surprise. The Maple Leafs reportedly attempted to trade for Mikko Rantanen at the deadline, offering Marner to the Carolina Hurricanes, but he ultimately remained with the team. Marner has stayed rather quiet on his future, and after Toronto's brutal exit at the hands of the Florida Panthers, he refused to speak on what the next move will be: 'I've always loved my time here. I've loved being here,' Marner said on the team's locker clean-out day. 'Like I said to you guys the other night, I have been so grateful and, you know, haven't processed anything yet. It's still so fresh and losing sucks.' Advertisement 'In the next couple of weeks, I'll sit down with my wife and we'll start talking,' Marner continued. 'Trying to figure out what's next.' Marner decided not to negotiate a new deal with the Maple Leafs during the regular season and instead wanted to wait until free agency. The reality is that many teams will be vying for his signature. The veteran led Toronto in points in 2024-25, scoring 27 goals and tallying 75 assists. While he is a crucial piece for the Maple Leafs, this current core hasn't been able to get the franchise over the hump and make a Stanley Cup. Perhaps they do need a new recipe for success, and that likely won't include Marner. Wherever he ends up, the superstar will secure a major payday. NHL trade rumor: Edmonton Oilers eye bold eight-year deal in less than 24 hours after Stanley Cup loss

Edmonton Oilers during Game Five of the 2025 NHL Stanley Cup Final (Credit: Getty Images) The Edmonton Oilers were eliminated from the Stanley Cup Final barely a day ago, but they are already shifting focus to offseason business. According to reports from Andy Strickland of FanDuel Sports Network and Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal, the Oilers are in advanced talks to sign forward Trent Frederic to an eight-year contract extension. The deal is expected to carry an average annual value around $4 million. It's a bold move, considering Frederic's limited impact during the postseason and the fact that the Oilers have major cap decisions looming. Frederic played in 22 playoff games but produced just one goal and four points. Salary cap implications of Frederic deal raise eyebrows Edmonton currently holds just under $12 million in cap space, with 19 players signed for next season. With restricted free agent Evan Bouchard likely to command a sizeable raise and captain Connor McDavid eligible for an extension soon, dedicating a large portion of cap room to a bottom-six forward like Frederic has sparked debate. Frederic is coming off a two-year, $4.6 million deal with a $2.3 million cap hit. If the rumored extension at $4 million AAV materializes, it would represent a significant raise for a player projected to fill a third-line role. His best season came with Boston in 2023-24, where he notched 18 goals and 40 points. Stan Bowman wastes no time reshaping Oilers roster This deal could be the first domino in what promises to be a pivotal offseason for the Oilers. The decision to jump on a max-term agreement with Frederic so soon after the Stanley Cup loss signals urgency from management to define the team's direction before free agency opens on July 1.
