Gujarat to enrol record 1.5 lakh children in Anganwadis, to achieve 87.6 per cent pre-primary education enrolment rate
GANDHINAGAR: Gujarat's Anganwadi Praveshotsav will enrol over 1.50 lakh children across more than 53,000 Anganwadis in the state in 2025, which includes around 77,570 boys and 73,379 girls, according to an official release. To provide quality pre-primary education for the holistic development and a bright future for the children of the state, the Anganwadi Praveshotsav is held every year to enrol children aged between 3 and 6 years into Anganwadis. Through the dedicated efforts of the state government to ensure education for all, the future of children in Gujarat is transforming into a brighter one. Under the Anganwadi Praveshotsav, over 5 lakh children have been enrolled in Anganwadis in the past three years, including 2.68 lakh boys and more than 2.53 lakh girls, the release said. Gujarat's Anganwadi Praveshotsav rate is the highest in the country. While the national enrollment rate for pre-primary education in Anganwadis in 2024 is 66.8 per cent, Gujarat has recorded a significantly higher enrollment rate of 87.6 per cent for children aged 3 years. LKG, UKG classes to commence in 120 anganwadis this year
Hubballi: In a move to strengthen early childhood education at govt-run anganwadi centres, the women and child welfare department will introduce LKG and UKG classes at 120 centres in the district starting this academic year. The education department has already initiated similar efforts in govt primary schools. The state govt earlier announced the launch of pre-primary education in various districts, which is now being implemented. Admitting children to pre-KG has become expensive in private institutions. Today, the obsession with English-medium schools has increased among parents. Parents want their children to study in convents even if they have to work. This is also causing enrolment in govt schools to decline. Realising this, the Women and Child Welfare Department decided to teach pre-primary education across the state. Through this, it started an effort to attract parents to govt Anganwadis. There is a rising demand for LKG/UKG in schools among parents, especially in rural areas. In the district, PM SHRI schools that have started pre-KG are running at full strength. The classrooms for these children have been designed to be attractive and colourful. Deputy Director of the Women and Child Welfare Department, Dharwad, Huligemma Kukanur, said that there are 1,622 anganwadis functioning in the district. The department asked for a list of anganwadis to start pre-KG classes. Therefore, a list of 120 anganwadis has been sent to the govt for approval. Soon, after directions from the govt, the classes will start, she said. Shobha Karikatti, a contract teacher at PM SHRI School, Amargol, said that in UKG, 35 children and in LKG, 27 children were admitted, running at full strength. Teaching methods are different in private institutions. Activity-based education is our first priority. For that, we revised many toys, materials, flashcards, notes for teachers, etc. Pre-KG teachers will be trained at the District Institute of Education and Training every year. The English language is also included for children. For the intellectual and mental development of children, activity-based teaching is provided, she said.

Anganwadis seek extension of welfare schemes to them
Anganwadi workers and Helpers staged a protest, on the call given by the Anganwadi Workers and Helpers Union, an affiliate of the CITU, at the Gandhi statue near GVMC and placed a memorandum at the feet of the Mahatma, on Monday, demanding implementation of government welfare schemes. The other demands include: stop showing them as 'government employees' in the official record as they were only being paid a honorarium. Demanding an immediate response from the government to their demands, Union leader K. Venkata Lakshmi said that the wages of the Anganwadis were not hiked for the past six years though the prices of essential commodities were skyrocketing. She said that the Anganwadis were living a hand-to-mouth existence with their wages remaining stagnant and prices spiralling. She sought that the government should recognise the services of the Anganwadi workers and helpers and extend the benefit of welfare schemes like Thalliki Vandanam, pensions, rice cards and housing to them. Union honorary secretary Mani, honorary advisor Brundavathi, district general secretary Devi, treasurer K. Padmavathi, district leaders Sridevi, Satyavathi, Begum, Sivalakshmi, Venkatalakshmi and Durga were among those who participated.

One killed in house collapse amid heavy rain in Karnataka
One person died and another went missing in separate rain-related incidents across the state, which suffered unrelenting rains over the past week. The state also reported several incidents of flooding, house collapse, and road blockages. Authorities in Belagavi, Dharwad and Malnad districts have issued alerts and declared holidays for all educational insitutions. A 65-year-old woman, identified as Pakirawwa Haveri, died after her mud house collapsed while she was asleep early on Friday, police said. 'She was stuck in the debris of mud and stones. She was found dead by the time the neighbours were able to retrieve her body,' police Bhimashankar Guled. The Gokak rural police said that the structure, weakened by incessant rains, gave way around dawn. Haveri was declared brought dead at the Gokak government hospital. Meanwhile, a 58-year-old man, identified as Hussainsab Kalasa, went missing after his two-wheeler was swept away in an overflowing drain at Hubbali city on Thursday night, police said . 'While the passersby were able to rescue the pillion rider, Kalasa remained untraceable at the time of reporting,' said Bhimashankar Guled. In Yaragatti taluk, 42-year-old Pakirappa Bhimappa Banyagol from Gokak town was swept away along with his bike while crossing a canal at Chikkabadanur during a flash flood late on Thursday night. He was found stuck in debris on Friday nearly two kilometres from the spot he fell, said police. 'Police and people who were searching for him found him stuck on Friday morning. They retrieved him, took him out and shifted to the primary health center at Yaragatti where he was reportedly recovering,' said Muragod police inspector IM Matapati. Meanwhile, in Karwar in Uttara Kannada district, hundreds of homes submerged and several low lying areas were inundated, officials said on Friday. The city was also struck by a landslide that occurred near Sai Mandir on Dobighat Road early on Thursday morning, officials said. With heavy rainfall continuing across coastal, north-interior, and south-interior Karnataka, the IMD issued a red alert for June 13 across multiple districts including Udupi, Uttara Kannada, Belagavi, Dharwad, Gadag, Kodagu, and Shivamogga. District administrations responded by declaring holidays for Anganwadis and schools in several areas, including Udupi, where deputy commissioner K Vidyakumari confirmed the precautionary closure.
