Soccer-UEFA to permit water bottles for Women's Euro fans as Swiss temperatures soar

European soccer governing body UEFA said on Tuesday that the normally strict security rules would be relaxed to allow fans attending matches on the first two days (July 2 and 3) of Euro 2025 to bring a half-litre plastic or aluminium water bottle into the stadium. No glass bottles will be allowed. The usual conditions attached to Euro 2025 tickets state that no "bottles, jugs or cans of any kind, as well as other objects made from plastic, glass or any other fragile materials" may be brought into any of the stadiums, with exceptions made for medical containers. According to meteorological service MeteoSwiss, the temperature in Basel is expected to reach 35 degrees ahead of Switzerland's opening game against Norway on Wednesday evening, with similar temperatures expected throughout the country. "We want you to feel safe during Women's EURO so you can enjoy your tournament experience to the max even when high temperatures hit," UEFA said in a statement on their website advising fans to stay in the shade and to keep themselves hydrated. UEFA competition rules also allow for cooling breaks during the games if temperatures are above 35 degrees Celsius, with referees also allowed to use their discretion. The four games that fans will be allowed to bring water bottles to are Iceland v Finland (July 2, Thun), Switzerland v Norway (July 2, Basel), Belgium v Italy (July 3, Sion) and Spain v Portugal (July 3, Bern). Bayern Munich beat Man United to win maiden women's W7F title

Matches in the $5 million prize-pool tournament consisted of two 15-minute halves on half-sized pitches, with golden goals in extra time for tiebreakers. Simi Awujo gave United the lead in the 14th minute with a brilliant shot into the top corner, her third goal of the tournament. Bayern equalised in the second half when Momoko Tanikawa scored with a left-foot strike, and Sarah Zadrazil clinched the victory four minutes from time with a powerful shot. "It was such an important goal. So I just ran to the teammates that couldn't play because we are all one big family and it was also for them that we are champions now," Zadrazil said. The tournament, featuring elite European clubs including Manchester City, Paris St Germain, AS Roma, Sweden's FC Rosengard, Ajax Amsterdam and Benfica, culminated in a final-day showcase including two semi-finals, with PSG beating City 3-1 to take third place. The event launched two social initiatives -- 'Community Champions', awarding $10,000 grants to three local non-profit organisations, and 'Rising 7's', aimed at countering the trend of girls dropping out of sports during adolescence. Soccer-Bochum, Kiel relegated, Heidenheim get lifeline with win at Union

Bochum, who had been promoted back in 2021, suffered a 4-1 home loss to European hopefuls Mainz and are bottom on 22 points, three behind Holstein Kiel in 17th, with one match left. The hosts went into the game needing a win to have any chances of staying up but Mainz went in front in first-half stoppage time thanks to Nadiem Amiri's superb free kick. Phillipp Mwene struck eight minutes after the restart and Jonathan Burkardt made it 3-0 to seal Bochum's fate and lift Mainz into sixth place that leads to the Conference League competition. Bochum cut the deficit through Gerrit Holtmann's low drive before Pual Nebel scored for Mainz in stoppage time. Kiel, who won promotion last season, took a 24th-minute lead through Lasse Rosenboom but Freiburg, battling for a top-four finish and Champions League football next season, levelled in stoppage time through Johan Manzambi before Lukas Hoeler headed in at the far post to make it 2-1. Freiburg are fourth on 55 points, with Borussia Dortmund, in fifth on 51, taking on Bayer Leverkusen on Sunday. Heidenheim, winners 3-0 at Union Berlin, are in the relegation playoff spot in 16th, two points behind St Pauli who travel to Eintracht Frankfurt on Sunday.
