A Father Braces for Life After a Plane Crash Took His ‘Everything'
Before dawn, in the solitude of his upstairs room, Anil Ambalal Patel prepared to say a last goodbye to the couple who had brought love back into his life. Lingering in his bed, the city around him still asleep, he stared at the two faces on his phone screen: his son, Harshit, and his daughter-in-law, Pooja. He stared and stared, and then moved the phone close to his lips, giving each forehead a kiss. They were gone now, and what little joy he had finally found after years of hardship was gone, too. On this day, he would be with them once more as he scattered their ashes in the Narmada River, at the junction where three streams meet. Twelve days earlier, Mr. Patel, a 60-year-old widower who works for a security company in Ahmedabad, India, had wished Harshit and Pooja safe travels after they spent two weeks with him on a surprise visit from Britain, where they had moved in search of a better life. And then suddenly they were taken from him, killed along with 239 others when Air India Flight 171 crashed soon after it took off on June 12 and burst into an inferno. 'They were my everything,' he said of the couple in an interview. 'They were my support.' In its vast sprawl, in its deep inequality, India can feel like a pit that swallows people like the Patels — the poor, the aspiring — and renders them nameless, numbers rounded off in a nation of 1.4 billion people. Visa scam: Mangaluru Police arrest two more from Maharashtra; 289 job seekers duped of Rs 4.5 crore
MANGALURU: The CCB team of Mangaluru City Police has arrested two more persons from Maharashtra in connection with the visa scam involving Hireglow Elegant Overseas International (OPC) Private Limited, which allegedly defrauded nearly 289 overseas job aspirants. Mangaluru City Police Commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy said the arrested accused are Dil Shaad Abdul Sathar Khan (45), a resident of Navi Mumbai, and Sahukari Kishore Kumar alias Anil Patel (34), from Dombivli, Thane. Earlier, another accused, Masiulla Atiulla Khan (36) from Mumbai, was arrested in connection with the overseas job recruitment scam reported at Mangaluru East Police Station in May. The accused had opened an office of Hireglow Elegant Overseas International (OPC) Private Limited at Bendoorwell in the city, promising overseas jobs. They allegedly collected nearly Rs 4.5 crore from around 289 people but failed to provide job visas as promised. A case has been registered under Sections 316(2), 318(4), read with 3(5) of the BNS, the Police Commissioner said. Dil Shaad Khan and Anil Patel were produced before court and have been remanded to police custody for further investigation. Meanwhile, Masiulla Atiulla Khan remains in judicial custody. It may be recalled that Lawrence D'Souza, President of the Dakshina Kannada District Congress Labourers' Cell, had earlier demanded a thorough probe into the scam, which affected job seekers from Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, and other parts of South India. He said many paid between Rs 1.85 lakh and Rs 5 lakh for job placements in countries such as New Zealand, Azerbaijan, and Singapore. Meanwhile, Avaneesh Shukla, Protector of Emigrants (POE) for Karnataka and Goa under the Ministry of External Affairs, visited Mangaluru after receiving credible information about unauthorised overseas job interviews. Following this, the City Police Commissioner suspended two officers with immediate effect for failing to take appropriate legal action against the firm.

Asiatic lion at Safari Park facing health challenges
Kanpur: Geego, an Asiatic lion, at Etawah Safari Park, is currently facing health challenges. The 17-year-old big cat's condition has drawn concern as it has a diminished appetite and digestive complications, specifically constipation. Director Anil Patel confirmed that the Safari Park's veterinary staff is actively treating and monitoring Geego's medical condition The director said that the veterinary team initiated a comprehensive treatment plan, providing Geego with specialised medications and a modified diet to address his digestive issues. "The lion's daily food intake reduced significantly over the past week, and is being observed by the medical staff," he said and added, "Senior veterinarians conducted regular check-ups to assess its vital signs and overall health status. " Safari sources informed that given Geego's advanced age, the medical team is taking extra precautions in its treatment approach. "The Safari Park also consulted with wildlife experts from neighbouring facilities to ensure the best possible care. The lion is being kept in a controlled environment where his movements and behaviour can be closely monitored," the sources added. The park officials implemented a special feeding schedule, offering smaller, more frequent meals to encourage eating. The medical staff is administering necessary supplements to maintain Geego's strength during this period. Temperature-controlled quarters have been arranged to ensure its comfort while recovering. The veterinary team is optimistic about its response to the treatment, though they acknowledge that recovery might take time considering its age. Other lions in the Safari Park continue their regular routines while Geego receives specialised care in a separate enclosure. The park continues to maintain its regular visiting hours while ensuring minimal disturbance to Geego during its recovery period.

Death toll in India plane crash rises to at least 279
The death toll from the fiery crash of a London-bound passenger jet in an Indian city climbed to 279 on Saturday as officials sought to match the DNA of victims with their grieving relatives. The Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner issued a mayday call shortly before it crashed around lunchtime on Thursday, bursting into a fireball as it hit residential buildings. A police source said on Saturday that 279 bodies had been found at the crash site in the western Indian city of Ahmedabad, making it one of the worst plane disasters of the 21st century. "Nobody can fill the void left by loss," said Imtiyaz Ali, whose younger brother boarded the plane. "I can't even begin to explain what's going on inside me," he told AFP. There was just one survivor out of 242 passengers and crew on board the jet when it crashed, leaving the tailpiece of the aircraft jutting out of a hostel for medical staff. Emergency services kept up their recovery efforts on Saturday, extracting a badly burnt body from the tailpiece before cranes were used to remove the wreckage. At least 38 people were killed on the ground. "I saw my child for the first time in two years, it was a great time," said Anil Patel, whose son and daughter-in-law had surprised him with a visit before boarding the Air India flight. "And now, there is nothing," he said, breaking down in tears. "Whatever the gods wanted has happened." - Search for black box - Distraught relatives of passengers have been providing DNA samples in Ahmedabad, with some having to fly to India to help with the process. The first body of a passenger to be handed over to relatives was placed in a white coffin on Saturday before being transported in an ambulance with a police escort, footage from the state government showed. Air India said there were 169 Indian passengers, 53 British, seven Portuguese and a Canadian on board the flight, as well as 12 crew members. The official casualty number will not be finalised until the slow process of DNA identification is completed. Those killed ranged from a top politician to a teenage tea seller. The lone survivor, Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, 40, said even he could not explain how he survived. "Initially, I too thought that I was about to die, but then I opened my eyes and realised that I was still alive," Ramesh, a British citizen, told national broadcaster DD News from his hospital bed. Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu said on Friday that a flight data recorder, or black box, had been recovered, saying it would "significantly aid" investigations. Forensic teams are still looking for the second black box as they probe why the plane lost height and crashed straight after takeoff. The aviation minister said on Saturday that authorities "felt the need to do an extended surveillance of the Boeing 787 planes", with eight out of Air India's 34 Dreamliners inspected so far. Officials will take "whatever necessary steps are needed" to determine the cause of the disaster as soon as possible, he said. The US planemaker said it was in touch with Air India and stood "ready to support them" over the incident. A source close to the case said it was the first 787 Dreamliner crash.
