UAE: Indian family seeks answers after engineer son dies aboard Sharjah vessel
Those were the final words Anurag Tiwari said to his father during a video call on the evening of June 28. The next morning, the 33-year-old marine engineer from Lucknow left Dubai for Sharjah to board the commercial vessel Jana 505, where he was to begin a new assignment. Before the day was over, the family received the devastating news: Anurag was dead. His father, Anil Tiwari, recounted their last exchange. Speaking to Khaleej Times from his home, he said he had messaged Anurag 'Best of luck' at 4am India time (2.30am UAE time) on June 29. Stay up to date with the latest news. Follow KT on WhatsApp Channels. 'He responded immediately, so I knew he was awake and probably preparing to leave. I didn't call then,' he said. 'But when I tried (to call) at 7am and got no reply, I assumed he was busy. Later, when even my messages went unanswered, I thought it must be a network issue.' At 9.38pm, the family received a call informing them that Anurag was no more. What happened at the ship? According to an email from the Mumbai-based placement agency, Avishka Shipping Pvt Ltd (ASPL), Anurag was found unconscious in the ship's engine room. CPR was administered, and he was transported by crew boat to the port, but emergency responders found no pulse during the ECG. A preliminary forensic report cited heatstroke leading to multi-organ failure as the cause of death. Khaleej Times contacted Avishka Shipping Pvt Ltd through email and phone calls. No response was received at the time of publication. The family was not convinced, saying that the official explanation has not addressed their concerns. They are now calling for an independent investigation into the circumstances of Anurag's death. Anil questioned why his son was allegedly sent alone into the engine room, a task he claims should have been carried out in teams. 'Anurag had clearly told us that no one would go in alone. The job was to be done together. Then why was he by himself?' The family also believes that critical safety procedures may not have been followed. 'The SOP clearly warns about toxic gases, and the area was supposed to be ventilated before anyone entered,' Anil said. He added that the sequence of events remains unclear. 'There's no timeline: when exactly he was sent to the engine room, who found him, or what immediate medical aid was provided. None of that has been shared with us.' Anil also questioned the emergency response. 'If he was still breathing but unconscious, why was CPR performed? That's generally done when the heart stops. We just want honest answers.' 'A serious discrepancy' Anurag had joined the crew in Dubai on June 19. He was working as a third engineer for Singapore-headquartered Synergy Ship Arabia, which was overseeing the commissioning of Jana 505, a jack-up vessel owned by a Saudi conglomerate. In a letter to the family, ASPL's general manager stated that Anurag collapsed during offloading operations and was found in the engine room. However, Anil said they were initially told that his son had fainted on the deck. 'That's a serious discrepancy. The deck and the engine room are entirely different locations.' The Indian Consulate in Dubai, responding to Khaleej Times said: 'The Consulate was in constant touch with the bereaved family and extended all possible assistance for the repatriation of the mortal remains.' Anurag's body arrived in Lucknow on July 5 and was cremated that evening. At home, the grief is still raw. 'My wife and daughter-in-law have fainted twice. They are inconsolable,' Anil said. 'His three-year-old son keeps asking for him. As if he senses something.' A life full of promise Anurag had recently purchased a car and was planning to pursue an academic course in shipping in the UK after completing this assignment. 'He had dreams. He was working hard for his family,' Anil said. 'Now we're left with heartbreak, silence, and questions.' The family is urging UAE authorities to conduct a thorough inquiry, including a toxicology report. 'We request that his blood samples be examined for signs of toxic gas inhalation,' Anil said. 'A proper investigation must be conducted to identify what went wrong and who may be responsible. A life was lost, and a 30-year-old wife, a three-year-old child, and elderly parents were left shattered," he added.

Lucknow engineer joins ship crew in Sharjah, found dead hours later
Lucknow: Hours after joining his crew onboard a commercial ship in Sharjah in UAE, a 33-year-old engineer from Lucknow was found mysteriously dead on the vessel. Anurag Tiwari , a '3rd engineer' in the shipping line, was found dead on June 29 afternoon. An alumnus of St Francis College, Lucknow, Anurag was the eldest son of Anil Tiwari, a former UPPCL officer. Anil Tiwari on Thursday sought help from external affairs minister S Jaishankar to bring his son's body home. "@@DrSJaishankar Sir, my son Anurag Tiwari (Passport: W4768296), hired by Synergy Ship Arabia, boarded vessel JANA 505 at Sharjah, UAE on 29.06.2025. He died the same day. No clear cause of death, no help from the company. Kindly help with urgent repatriation of his body," Tiwari posted. Anurag had joined his team in Sharjah on June 28 and even spoke to his father over a video call. "During video call, Anurag informed me that commissioning of Jana 505 was a challenging task, and there was a sense of anxiety among teammates. The weather was hot, but he was mentally and physically fit for the task," Anil told TOI on Thursday. Anurag was hired by Mumbai-based recruitment and placement service agency, Avishka Shipping Private Limited (ASPL), for Singapore headquartered Synergy Ship Arabia (Part of Synergy Marine Group-owned by Kerala born Captain Rajesh Unni). by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Beyond Text Generation: An AI Tool That Helps You Write Better Grammarly Install Now Undo In an e-mail to Anil Tiwari while informing about his son's demise, general manager of ASPL, Avdhut Dhaybar, wrote: "On June 29 while offloading operation of vessel Jana 505, Anurag was found unconscious in the engine room. Despite immediate CPR and swift transfer to the jetty via crew boat, the ambulance medical team declared him dead, as they didn't find any pulse during ECG assessment. The information was communicated by Jana Marine and Synergy Ship Arabia. " Anil said, "ASPL team informed me over phone that Anurag fainted on deck during duty. He was brought to the vessel bridge where he was administered CPR. There is a contradiction in the information shared with us as the deck and engine room are not the same." "I have contacted the embassy in UAE via e-mail and X (formerly Twitter) to repatriate my son's body. I want UAE authorities to find the cause of my son's death," added Anil. Anurag was a six-time gold medallist in swimming. Father of a 3-yr-old son, he was planning to head to the UK after the commissioning of the vessel to pursue an academic course in shipping. Synergy Ship Arabia's crew task was to commission Jana 505, a jack up vessel owned by Saudi Arabian conglomerate Jana Marine Service Company (subsidiary of Rashed Al-Rashed & Sons Group).

BJP appoints six state unit chief; West Bengal and Madhya Pradesh soon
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday appointed chiefs for local units in six states and Union territories, and set the ball rolling for a similar process in two other states such as West Bengal, adding to speculation that the election for the national party chief was on the anvil. BJP appoints six state unit chief; West Bengal and Madhya Pradesh soon As the appointment of new party chiefs has been completed in 22 states, all eyes are now on whether the BJP will appoint new heads in three key states –– Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka and Gujarat –– before it finalises the name for the national president. Under the party constitution, the national president can be elected after elections are held in 50% of the states. India has 28 states and seven Union Territories. On Tuesday, the party announced the appointment of Anil Tiwari as the new BJP state chief in Andaman and Nicobar; Ravindra Chavan in Maharashtra; PVN Madhav in Andhra Pradesh; N Ramchander Rao in Telangana; Mahendra Bhatt in Uttarakhand, and Rajeev Bindal in Himachal Pradesh. In Madhya, Pradesh Hemant Khandelwal filed the nomination for the post of state unit president, which is currently held by VD Sharma. In Bengal, the party announced that the election will be on Thursday. Incumbent Bengal unit chief Sukanta Majumdar is the front runner to retain his post. According to a party functionary, by the end of the week, new state unit heads will be in place in 24 states. 'As on date the requirement of appointing new chiefs in 50% of the total states prior to the election of the national president has been met…the next step is for the election in-charge K Laxman to announce the schedule for the election of the national president,' said a party functionary . Responding to a question on whether the party will pick new presidents for the three big states before it begins the process of selecting incumbent president JP Nadda's successor, the functionary said, 'The process of seeking feedback from the cadre in all the three states is more or less over. There are a few districts where appointments have been stalled, but the delay in announcement is not owing to any major discord.' In Karnataka, there was a division in the party on giving the incumbent BY Vijayendra a second term. A section of leaders wanted the 49-year old Vijayendra to continue while a second group cited the party's stance of not promoting dynastic politics to push for a new name. Vijayendra's father is the former CM, BS Yediyurappa. In Uttar Pradesh, too, the process has been mired in controversy as there are various caste groups pushing for their candidate. 'A section of leaders feel that the representative should be an OBC or SC in keeping with the leadership's push to social engineering and giving the marginalised sections more process was also delayed because of the Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj,' said a state leader. The incumbent president, Bhupendra Chaudhary, comes from the backward castes. In Gujarat, where Union minister CR Paatil is the state president, the party is divided over whether to pick a Patel or a tribesperson for the top slot. While the Patels are a hefty vote bank that the BJP relies on, the party is equally keen to keep the scheduled tribes close as they make up about 14.8% of the population.

Tear-Based Biomarker Identified for early detection of keratoconus
New Delhi: Delhi-based biotech company Vgenomics has partnered with Dr. Shroff's Charity Eye Hospital to validate and commercialize a tear-based biomarker , VSP-2224 , for the early detection of keratoconus , a progressive eye disorder affecting the cornea. VSP-2224, identified in tear fluid using Vgenomics' AI-based discovery platform RgenX-LENS, may help detect the disease earlier, before visible symptoms emerge. Clinical validation of VSP-2224 is underway. The biomarker will also be featured in OcuTear, a rapid diagnostic panel Vgenomics is developing for ocular surface diseases. Commenting on the development, Dr Anil Tiwari said, 'This partnership enables us to translate a tear-based biomarker into a clinically viable diagnostic test, with the potential to further develop it into targeted therapeutics.'
