Haryana govt wants to promote EVs in state: Anil Vij

Agency: PTI Last Updated: Chandigarh, Jul 22 (PTI) Haryana Transport Minister Anil Vij on Tuesday said the state government is committed to encouraging pollution-free transportation and is keen on promoting electric vehicles (EVs) across the state. He said challenges such as charging infrastructure, which people are currently facing in adopting EVs, will be resolved soon. Vij further said if EV companies propose any schemes or plans a full-package scheme for promoting sales and infrastructure development, the government will actively consider and implement it. Vij was presiding over a meeting here with representatives from leading EV manufacturers across India, including Mahindra & Mahindra, Tata Motors, Hyundai Motors, MG Motors, and Kia Motors, an official statement said. During the meeting, Vij told the representatives from the companies that the government wants to boost EV adoption in Haryana and expects that an adequate number of charging stations should be available on roads, national highways, and state highways. He also said companies must ensure charging infrastructure so that their EVs can run smoothly on the roads. He urged companies to develop such facilities to support EV adoption, making them more attractive and convenient for users. Referring to a recent meeting held by Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari, Vij said he said that people often travel long distances in personal vehicles and should have access to quality rest stops along the journey, offering toilets, refreshments, and seating facilities, charging stations, which are generally lacking at petrol pumps. According to the official statement, Vij urged the automaker representatives that 'selling EVs should not be the only goal; rather, developing supporting infrastructure should also be a core objective". This will ensure that users do not face difficulties in owning and operating EVs, he said. He reassured the companies that the Haryana government will extend full cooperation in promoting EVs. During the meeting, Vij advised representatives to compare the operating costs of EVs with those of petrol and diesel vehicles to promote the financial benefits of EVs and help users make informed decisions. He suggested that EV companies conduct technical studies to plan infrastructure development and choose Haryana as a pilot project location, assuring complete support from the state. Vij said if EV consumers in Haryana get proper infrastructure like charging stations, it will create a win-win situation for both users and manufacturers' �benefitting consumers while supporting company growth. AMBALA: Haryana's energy, transport and labour minister, Anil Vij, announced on Friday that construction work on a new 100-bedded building at the Ambala Cantonment Civil Hospital has resumed. Once completed, the hospital's capacity will double from 100 to 200 beds, significantly enhancing healthcare services for the region. Designed as a state-of-the-art Critical Care Unit (CCU), the new seven-storey block will be equipped with modern medical infrastructure aimed at providing advanced and emergency care. The facility will focus on infection control, ensuring the safety of regular patients while offering dedicated treatment zones for critical and infectious cases. Anil Vij shared that construction had previously stalled due to a pending case in the High Court and subsequent arbitration proceedings. With the legal matters now resolved and re-tendering completed, the project has resumed with a sanctioned cost of Rs 14.79 crore. The hospital includes two basement levels, one for vehicle parking and other for centralized air-conditioning and gas plants. The third and fourth floors areequipped with Operation Theatres, Super Specialty OTs, patient wards, and a high-dependency Critical Care Unit (CCU). Highlighting the importance of the project, Anil Vij said, 'With the ever-growing number of patients, bed shortage has become a challenge. This new wing will not only address capacity issues but also raise the standard of care, particularly for emergency and infectious cases.' The CCU will feature advanced monitoring systems to track vital signs like heart rate and blood pressure, along with life-saving support including oxygen therapy, emergency interventions, and post-operative care. Specialized wards for Covid-19 and infectious diseases will also be part of the facility. This expansion marks a step forward in strengthening critical care infrastructure in Ambala Cantonment and neighbouring areas.

Keen to have state-of-the-art bus stands, the Haryana transport authorities have planned the Public Private Partnership (PPP) concept as adopted by the Gujarat government. Initially, the Haryana transport department planned to construct bus terminals of Gurgaon, (Sector-29), Karnal and Pipli (Kurukshetra) on PPP model. The department has planned to hand over these bus stands to the private players under the PPP model for 33 years to construct and maintain the bus stand premises. Under the concept, the bus stand will be used by the staffers of the department for movement of buses and the commuters while the commercial portion of it would be looked after by the private player. In lieu of utilisation of the bus stand commercial portion, the private player will give annual lease also. In response to a proposal sent by the transport department in this connection, the state transport minister Anil Vij had recently asked the department to study the model and procedure adopted in other states on PPP mode. Vij had also asked to ensure that there is no loss of revenue to the state. Returning the proposal to the department, Vij had also mentioned on the file: 'Each and every type of sale in the bus stand premises should bet the revenue share surely to the state.' Haryana transport officials say they are encouraged with the experience of already adopted model of PPP for upgradation of bus stand in Faridabad with an expenture of Rs 130 crore which was incurred by the private player. Explaining the concept, a senior officer of the transport department said: 'The private partner is giving an annual lease of Rs 3 crore to the department apart from maintaining the bus stand.' The officer also said: 'Apart from studying the PPP concept as adopted by the Gujarat authorities where the bus stands have been given on 99-year-old lease, we would also study the mode adopted by neighbouring states like Punjab and Uttar Pradesh. However, the PPP concept as adopted by Punjab many years back had not been successful.' After patronising the private-public partnership model for setting up state-of-the-art air-conditioned bus stands in Punjab for three years, the state government in 2010 had decided to set up many of these projects on its own. In 2010, the then state Transport Minister Master Mohan Lal had told The Indian Express 'the existing build, operate and turn (BOT) arrangement to set up state-of-the-art bus stands in the state was not contributing to generate revenue for the department.' However, the Gujarat government had earlier stated that there are iconic bus ports in Vadodara, Ahmedabad, Ranip, Mehsana and Surat. CHANDIGARH: The retaliatory act of snapping power supply to a prestigious Ambala club after he was denied entry over inappropriate attire, proved costly for an executive engineer (XEN). Haryana power minister Anil Vij on Tuesday recommended his suspension after getting a complaint about his "unruly behaviour". The officer, Harish Goel, is currently posted as XEN, Uttar Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam (UHBVN), Yamunanagar. Goel was reportedly not allowed to enter the club on Monday evening for coming in shorts, which is a violation of the club's regulation and dress code. As per the complaint sent on Tuesday by the chairman of Central Phoenix Club, Ambala Cantonment, the officer not only ordered cutting of power supply, but thereafter called the manager, Balinder Singh, and asked him, "Kya baat hai, tumhari light chali gayee or generator chal raha hai, kaisa lag raha hai?" (Wow, there is no power at your place, and the generator is running. How does it feel?) It was alleged in the complaint that Goel displayed "unruly behaviour", and in an apparent act of retaliation, deliberately got the "electricity supply to the club disconnected", at a time when around 50 families were having dinner there. The letter from the club's chairman requested the state minister to act against the executive engineer. Taking cognisance of the club's complaint, the power minister referred the matter to the additional chief secretary (energy) Haryana, recommending the XEN's suspension and seeking his explanation regarding his conduct. Gurgaon: As the number of people dying in road accidents in the state remains uncomfortably high, Haryana govt has mandated a scientific study to identify accidents' root causes. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The initiative aims at analysing each accident, considering factors such as road conditions, speeding, traffic management, stray animals and other potential contributors, to implement effective preventive measures. The findings will be used to identify patterns and trends, which will inform the development of comprehensive safety measures. In 2022, Haryana recorded 11,105 accidents and 5,596 deaths. In 2023, the figures stood at 10,438 accidents and 5,195 deaths, followed by 9,759 accidents and 4,828 deaths in 2024. In 2025, up to May 25, the numbers further decreased to 6,770 accidents and 1,942 deaths. Highlighting the importance of this initiative, Union transport minister Anil Vij said, "Our primary goal is to safeguard the lives of citizens. By understanding why road accidents are taking place, we can take informed actions to improve road safety across the state." In addition to the study, the govt plans to launch awareness campaigns to educate the public about safe driving practices and the importance of adhering to traffic rules. Earlier this month, a budget of Rs 74.5 crore was approved by Haryana fund management committee (FMC) on road safety for the current year to reduce road accident fatalities and enhance the emergency response system across the state. Moreover, as part of its commitment to ensuring safe travel for all, the state govt also adheres to the Haryana road safety policy (2016). According to the official, these efforts have helped in gradually reducing the number of fatalities in accidents. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Zeroing in on vehicles transporting children to and from school, Vij said, "All school buses must undergo regular inspections, and attention should be paid to their condition. A meeting with school transport operators should be scheduled soon, where they must be given clear guidelines to ensure safe commute of children. Non-compliance should be met with challans and vehicle seizure." Meanwhile, institutes of driving training and research (IDTR) will be established in each district of the state. In Gurgaon, a plan was approved for setting up a regional driving training centre. Through these centres, the state aims to promote responsible driving behaviour. The city alone accounted for 1,026 road accidents last year, resulting in 428 fatalities. National highways accounted for 44% of these accidents, with motorcyclists being the most affected group, comprising 41% of the fatalities. Currently, the state has four operational IDTRs - in Rohtak, Bahadurgarh (Jhajjar), Karnal, and Kaithal. An IDTR has been constructed in Bhiwani as well, and it will be made operational soon. Consultants have been appointed for setting up these centres in Nuh and Faridabad.
