Containment begins on Bonnie Lake canyon fire
Jul. 4—The rapid growth of a fire burning south of Cheney has slowed since Thursday evening. According to a Northeast Washington Fire Information news release, crews have established 10% containment of the Seigel Fire Friday morning. Level 3 evacuations remain in effect, though no structures are threatened, said Public Information Officer Anjel Tomayko. That means residents should leave immediately. More smoke may be visible, and the fire "is expected to grow a few acres" as crews begin burn outs, she added. Caroline Saint James' 's reporting was funded by Comma's First Amendment Club.

Jul. 3—A wildfire south of Cheney remains uncontained as of Thursday afternoon. The Siegel Fire, burning near Bonnie Lake and S. While winds have lessened since Wednesday, a Level 3 Evacuation remains in place for the area near the wildfire. That means residents should be leave immediately. The fire's cause is under investigation, though Public Information Officer Anjel Tomayko confirmed it was started by a human. The news release said yesterday's winds forced the flames north. No structures were threatened Thursday afternoon, and those that were Wednesday have since been protected, Tomayko said. "Crews have made good progress," she said, but there is no outlined goal for containment right now. As of 4:45 p.m., a new incident command is determining "a tactical plan for the next few days."
