CM launches development works worth Rs 4,559 crore in Indi

Vijayapura: Chief minister Siddaramaiah said laying foundation stone and inaugurating development works worth Rs 4,559 crore in a single day in Indi is proof of his govt's commitment of development. After performing a puja for a KKRTC bus on the occasion of Shakti scheme touching 500 crore rides, he distributed free tickets to women passengers and launched the logo of the Lemon Development Board. Addressing a public meeting, Siddaramaiah said he laid the foundation stone for projects worth Rs 4,158 crore and inaugurated projects worth Rs 401 crore. He dared the BJP for an open debate to discuss with records the achievements of his govt and the previous BJP govt. He urged people to look at the list of development programmes carried out during his and previous Congress govts. "We transformed Vijayapura, once a barren land, into a green region through irrigation. Earlier, during droughts, people uprooted lemon plants. Then, I came to Indi and assured the lemon growers. Today, by launching the Lemon Development Board logo, we continue the tradition of the Congress to deliver on promises," he asserted. "The BJP-JD(S) falsely claimed the state govt has no funds. We are responding to their false propaganda through people's development and welfare programmes," Siddaramaiah stated. "Isn't it fact that 500 crore women travelling in state buses for free, 1.2 crore families receiving Gruha Lakshmi funds, 1.6 crore households getting 200 units of free electricity, and schemes like Annabhagya and Yuvanidhi helping millions of Kannadigas are all signs of development?" questioned the chief minister, adding that allocating Rs 83,000 crore for development is a clear indication of the Congress' development-focused administration. The event was chaired by local MLA Yashavantharayagouda Patil. Deputy chief minister DK Shivakumar, ministers HC Mahadevappa, Dinesh Gundu Rao, MB Patil, HK Patil, Shivanand Patil, Sharan Prakash Patil, and several other legislators and elected representatives were present.

Govt releases Rs 244 cr as truckers go on strike

Bengaluru: The Karnataka government has said that it has approved the release of Rs 244.10 crore to cover additional expenses such as wholesale and retail margins and transportation charges under the Annabhagya scheme for the months of February to May, 2025. This fund allocation comes in addition to a previously released grant of Rs 2,082.99 crore, which was meant for the purchase of an extra five kg of rice per beneficiary and other related costs for the four-month period, a government order issued on Monday said. The order was issued as the lorry owners transporting rice and other food grains to ration shops across Karnataka decided to go on an indefinite strike starting from Tuesday. A sum of Rs 21.79 crore from the earlier allocation remains unutilised with the Karnataka Food and Civil Supplies Corporation Limited, Bengaluru, resulting in a shortfall for meeting incidental expenses, the order said. The government, upon consideration, approved the release of Rs 244.10 crore specifically to meet the costs of wholesale and retail margins and transportation charges, excluding rice procurement costs, on Monday. "The approved amount will be disbursed under the Annabhagya Scheme for the financial year 2025–26. The funds will be routed through the Khajane-2 financial management software system, directly from the administrative department to the Chief Accounts Officer, Zilla Panchayat, Bengaluru Urban District," the government order read. A senior government official ruled out any dearth of funds, and Rs 199 crore has already been released. 'We will release the amount in the next two days,' he said. GR Shanmukhappa, president of the State Lorry Owners' Association, on Tuesday announced an indefinite strike by the truckers in view of non-payment of dues worth Rs 250 crore. In a video message, Shanmukhappa said, "How can we sustain if we are not paid our four months' dues from March to June? The government has to pay us Rs 250 crore." Taking to social media platform 'X', R Ashoka, Leader of Opposition in the Karnataka Legislative Assembly, hit out at the Chief Minister Siddaramaiah: "You've withheld Rs 250 crore in payments owed to lorry owners for the past six months. How are these poor lorry owners supposed to pay salaries to their drivers? How are they supposed to refuel their lorries with diesel? If the lorry strike disrupts food grain supply and delays the distribution of rations to the poor, who will take responsibility for that?" BJP state unit president BY Vijayendra has urged the Congress government to clear these long-pending dues without further delay and uphold the dignity of those who have faithfully executed their responsibilities. "This is yet another example in a long series of fiscal imprudence under the CM Siddaramaiah-led Congress government. @INCKarnataka Promised welfare, but delivered - debt and despair," he alleged in a post on 'X'.

Karnataka approves Rs 244 cr for Annabhagya amid lorry strike

Bengaluru, July 8 (UNI) The Karnataka government has sanctioned an additional Rs 244.10 crore to cover increased costs under the Annabhagya scheme for the February-May 2025 period, amid a continuing lorry strike triggered by unpaid transportation dues amounting to Rs 250 crore. The newly approved funds are aimed at addressing wholesale and retail margins and transportation charges, excluding the cost of rice procurement. This follows a prior allocation of Rs 2,082.99 crore for purchasing additional rice and other associated expenses under the same scheme, of which Rs 21.79 crore remains unutilized. The lorry strike, now entering a critical phase, has halted food grain movement across the state, raising concerns about ration supply disruptions. Truck owners have warned of worsening logistics delays unless the government settles the long-pending arrears. Opposition parties have slammed the Congress-led administration for what they call fiscal mismanagement and warned that failure to resolve the strike could paralyze the state's public distribution system. They have demanded an immediate resolution to safeguard food security for economically vulnerable sections. The Annabhagya scheme, a flagship welfare program, provides free rice to below-povertyline families and is seen as politically crucial for the ruling dispensation. However, the ongoing financial strain and operational bottlenecks have exposed governance gaps in scheme implementation and payment logistics. The Finance and Food & Civil Supplies departments are expected to hold joint talks with transport unions this week in an attempt to break the deadlock. UNI BDN RKM
