‘Harassed despite dowry of gold and a Volvo', newlywed bride dies of suicide in Tamil Nadu

The husband and in-laws of a 27-year-old woman have been arrested after she died by suicide in Tamil Nadu's Tiruppur, allegedly after facing physical and mental abuse over dowry. The woman, Ridhanya, daughter of garment manufacturer Annadurai, had married 28-year-old Kavin Kumar in April this year. The match was allegedly sealed with a promise of 500 sovereigns (about 4 kg) of gold jewellery and a luxury Volvo car worth Rs 70 lakh, police officials said. According to investigators, only 300 sovereigns were handed over during the wedding, and pressure for the remaining 200 grew steadily, allegedly leading to repeated abuse. On Saturday, Ridhanya left her in-laws' home, saying she was heading to the Mondipalayam temple. Several hours later, police were alerted to a car parked in the area. Inside, they found Ridhanya unresponsive, with foam at her mouth — she had reportedly consumed fumigant pesticide tablets. Her body was sent to the government hospital in Avinashi and handed over to the family on Sunday following a post-mortem. In a series of seven WhatsApp voice messages sent to her father shortly before her death, Ridhanya detailed what she had faced. She accused her husband and his parents of mentally tormenting her daily, and Kavin of allegedly assaulting her. 'I don't like this life. I'm unable to continue,' she said in one message. 'You and mom are my world. I'm sorry, father — everything is over. I'm leaving.' According to her father, Annadurai, Ridhanya had returned home just 15 days into her marriage, shaken and distressed. 'I told her to adjust. I didn't understand then how bad it was,' he said. After repeated pleas from Ridhanya, her mother-in-law visited and apologised, but things didn't change. By the time she returned again, Annadurai said, 'She was completely broken.' He recalled how the family compared their dowry to others, reportedly demanding Rs 100 crore like 'other grooms had received to start businesses'. 'They cheated us,' Annadurai said, urging authorities to ensure no other family suffers as his did. The Cheyur police have arrested Kavin Kumar and his parents, Eswaramoorthy and Chithradevi, on charges including dowry harassment and abetment of suicide. Further investigation is underway.

BJP dividing people by misusing God's name, AIADMK aiding it: CM Stalin

'You screen video insulting leaders like them. And a group running a party in the name of Anna (Annadurai) is watching this with folded hands,' he alleged, in a veiled reference to the Lord Murugan devotees' conference organised recently by Hindu Munnani in Madurai where a video showing the three leaders in poor light was played in the presence of a few former ministers and senior leaders of the AIADMK. He said that while the BJP is talking about threat to religion in TN in the presence of the AIADMK, the real threat was to the BJP's alliance. 'Those who failed to grow their party through missed-calls (sic) are now misusing the name of God for political gains,' he alleged, referring to the BJP's membership drive in the past which attracted criticism from opposition parties that alleged that anyone who dialled a phone number given by the party were considered as enrolled. He pointed out that since the DMK came to power in 2021, consecrations have been done for 3,000 temples, while `84 crore has been allotted for renovation of churches and mosques. Alleging that the AIADMK had mortgaged the party with the BJP, he said that the people of TN should not allow them to mortgage the entire state as well in the future. TN and its people who have self-respect will teach a lesson to those who are against Tamils and those who are aiding them, the CM said, adding that the DMK would return to power, not only in 2026, but also in 2031 and 2036. He said that the rousing welcome people gave him throughout his travel was a proof of the welfare measures implemented by the government.

Will never give up Anna for he is in our blood, says Palaniswami

Amid the row over the recent screening of a video critical of Dravidian stalwarts Periyar E.V. Ramasamy and C.N. Annadurai at the Hindu Munnani's Lord Murugan devotees conference in Madurai, AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami on Thursday declared that his party would not give up Annadurai. Besides, in his first assurance to the people for the 2026 Assembly poll, he vowed to restore peace, prosperity, development, and the State rights, which, he alleged, had been lost under the DMK government. 'This is my first assurance for the 2026 Assembly election,' Mr. Palanswami emphasised in a social media post. He charged that it was the DMK government that gave up the State's rights — from Katchchatheevu to the Cauvery. Rejecting DMK president and Chief Minister M.K. Stalin's observations on the AIADMK's position on Annadurai, Mr. Palaniswami said: 'Do [late DMK leader and former Chief Minister] Karunanidhi's son and the DMK have the competence to utter Anna's name?' Leader's principles Mr. Palaniswami recalled alleged attempts to undermine the late leader's principles and attempts to appropriate the party and the government. He also underlined the founding of the AIADMK by the late leader M.G. Ramachandran. 'We will not give up on Perarignar Anna even for a second, either in our party's name or in our flag, for he is in our blood,' Mr. Palaniswami asserted. DMK govt.'s actions Charging that the DMK government was acting against the principles of Annadurai, Mr. Palaniswami said Mr. Stalin need not offer lessons on Periyar and Anna to the AIADMK cadre. Criticising the DMK and Mr. Stalin for having been a part of the BJP-led Central government between 1999 and 2004, Mr. Palaniswami said: 'It has been the DMK which has mortgaged the rights of Tamil Nadu.' He vowed to restore the State's rights.
