What to read this summer
Now that you're itching to visit your local library, we're thinking you may need a couple of recommendations for summer reads from your favorite Axios Detroit co-authors. Annalise's recs: If you're flying anywhere this summer, you've got to pick up " Less," a witty read about a depressed failed novelist who travels the world. A quick read for animal lovers that has very summer-like seaside vibes is " Remarkably Bright Creatures." I've never rooted so hard for an octopus. If you're looking for something innovative, try Rivers Solomon's " Sorrowland," a novel that threads together themes of horror, fantasy, religion, government and race. I wouldn't say it's a quick beach read, but you won't be able to put it down, and you'll come away with a lot of thoughts. Joe's recs: For a breezy beach read with an edge, check out Fonda Lee's " Jade City," an action-packed fantasy novel with mafioso family drama (think "The Godfather") and magically powered warriors. Go back to the 1980s for acclaimed writer Alan Moore's " Saga of the Swamp Thing" graphic novel series. Moore's take on the classic antihero is complex, touching on topics like gun control, environmental issues and racism. For a gripping tale at sea, try " The Wager," David Grann's exhaustively researched account of an 18th-century shipwreck and the ensuing fight for survival.

'Addictive' TV thriller is finally completely free to binge on UK streamer
A 'riveting and addictive' legal thriller is streaming for free right now (Picture: Disney General Entertainment Con) A legal drama thriller from legendary producer Shonda Rhimes is now available to binge in full for free. First hitting screens in 2014, How to Get Away with Murder was produced by Rhimes, best known for working on other shows including Grey's Anatomy, Scandal, Bridgerton and The Residence. The show – which ran for six seasons before ending in 2020 – followed Annalise Keating (Viola Davis), a defence attorney and law professor at a prestigious university in Philadelphia who becomes entangled in a murder plot with five of her students. The cast also included Alfred Enoch, Jack Falahee, Aja Naomi King, Matt McGorry, and Karla Souza as Annalise's students, while Charlie Weber and Liza Weil played her employees. Last year fans of the series were left devastated when it was removed from Netflix, with one declaring it was being 'snatched away' from them. But now, nearly eight months later, it's available again for UK viewers. Even better – it's also streaming for free on Channel 4. How to Get Away with Murder ran from 2014 until 2020 and starred Viola Davis (Picture: Disney General Entertainment Con) How to Get Away with Murder boasts an impressive 88% rating on review site Rotten Tomatoes. When reviewing the first season, the Associated Press wrote: 'Murder promises to be twisty, wicked, dark and fun. And it stars Viola Davis, who brings life to a character of endless calculations and mystery.' 'The most addictive new thriller on TV,' Entertainment Weekly declared. 'Smart, slick and sexy, How to Get Away with Murder might be your new obsession,' the Boston Herald added. It also picked up many fans as soon as it started, with some calling it 'riveting', 'addictive' and 'captivating'. It followed a legal professor who got wrapped up in a murder plot with her students (Picture: Disney General Entertainment Con) Many also praised Viola's 'magnetic presence'. 'Viola Davis is a powerful screen presence — almost too strong for TV. But she commands the small screen like few actors can,' the Baltimore Sun explained. The actress, who went on to also find success starring in The Help and Fences and Suicide Squad, received widespread critical acclaim for her performance in the series. She became the first Black woman to win a Primetime Emmy Award for outstanding lead actress in a drama series, won two Screen Actors Guild Award for outstanding performance by a female actor in a drama series, and was nominated for Golden Globes and Critics' Choice Awards. Viola's performance was called 'magnetic' (Picture: Lionel Hahn/ Getty Images) She previously spoke to Shondaland about how starring in How to Get Away with Murder marked a turning point in her career. 'I see Annalise as that point in my career where something switched. And what it did was wake me up to the value of using myself. And what I mean by that is that it changed the way people saw a Black woman,' she said. 'Every role that I got before this time, not that I wasn't extremely happy with those roles, and that's including the roles I had onstage, but they very much were roles that you could see me in. 'How to Get Away with Murder was thinking outside of the box. This was my way of subverting that narrative or that reality that we have of what a leading lady should look like, their sexuality should look like, womanhood should look like. It was my opportunity to just turn that on its head, and I had to because I was in the role. So, I could either play it like people expected me to play it, or I could really use myself and use what I know about life, and what I know womanhood to be, and sexuality to be, and Blackness to be — it was my way to just sort of inject my voice and my artistry.' Pete Wicks is left fuming over hilarious prank as one of his employees jokes she is quitting to star on Love Island
The Staying Relevant Podcast took to their Instagram account on Tuesday to share the hilarious moment Pete Wicks was pranked by one of his employees. The former TOWIE star, 37, who regularly hosts the podcast with his best pal Sam Thompson, 32, was completely unaware he was being filmed as his employee dropped a bombshell on him. At the beginning of the clip, she coyly told Pete that she had been having conversations with a Love Island producer to appear on the show, news which left him gob-smacked. Looking 'nervously' at Pete, she said: 'So Pete, I actually do have another thing to tell you.' Pete replied: 'F*****g hell' under his breath as he kept his head down making notes waiting for her to continue. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new Showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. She added: 'And I'm actually a little bit nervous for this... I've been in conversations with a Love Island producer, and they've asked me to fly out next Friday for the Sunday episode.' Appearing lost for words, Pete replied: 'You're not going on Love Island' as his employee Annalise confirmed: 'Yeah, I am.' Pete then fumed: 'Oh f**k off Annalise' as she replied: 'No I am, I've been really nervous to tell you.' Still raging, Pete added: 'You alright in the f*****g head? Is this why you've been off so much in f*****g May? Cause you've been at auditions not f*****g off all over the f*****g Europe.' Annalise cheekily replied: 'No, no no no no I done it on my lunch break.' Pete then changed his tune, saying: Hold on, do you actually really want to do this?' and Annalise confirmed: 'Yeah, I do.' Pete then showed his soft side as he stood up to hug Annalise, saying: 'Then I'm very happy for you. You take as much time as you need.' The pair shared a sweet hug as Annalise replied: 'Aw, I wasn't expecting that.' Pulling away to go back to his end of the desk, Pete replied: 'Well no, I mean, it's f*****g ridiculous.' Annalise replied: 'I mean it's obviously not great timing, and it's been a really tough decision.' Pete then said: 'Does that mean you're leaving us?' Confirming she won't be leaving permanently, Annalise replied: 'Yeah, so well next week, not permanently if you guys will obviously keep me.' Pete said: 'Well you're not going to want to f*****g work here if you've done that.' Denying that she would leave her job, she said: 'No, I'll still work here.' Pete sweetly replied: 'If you ever want to still work here then the job is yours. But that is f*****g ridiculous.' Annalise said: 'I've literally watched it since like series one, I'm obsessed, like I love it.' Pete jokingly swiped: 'I've watched crime documentaries since they were on Netflix, but I haven't killed anyone yet.' The room erupted into laughter as he added: 'But you know I'm very happy for you if that's what you really want and that's what you then deserve, everyone will get behind you. We'll all f*****g support you.' 'I may even fly out, I'll tell you what I'll do, I'll come out, do they have to meet the family and that?' The room confirmed islanders get to see their family during their stint, and Pete sweetly said: 'I'll come and be your person.' He added: 'Is this serious?' and Annalise cheekily smiled replying: 'No'. Shaking his head and looking lost for words, Pete simply said: 'F*****g c***s.' The hilarious prank video comes after Pete cut a smart figure as he hosted a Dogs Trust fundraiser at the Kennel Club in London on Tuesday. The TV personality, who has been a Dogs Trust ambassador for many years, is involved in several initiatives to support the charity. He has also filmed series of 'For Dogs Sake' for the Dogs Trust, which has led to a significant increase in adoption applications. For the fundraiser, Pete looked incredibly suave in a navy blue pinstripe suit, consisting of a double-breasted blazer and matching trousers. He paired brown suede loafers with his smart ensemble as he smiled for the cameras during the event. During the event, Pete was also joined by a host of stars including his Strictly Come Dancing dance partner Jowita Przystal, 30. The pair sparked romance rumours last year during their stint on the show, however, they have both publicly denied any romantic relationship, clarifying that they are just good friends. Jowita looked sensational in a black-and-white mini dress which featured a plunging V-neckline as she beamed alongside Pete. To complete her look, the pro dancer added inches to her frame with a pair of black over-the-knee boots and further accessorised with a silver layered necklace. Also in attendance were Kirsty Gallacher, Charlotte Hawkins, Jay Bothroyd, and Jacquie Beltrao.

Honoring a family legacy and protecting future K-9s
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) — A beloved tradition returns this year, this time with the goal of protecting future K-9 officers by providing them with body armor. It all began in 2022 with a generous offer from young Annalise Kenyon. She wanted to donate all of her birthday and Christmas money to an animal shelter in honor of her Aunt Amy — or Mimi, as the kids called her — who passed away unexpectedly due to kidney failure. 'When she first passed, I wanted to donate my money to Animal Welfare League because she liked animals a lot but [my mom] said I couldn't do it. And so then I, I've always wanted to have a lemonade stand, so then I had the idea and we just kind of went with it, and then it got really bigger,' Annalise said. 'It's for our aunt who passed away, and it means a lot to us because we get to have a memory of her,' Jordan Kenyon added. Annalise and her brother, Jordan — with the help of their parents, Melissa and Gregory Kenyon — have hosted Aunt Mimi's Lemonade Stand every year since. This year, the family is growing to include Jack Neapolitan, a retired Boardman police officer — and they're going big. 'I really wanted to build this more than just how it started off, just raising money for the dogs,' Neapolitan said. 'The tremendous assets that are available in this area, and I want to showcase all of it. … Things that you can probably only see on TV, you can see in person.' It costs $1,050 for each vest, adding to the already extensive list of expenses involved with a K-9. But those vests can mean the difference between life and death for the brave, furry officers. 'The dogs and the handlers are the first ones that set off into the dark for the worst of the worst,' Neapolitan said. 'The police, they do a lot for us, and the dogs, they go through a lot of training and I think it would just be nice to have them be kept safe for any tragedies,' Annalise said. They've partnered with the nonprofit Vested Interest in K9s and after hearing Neapolitan's story of his own police dog, the organization donated the first vest in his memory. Another friend of Neapolitan made a significant donation that will cover the cost of another vest. Both of those will go to the Boardman Police Department K-9s, Jack and Mako. 'The departments, they run on tax dollars and no one wants to pay more taxes,' Neapolitan said. 'The departments' budgets are normally very strained, and there's a tremendous amount of cost people probably don't realize goes into just having a K-9 program.' In his talks with Vested Interest, Neapolitan learned that one K-9 officer was shot five times but survived, thanks to the vest, and was able to return to duty after it recovered. Last year, it poured during their outdoor event, severely cutting down their profits. So this year, they're moving to Penguin City Brewing, where they have the option of moving all the planned events inside the brewery should the weather choose to not cooperate. There will be one big bash, held from noon until 4 p.m. on June 21. It will feature demonstrations by area K-9 teams, drone demonstrations, SWAT trucks on display, food trucks and, of course, you can see Annalise and Jordan at the event, making fresh-squeezed lemonade. There is no admission fee. Their ultimate goal is to make $20,000 to protect our area's pawed protectors. Donations can be made virtually via Venmo @Melissa-Kenyon-5 or PayPal MKenyon1982@ Melissa said in the past, they've also received kind letters and donations to their home at 2039 Elm Trace St., Youngstown, Ohio 44515. Gregory says his sister would be proud of what their family is accomplishing in her memory. '[Amy] is definitely watching, definitely proud of the two kids for sure,' Gregory said. Dearborn Desserts: The iconic Cheese Dome
👋 Annalise here, still exploring Dearborn's dessert scene. Dig in: My most recent stop was Lebon Sweets, a second-generation Lebanese bakery and "home of the Cheese Dome." The bakery offers baklava and maamoul cookies, plus kanafa, which is savory melted cheese with a baked crust and sweet syrup. Yes, but: I had my eye on the famous dome ($6.50). It's made with hollow sesame bread, filled with a big slice of kanafa and doused in simple syrup. Those who don't mix sweet and savory may struggle, but I found it to be unique in the best way, with its delicious sesame flavor mixed with soft melty cheese and a pang of sweetness.
