Mark O'Hara looking forward to seeing what Richard King can do at St Mirren
The Buddies captain played alongside the Jamaican international during Saturday's Premier Sports Cup romp at home to Annan Athletic. Mark O'Hara has taken Richard King under his wing — and says he is looking forward to seeing what the Jamaican international can bring to St Mirren. The Buddies skipper has made it his mission to ensure the 23-year-old is settling in well in Paisley. And after a stellar display in the 8-2 Premier Sports Cup win over Annan Athletic, it looks like O'Hara's warm welcome has allowed King to get off to a positive start. King, who arrived from Jamaican Premier League side Caverlier this summer on a two-year deal, has barely had time to take a break from football having played for the Reggae Boyz at the Concacaf Gold Cup in the United States. To help him get a feel for life in Scotland, O'Hara has made sure he feels part of the Saints family as well as showing the defender around on days off. He said: 'With Richard, outside of football, we need to show him about and stuff like that. You can take things like that for granted but he's come to completely new territory here. 'As a team, we like to go out for dinners. I've been out to show him around Glasgow because he's never done that before. We've got a really experienced group and there are a number of guys in there. 'They are made to feel a part of it right when they come in. The differences are funny sometimes and people need to appreciate for guys that it's a real culture shock coming here.' It is a big week for Stephen Robinson's men as progression in the Premier Sports Cup hinges on this Sunday's game against Scott Brown's Ayr United when they arrive at the SMiSA Stadium. Should the Honest Men beat Forfar Athletic tonight — and maintain their 100 per cent Group D record – it will leave Saints needing a win to be in with an opportunity of reaching the knockout stage. Confidence will be high, though, following the demolition of League Two part-timers Annan which featured a hat-trick from Mikael Mandron and a penalty strike by King on his home debut. O'Hara added: 'I'm looking forward to seeing him [King]. We haven't seen much because he's only just finished playing a long season. 'He looks really good on the ball and I'm sure he's going to be exciting for the fans. It's great that we can attract a player like that, a Jamaican international, here. 'They can be made to feel welcome and bed in seamlessly with a lot experience round about them and made to feel welcome — and it's not just me — others help players bed in, too.'

Stephen Robinson salutes Richard King as St Mirren defender marks full debut with a goal
The Northern Irishman was delighted to see how well the Jamaican international handled his first start as Annan Athletic were thrashed 8-2 in the Premier Sports Cup. Stephen Robinson praised new boy Richard King's performance after he 'cruised' through the thumping 8-2 win over Annan Athletic. And the St Mirren boss has already given an insight into how much he rates the Jamaican international as he has pointed him out for penalty duty when needed. King was handed the chance to impress the black-and-white army after the manager gave him his full home debut in this Premier Sports Cup clash. The centre-back, who signed a two-year deal from Jamaican Premier League outfit Cavalier, also got his first goal when he netted from the spot. Robinson will hope that, after a torrid time last season from 12 yards, King could be the answer to his problems in that area of the pitch. He said: 'I thought Richard looked like he cruised through the game. He still has to learn the speed and the physicality sometimes in Scottish football. We've got a Jamaican who only just finished playing two weeks ago so we're still trying to manage Richard through it. 'Everyone's at different levels, I'd say; different levels of form as well so it's important that we get everybody these minutes. Ultimately, we want to be ready for the first league game but also try and qualify for a cup as well. 'The boys were a little bit shocked when I said Kingy was on penalties but I've seen him take them for Jamaica, I've seen him take them for Cavalier, and he's very composed. If he's in the team, he may be able to take it.' It was a goalfest at the SMiSA Stadium on Saturday as the Buddies romped to success over the League Two part-timers to stay top of their section. A hat-trick from Mikael Mandron — his first in Scottish football and the first by a Buddie since Cody Cooke's treble against Dundee six years ago — was the headline display. Killian Phillips' double and goals from Jayden Richardson, Roland Idowu and King ensured a thrilling afternoon for the black-and-white army. It was also Saints' highest goalscoring game in the competition since the turn of the century and sets up a Group D decider against Ayr United next Sunday. And Robbo was pleased with what he saw as he admits his side are getting back to where he wants to be but knows there is still work to do. He said: 'We started incredibly well. Some of our play, some of our goals, some of our movement, some of our passing was fantastic. Then we took a foot off the gas and needed a wee kick in the backside for us to get going again, which we did. 'As I've said, in this competition, everyone expects you to turn up and score six or seven. We did, we scored a lot of goals. But it's never easy. People are organised and I have to give credit to Annan and Willie Gibson [player/manager].' Meanwhile, the Buddies have bolstered their defensive options by securing Tunmise Sobowale on a two-year deal from Sky Bet League Two side Swindon Town. The 26-year-old right wing-back – who can also play right centre-back – is the latest summer signing and Robbo says fans can expect him to be fast as he compares his pace to that of former striker Toyosi Olusanya. He said: 'Sobowale has electric pace, as quick as Toyosi. It gives real competition for Jayden but Jayden's done well since he came in. Wale will give us real energy, real pace down that side. There's a real fight for the position.' The Northern Irishman also touched on the imminent signing of Jalmaro Calvin from Cavalier , and hinted to another which is close. He added: 'If we get the Jalmaro through, which looks positive, it gives us another bit of pace, energy and excitement. Hopefully we're close to another one in the forward areas as well.'

Conor McMenamin says pre-season has been a blast after St Mirren ace missed out last summer
The 29-year-old Northern Irish international is ready to bounce back from a number of injury problems. St Mirren maverick Conor McMenamin has been delighted to join in pre-season after missing out last year. The 29-year-old was recovering from injury last summer ahead of what proved to be a stop-start campaign. However, after returning for the final three home games, the Northern Irish international admits he didn't want the season to end as he was hitting his stride. 'I felt really sharp scoring goals and helping the team,' he explained. 'I just want to get back to that this season. I just want to start really well and get back to scoring goals and helping the team as much as I can. 'I ended the season well and you hang on to those good moments when you've been out injured a long time. 'It makes it worthwhile when you're working with Gerry [Docherty, physio] every day. Long days in the gym.' McMenamin – who is preparing to face Annan Athletic in the Premier Sports Cup on Saturday – has had a niggle and a bug since returning last month but managed to maintain his fitness. He added: 'I really enjoyed pre-season. I missed it last year and I think, if you miss pre-season, you're miles behind everyone. So, it was important to get a full pre-season under my belt. 'I'm hoping to just stay injury-free and help the team as much as I can. If I can get back to the form that I ended the season in, then I'll have a good year.'
