Taking care of seniors as heat wave hits Kansas City area
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Meteorologists are expecting a heat wave in Kansas City this weekend and into next week, just days after heavy rains and flooding hit the area.
Heat Indexes are forecasted to reach up to 110 degrees.

For seniors, temperatures like that can be dangerous. Anne Miller, the senior center director at the Don Bosco Center in Kansas City says they provide as much help as they can.
'We tell people [to use] fans, stay hydrated. A lot of people want to drink soda or coffee or iced tea, and it's like you've got to drink water,' she said. 'Checking on your neighbors is the main thing.'
She recommended buying fans for relatives or elderly neighbors, as she sees many who won't use their air conditioning, or who can't afford to run it.
'This generation often doesn't run the AC like they should,' she said. 'But when we can reassure people there's help to pay that bill, turn it on and run it!'

Miller specifically mentioned two programs that anyone can apply to for help on their electric bill. and the . Both have applications that can be filled out online.
The National Weather Service already issued an extreme heat warning for the Kansas City metro. They recommend wearing lightweight and loose-fitting clothing, keeping outdoor activity limited to the morning and evening, as well as checking up on relatives and neighbors.

Miller said the Don Bosco Center will be open to use as a cooling center.
'Don't feel too proud whether you come to Don Bosco, wherever you are,' she said. 'Accept the help, because that's what people want to do is show their concern and kindness.'
