Cabinet approves construction of 4-lane Paramakudi-Ramanathapuram NH section
New Delhi:The Union cabinet, headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Tuesday approved the construction of a four-lane Paramakudi—Ramanathapuram Section (46.7 km) in Tamil Nadu. The project will be developed in Hybrid Annuity Mode (HAM) and will cost ₹ 1,853 crore in total capital, Union minister of railways, information and broadcasting Ashwini Vaishnaw said during a media briefing. Union minister for information & broadcasting Ashwini Vaishnaw briefs the media on cabinet decisions in Delhi on Tuesday. (PTI) Currently, connectivity between Madurai, Paramakudi, Ramanathapuram, Mandapam, Rameshwaram, and Dhanushkodi is dependent on the existing two-lane National Highway 87 (NH-87) and associated State Highways, which experience significant congestion due to high traffic volumes, especially in densely populated stretches and key towns along the corridor, a government release said. 'To address these challenges, the project will upgrade approximately 46.7 km of NH-87 from Paramakudi to Ramanathapuram to a 4-lane configuration. This will decongest the existing corridor, improve safety, and cater to the mobility needs of rapidly growing towns such as Paramakudi, Sathirakudi, Achundanvayal and Ramanathapuram,' the government release added. The project alignment integrates with five major National Highways (NH-38, NH-85, NH-36, NH-536, and NH-32) and three State Highways (SH-47, SH-29, SH-34), providing seamless connectivity to key economic, social, and logistics nodes across southern Tamil Nadu. Additionally, the upgraded corridor will enhance multi-modal integration by connecting with two major railway stations (Madurai and Rameshwaram), one Airport (Madurai), and two minor ports (Pamban and Rameshwaram), thereby facilitating faster movement of goods and passengers across the region. Upon completion, the Paramakudi-Ramanathapuram section will play a pivotal role in regional economic growth, strengthening connectivity between major religious and economic centers, boosting tourism to Rameshwaram and Dhanushkodi, and opening new avenues for trade and industrial development. The project will also generate approximately 8.4 lakh person-days of direct and 10.45 lakh person-days of indirect employment, and will open new avenues of growth, development and prosperity in surrounding regions, the government release further said.

NHAI debars concessionaire for slope collapse on Kerala highway
New Delhi: In the wake of the collapse of slope protection work on NH-66 in Kerala, the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) on Tuesday debarred the concessionaire and its promoter -- Hyderabad-based M/s Megha Engineering & Infrastructure Ltd -- to participate in future bids. The incident of collapse of slope protection works at Cherkkala in Kasaragod district occurred in Chengala-Neeleshwaram section of NH-66 on June 16 due to improper design, inadequate slope protection works and poor drainage system, NHAI said in a press statement. A showcause notice has also been issued for debarment of one year, along with levying monetary penalty of up to Rs. 0.9 crore, NHAI said. The project is on Hybrid Annuity Mode (HAM), and the concessionaire has to maintain the section for 15 years and reconstruct the slope protection work at their own cost. The Ministry of Road Transport & Highways also said that an expert committee has been constituted with senior scientist of Central Road Research Institute (CRRI), a retired professor of IIT-Palakkad and Geological Survey of India (GSI) to visit the site and review the design and construction of NH-66 in Kerala. The committee will also provide remedial measures for the project. Last month, the NHAI due to the collapse of a NH-66 stretch at Kooriyad in Kerala's Malappuram district suspended the concessionaire of the project, KNR Constructions from participating in future bids. It also suspended the project director and terminated the service of a site engineer involved. An 18-year-old was killed and two were injured when a hillock collapsed at Mattalati near Cherathur in Kerala, which was also a part of the MEIL's segment.

In boost to NE connectivity, 166-km Shillong-Silchar highway gets nod
The Union Cabinet Wednesday approved the construction of a 166.8-km-long, 4-lane, high-speed corridor along National Highway-6 from Mawlyngkhung near Shillong in Meghalaya to Panchgram near Silchar in Assam. According to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways , the project will traverse through the difficult terrain of the Northeast region; it will have a total of 19 major bridges, 153 minor bridges, 326 culverts, 22 underpasses, 26 overpasses and 34 viaducts. It is expected to be constructed in three years. This strategic project will be implemented in Hybrid Annuity Mode (HAM), one of the forms of Public-Private Partnerships (PPP), at a cost of `22,864 crore. Of the total length of the project, 144.8-km lies in Meghalaya and 22 km in Assam. In a post on X, Minister of Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari said once operational, the new alignment will reduce journey time from 8.30 hours to just 5 hours. 'The travel distance between Guwahati and Silchar will shrink to 245 km — an approximate reduction of 25% — while average vehicular speeds are expected to double. Beyond improving access within Assam's Barak Valley, the corridor will dramatically bolster connectivity between the mainland and the northeastern states of Meghalaya, Tripura, Mizoram, and Manipur. The project is poised to become the shortest and fastest freight route for trucks and heavy vehicles bound for Silchar and further east,' Gadkari posted. Silchar is the entry point for connecting Mizoram, Tripura and Manipur as well as Assam's Barak Valley region. Officials said after the completion of the project, NH-6 will become a major connectivity link for entire Northeast. Currently, Silchar is connected by NH-27, which runs from Silchar to Porbandar in Gujarat and covers seven states from east to west.
