Missiles or whisky: What's the best way to fight a war?

Amidst the Israel-Iran conflict, veiled threats and strategic maneuvers replaced outright war. Despite roaring rhetoric from the US, Israel, and Iran, actions were tempered, with Iran even providing advance notice of an attack. This unusual approach to conflict raises questions about the true intentions and capabilities of the involved parties, leaving the region in a precarious state of calm. Tired of too many ads? Quite Machiavellian, but it was difficult to comprehend that during the Israel-Iran conflict who was a lion and who a fox at a particular moment. Nonetheless, one tried to outfox the other through various machinations. Although thundering was common, it was cloaked in mystery, similar to Panchatantra's blue-dyed 'Midnight Hammer', both 'Rising Lion' and 'True Promise 3' got a safe exit option. But before exercising it, all of them roared: The US President claimed Iran's nuclear capabilities have been 'totally obliterated'; Bibi said 'righteous might of the United States will change history'; and Iran promised massive retaliation. Iran returned fire. Along came a twist. Before striking the US base, Iran informed Qatar about the Trump thanked Iran 'for giving us early notice'. But Iran boasted of 'Annunciation of Victory' through 'devastating and powerful missile' attacks on the US base. What a beautiful way to fight an enemy! Just imagine a world where combatants reveal everything: 'Beware, Iam coming to attack you at such and such hour. Save yourself as I will use so and so arms. Must keep your defences ready.' In such a scenario, there will at best be a light and sound show but no loss of life or property. No doubt, West Asian players have pressed the pause button, but they are still sitting on a powder keg. An oasis of calm is missing. Also, there is no clarity over the hammering, rising or ducking lion and delivery of promise or annunciation. The actors might learn a bit from the Whisky War where hiccups were the only setbacks. Yes, it was as real as the water of life itself. And who knows it better than the Canadians and the Danes.

Trump Slams Israel and Iran for Ceasefire Breach, Warns of Escalation

President Donald Trump lashed out at Israel and Iran on Tuesday, accusing both sides of undermining a fragile ceasefire and warning their actions risk reigniting conflict. "These guys have to calm down. It's ridiculous," Trump said before departing for the NATO summit in The Hague. He criticized Israel for immediately launching airstrikes after the ceasefire deal and condemned Iran for a strong retaliatory response. "Israel dropped a load of bombs the likes of which I've never seen before... I'm not happy with Israel. I'm not happy with Iran either," Trump added, describing both countries as locked in blind aggression. Trump confirmed both sides violated the truce announced late Monday. "You have 12 hours; you don't go out in the first hour and just drop everything," he said. The President's frustration was evident as he declared, "They don't know what the f*** they're doing. Do you understand that?" Earlier, Trump issued a direct warning to Israel via Truth Social, saying, "Israel, do not drop those bombs. If you do, it is a major violation. Bring your pilots home, now!" His remarks came as reports emerged of Iran firing six missiles toward American bases in Iraq and Qatar on Monday night. Iran's missile barrage, dubbed "Annunciation of Victory," reportedly caused no significant damage as U.S. Patriot systems intercepted them. Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared "mission accomplished," stating that Israel achieved full air dominance and neutralized several Iranian military targets. Netanyahu's statement also highlighted Israel's destruction of critical Iranian regime facilities and claimed a major blow was dealt to Iran's nuclear capabilities. He thanked Trump and the U.S. for supporting Israel's defense and for playing a role in addressing the nuclear threat. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei responded, claiming the strikes on U.S. bases were lawful self-defense under Article 51 of the UN Charter. He said Iran acted after "criminal aggression" by the U.S. and Israel and affirmed Iran's close ties with Qatar remained unaffected by the attack. Baghaei emphasized that Iran's strike on the Al-Udeid base in Qatar was a response to U.S. violations of its sovereignty. He asserted that the action had no bearing on Iran-Qatar relations, which he described as "excellent and deeply rooted," signaling Tehran's intention to isolate its actions from regional diplomacy.

These guys gotta calm down: Trump furious with Israel and Iran for violating ceasefire

Washington: US President Donald Trump on Tuesday issued a stern warning to both Israel and Iran, accusing them of actions which could shatter a hard-won truce. "These guys gotta calm down. It's ridiculous. I didn't like plenty of things that I saw yesterday. I didn't like the fact that Israel unloaded right after we made the deal ... and I didn't like the fact that the retaliation was very strong," Trump told reporters in Washington before leaving for the NATO summit in The Hague. Trump mentioned that both countries "violated" the ceasefire that was announced late Monday. "Israel, as soon as we made the deal, they came out and they dropped a load of bombs the likes of which I've never seen before... The biggest load that we've seen, I'm not happy with Israel. When I say now you have 12 hours, you don't go out in the first hour, just drop everything you have on them. So, I'm not happy with him. I'm not happy with Iran either," said the US President. "We basically have two countries that have been fighting so long and so hard that they don't know what the f*** they're doing. Do you understand that," he added. Earlier, Trump sounded a warning to Israel against launching another attack on Iran. "Israel Do not drop those bombs. If you do it is a major violation. Bring your pilots home, now!" Trump wrote on Truth Social. Iran reportedly fired six missiles towards American military bases in Iraq and Qatar on Monday night, escalating the ongoing conflict in the region. As per media reports, the operation was named "Annunciation of Victory". However, there were reportedly no major impacts of the missile attack on the US bases in Qatar as American Patriot missile defence systems intercepted Iranian missiles. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Tuesday announced that the Israeli defence forces have achieved "all of the objectives of Operation Rising Lion, and much more", thus agreeing to US President Donald Trump's proposal for a bilateral ceasefire. "Israel has removed from over it a double existential threat – on both the nuclear issue and regarding ballistic missiles. The IDF also achieved complete air superiority in the skies over Tehran, struck a severe blow to the military leadership and destroyed dozens of Iran's main regime targets," read a statement issued by Netanyahu's office. "In the last several days, the IDF has also severely struck regime targets in the heart of Tehran, eliminated hundreds of militants from the Basij, the terrorist regime's instrument of repression, and eliminated an additional senior nuclear scientist. Israel thanks President Trump and the US for their defensive support and for their participation in removing the Iranian nuclear threat," it mentioned further. However, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei said Tuesday afternoon that the military action was in response to US and Israeli "criminal aggressions" and will not affect the "deeply rooted" relationships. "Iran's military strikes on American military base 'Al-Udeid' was in exercise of our self-defence under Article 51 of the UN Charter in response to the United States' unprovoked aggression against Iran's territorial integrity and national sovereignty that took place on 22 June 2025. This act of self-defence had nothing to do with our friendly neighbour Qatar as we enjoy excellent and deeply rooted relationships," Baghaei posted on X.

King Mohammed VI voices solidarity with Qatar in call to Emir following Iranian attack

King Mohammed VI spoke by phone on Monday evening with the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, following Iran's missile strike on the Al-Udeid Air Base. According to a statement from the Amiri Diwan, the Moroccan monarch expressed Morocco's full solidarity with Qatar and strongly condemned the Iranian attack, describing it as «a blatant violation of Qatari sovereignty and airspace, as well as international law and the United Nations Charter». The King firmly rejected any aggression that threatens Qatar's security and stability, calling on the Emir to show restraint and prioritize diplomatic solutions to de-escalate the situation. For his part, the Emir expressed his deep appreciation for the King's «sincere fraternal sentiments and valuable solidarity with the State of Qatar and its people». Earlier on Monday, Iran launched an attack on the U.S. Al-Udeid Air Base in Qatar in an operation dubbed «Annunciation of Victory», in retaliation for American strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities. The incident marks a sharp escalation in regional tensions following missile exchanges between Israel and Iran. Qatar temporarily closed its airspace on Monday due to heightened security concerns, with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stating the move was intended to «ensure the safety of residents and visitors». Later that same day, Qatari authorities announced the resumption of air traffic and confirmed that conditions had returned to normal. Morocco's Ministry of Foreign Affairs also issued a statement Monday, strongly condemning the Iranian attack and expressing full solidarity with Qatar against any threats to its security and the safety of its people.

Qatar Intercepts Iranian Missile Strike on U.S. Base Amid Escalating Tensions

Qatar's air defense systems successfully intercepted a barrage of Iranian missiles targeting the Al Udeid Air Base, the largest U.S. military installation in the Middle East, late Monday evening. The strike was part of Iran's retaliatory campaign—dubbed 'Annunciation of Victory'—following U.S. and Israeli attacks on Iranian nuclear facilities over the weekend. Explosions were heard across Doha, prompting Qatar to temporarily close its airspace and issue shelter-in-place advisories. Despite the intensity of the attack, no casualties were reported, and Qatari authorities condemned the strike as a 'flagrant violation' of their sovereignty. Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps claimed responsibility, stating the strike was a 'mighty and successful response' to what it called American aggression. The U.S. Department of Defense confirmed the attempted strike and praised Qatar's swift defensive response. The incident marks a dangerous escalation in the region, with U.S. forces across the Gulf now on high alert. Qatar has reserved the right to respond in accordance with international law, while global leaders urge restraint to avoid a broader conflict.
