Star Trek: Strange New Worlds boldly finding out if "puppet episode" still feels like a creative gimmick

Hey, friends. Can you join us over here for a second, away from the hubbub? We just wanted to touch base real fast, check in, and ask the question that's the elephant in the room this afternoon: Are we all kind of over seeing TV characters getting turned into puppets? Or is it just us? This question brought to you by the San Diego Comic-Con panel for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, which opened with a clip showcasing that Anson Mount's Captain Pike is going to get turned into a puppet for an episode of the show's (still far-off) fourth season. And, yup: That's a puppet that looks kind of like Mount, sitting in a Star Trek chair, saying Captain Pike stuff. Neat! (Feel free to accuse us of being joyless cynics here—after all, the show did bring in the Jim Henson Creature Shop to work on the episode, and the puppet certainly looks good—but this is the kind of trick that feels like it lost its impact several 'recognizable characters as puppets!' ago. Angel's 'Smile Time' is the obvious touchpoint, of course, but Doom Patrol, 30 Rock, Community, and Legends Of Tomorrow all also screwed around with this concept—and those are just the ones we can think of off the tops of our heads. Also, unlike a musical episode—which has the dual pleasures of hearing the cast sing, and seeing how the show can explore some of its themes through an alternative storytelling medium, the joke of a puppet bit usually starts and stops with 'Hey, puppets!' Anyway, this has been our joyless discourse on the puppet episode as a concept.) It's not like Strange New Worlds hasn't been steering into this kind of thing pretty hard already, having done musical episodes, hybrid-animation stuff, and, just recently, a zombie movie riff. The puppet adventures won't be coming until the show's fourth season (of what'll ultimately be five), but fans at Comic-Con still got their fill of gimmick, as they were treated to a full showing of an upcoming episode from the currently running third season that hasn't come out yet, featuring a holodeck murder mystery the crew has to solve. Photo: Miller Mobley/Paramount+ The SDCC panel also served as a showcase for new series Star Trek: Starfleet Academy; Paramount+ released preview images for the upcoming series earlier this week, including a shot of Paul Giamatti doing his favorite thing in the world and getting completely slathered in prosthetics. Are you caught up on the previous season? Here's what to know about the two-episode Strange New Worlds Season 3 premiere, including release date, streaming time, and what to expect from these two very different episodes. No spoilers ahead. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3 Premiere Date Strange New Worlds Season 3 hits Paramount+ on Thursday, July 17, 2025. This is two years after the Season 2 premiere, which debuted back in June Time Does the Strange New Worlds Season 3 Premiere Start Streaming? So, if you're up late on Wednesday night, you can watch the two-episode premiere. What is the Plot of the Premiere of Strange New Worlds Season 3? The premiere of Strange New Worlds Season 3 will feature two back-to-back episodes, both with very different vibes. The first episode is called "Hegemony Part II," and is the conclusion of the cliffhanger of Season 2. At the end of that season, the USS Enterprise had a chunk of the crew kidnapped by the Gorn, while Captain Pike (Anson Mount) was given orders to retreat. So, "Hegemony Part II" is all about resolving that very specific mess and getting the band back together. Meanwhile, the second episode is called "Wedding Bell Blues," and from the looks of this trailer, this seems to be a rom-com style episode with a sci-fi twist! This is a defining feature of Strange New Worlds as a whole; one episode can be very serious and full of action, while the next can be light, funny, and deeply strange. Essentially, the message of this show is this: come for the sci-fi adventure, stay for the weird Paramount+ Sci-Fi Show Drops a Two-Episode Season Premiere Sooner Than You Think first appeared on Men's Journal on Jul 15, 2025 Solve the daily Crossword

'Strange New Worlds' Season 3, Episode 3 Streams Sooner Than You Think

After the two-episode Season 3 premiere last week, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds isn't slowing down at all. In fact, the next episode of Season 3, "Shuttle to Kenfori," is coming at you at warp speed. Here's what to know about when exactly you can stream the new episode, what the episode is about, and why you might want to rewatch one very specific episode in Season 2 before watching this new one. No spoilers ahead. Strange New Worlds Season 3, Episode 3 Release Date The third episode of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3, "Shuttle to Kenfori," will hit Paramount+ on Thursday, July 24. The reason this is the third episode overall this season is that last week, SNW Season 3 dropped Episodes 1 and 2 at the same New Worlds Season 3, Episode 3 Streaming Time Strange New Worlds, like other Paramount+ shows, drops new episodes at 12:00 a.m. Pacific Time, which is 3:00 a.m. Eastern Time. So, very early on Thursday morning, or late on Wednesday night, depending on how you look at it. What is the Plot of Strange New Worlds Season 3, Episode 3? "Shuttle to Kenfori" will feature Captain Pike (Anson Mount) and Dr. M'Benga (Babs Olusanmokun) on a covert mission that will result in some tangos with the Klingons. While getting into the specifics of their mission would be a spoiler, viewers might want to refresh themselves with M'Benga's backstory from Season 2. In Season 2, Episode 8, "Under the Cloak of War," we learned the M'Benga had witnessed war crimes from one specific Klingon a few years back, and in the present, murdered that Klingon out of revenge. These details matter big time in "Shuttle to Kenfori." You don't absolutely need to watch "Under the Cloak of War" to understand "Shuttle to Kenfori," but it will probably enrich your viewing if you do. Plus, Babs Olusanmokun is a dynamic and exciting actor in both the Season 2 episode and the new Season 3 episode. Remember when he fought Timothée Chalamet in Dune? Some of that style of sci-fi action is on display in these M'Benga episodes of Strange New Worlds, proving that both the character and Olusanmokun are total badasses.'Strange New Worlds' Season 3, Episode 3 Streams Sooner Than You Think first appeared on Men's Journal on Jul 22, 2025 Solve the daily Crossword

'Strange New Worlds' Season 3, Episode 1 Ending Sets Up a Classic 'Star Trek' Smackdown

After two years, Strange New Worlds Season 3 has resolved its big, bad 2023 cliffhanger. In the first episode of the new season, "Hegemony Part II," Captain Pike (Anson Mount) and the crew of the USS Enterprise hatch a plan to make the killer lizard aliens, the Gorn, go away. But, as the episode makes clear, the Gorn aren't totally defeated, just sidelined. And with one specific line, Strange New Worlds is sneakily setting the table for a classic 1967 Star Trek episode that, technically, takes place in this show's future. Spoilers ahead. Strange New Worlds Season 3, Episode 1 Ending, Explained Because the Gorn communicate through light, Uhura (Celia Rose Gooding) and Number One (Rebecca Romijn) figure out that large solar flares can tell all of the Gorn to either wake up and start hunting or, crucially, to go to sleep. The fix? If Scotty (Martin Quinn) can make the Enterprise appear like an actual sun, the Gorn's sleep cycle will be triggered. In classic Trek style, Scotty gives it all he's got, and it works, just barely. The Gorn invasion of the Federation is halted, and Captain Pike says, "I can't help but wonder if we didn't just create a problem for someone else to solve later.' But what did he mean by that? Strange New Worlds Just Set Up "Arena" At this point, Strange New Worlds Season 3 is taking place roughly in the year 2259. This puts it about six years, give or take, before the events of Star Trek: The Original Series. Yes, the technology looks way better in SNW than it did in the classic show, but if you squint a little, it works. And, if you don't worry too much about how fierce the Gorn look in this show, then you'll probably be able to reconcile that idea with the green-rubber Gorn from the 1967 episode "Arena." In that episode, Captain Kirk (William Shatner) fought a Gorn by himself, in a kind of test to prove whether or not humans were both resourceful, but also kind. In terms of the timeline, Captain Kirk is Captain Pike's successor, and in Strange New Worlds, is played by Paul Wesley, who is not yet a Starfleet captain. So, even though Pike doesn't know it yet, the problem that someone has to solve later will be solved by James T. Kirk in "Arena." Strange New Worlds debuted with two new episodes in Season 3. There will be eight more after that, each dropping weekly on Thursdays. But, if you want a sequel to Season 3, Episode 1, then all you have to do is watch Star Trek: The Original Series, Season 1, Episode 19, "Arena" and get ready to watch Captain Kirk wrestle in the sand with an incredible lizard man.'Strange New Worlds' Season 3, Episode 1 Ending Sets Up a Classic 'Star Trek' Smackdown first appeared on Men's Journal on Jul 17, 2025

Yep, a Muppet Version of 'Star Trek' Is Coming in 2026

As revealed at San Diego Comic-Con 2025, the next surprising move for the hit series Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will be an episode done entirely in the style of Jim Henson's Muppets. Yes, you didn't misread that. This isn't an AI-generated thing, nor is it fan-created. As confirmed by a new teaser at Comic-Con, Strange New Worlds Season 4 will feature an all-puppet episode of the popular Star Trek spinoff. In an official press release, Paramount revealed that "Season 4 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will feature a puppet-themed episode, featuring crew members as puppets created by the iconic Jim Henson's Creature Shop." The trailer showed a puppet version of Captain Pike, as voiced by Anson Mount, wondering if the rest of the crew had "gone to Season 4" without him. Star Trek Puppet Episode Trailer The puppet episode will be directed by Jordan Canning, who previously worked on Fraggle Rock: Back to the Rock. This puppet-themed Star Trek installment is still a long way off, though. Strange New Worlds Season 3 is currently airing, and this puppet Trek will happen in Season 4, set to debut sometime in 2026. Before that, though, the next big Star Trek series will be Starfleet Academy, a new live-action series starring Holly Hunter and featuring none other than Paul Giamatti as the villain. Star Trek Streaming Guide All existing Star Trek shows, with the exception of the animated series Star Trek: Prodigy, all stream on Paramount+. (Prodigy streams on Netflix.) This means that if you wanted to catch Strange New Worlds, both now and in 2026, or Starfleet Academy, you'll need Paramount+.
