Liam Cahill has done superbly -- but it may not matter
Match of the day Cork v Tipperary Croke Park, today 3.30 pm (RTÉ/BBC) Cork's fanatical fans are descending on Croke Park in their droves, expecting a coronation this evening. There's a reason why there was such a ticket frenzy on Leeside, and it's not because they expect the county's longest gap between senior All-Irelands to continue – there is a sense of destiny in Cork that the famine is finally about to end. Twenty years is a lifetime in the history of Cork hurling, and Rob Downey has the chance to be the first senior captain since Seán Óg Ó hAilpín to lift the Liam MacCarthy Cup. A first final between this Munster pairing adds a real novelty to the meeting. Anthony Daly has spoken about how hard it was mentally for Clare to beat Tipperary twice in the same Championship when they became the first teams to meet up again in an All-Ireland final in the very first year of the backdoor qualifier system in 1997. RTÉ analyst Anthony Daly. Tipperary showed against Kilkenny that there are goals in Liam Cahill's team – and they will need them against a Cork side who hit seven against Dublin, and have the most potent inside line in hurling with Brian Hayes – frontrunner for Hurler of the Year – goal king Alan Connolly and the game's all-time scorer in Patrick Horgan. Tipp match up well in the individual contests at the back, with Robert Doyle and Eoghan Connolly in All-Star form, but they will need to get a handle on the midfield, where Tim O'Mahony has been outstanding for Cork and could lay the foundations for runaway dominance if unchecked. Cahill has done a superb job in redesigning his team and adding pace and adaptability, but Cork have the experience of last year's final to call on to ensure Horgan and this next generation of players finally get their hands on the Liam MacCarthy Cup.

Christy O'Connor: Ryan or Cahill can join Kiely in double territory
On the Irish Examiner Christmas hurling podcast last December, George Hamilton assumed the role as quizmaster, firing questions at Anthony Daly, Mark Landers and TJ Ryan to test their insight and knowledge of the 2024 hurling season, and the multitude of characters associated with such a memorable championship. One of the questions posed was to name the managers in the 2024 championship who had also guided their county to All-Ireland U20 titles? It was both an easy and hard question as the list stretched to four men. Who were they? Landers and Ryan eventually came up with the answers: Pat Ryan, Liam Cahill, Derek Lyng and John Kiely.
