Trbojevic to stay at centre with knee all clear
Tom Trbojevic has revealed he expects to see out the season at centre, while downplaying knee concerns ahead of Manly's clash with the Sydney Roosters. One month into the fullback's shift out of the No.1 jersey, Manly suffered their first loss with Trbojevic in the centres in Sunday's 42-4 defeat to Canterbury. That has left the Sea Eagles likely needing four wins from six games, with crucial matches against fellow finals hopefuls the Roosters on Saturday night at Brookvale. Manly's defeat also prompted calls for Trbojevic to return to No.1, after his shift was initially considered a short-term sugar fix to help him regain confidence. Trbojevic has long maintained his preferred position is fullback, where he won the 2021 Dally M Medal and has been one of Manly's best players for the past decade. But the 28-year-old said he now expected to remain on the right edge for the rest of the year after being moved by coach Anthony Seibold. "My indication is that I will stay there," Trbojevic said. "I've moved there, so my focus is on being there and being the best version of myself there. "It's like anything. If you go move to do a different role in a job thinking you're not going to be there fulltime ... you're not going to perform the job well. "That's just my focus, I have to do it the best I can, that's all I can focus on." Since moving to centre against Wests Tigers last month, Trbojevic has been directly involved in nine of Manly's 15 tries, six of those when he roamed to the left, creating an extra number on that side. Lehi Hopoate, however, has not had as much impact at fullback, while Trbojevic's right side has been found out in defence at times. "I still feel like I have been able to do what I do best and that is move around the field and play footy," Trbojevic said. "It obviously wasn't our best performance on the weekend, mine included. I just have to reflect on that and get better and move forward. But feeling good." Trbojevic and his brothers Ben and Jake spent Tuesday visiting their old Mona Vale Public School, swamped by students ahead of NSW public education week. The trio inspected the school's goalposts that were built by their father, while Jake was labelled a teacher's pet, Ben the troublemaker and Tom the maths whiz. Tom and Jake were also quizzed about their contracts, adamant it was the furthest thing from their minds this late in the season as the pair's management close in on extensions for beyond next year. Tom also declared his right knee needed no serious examination, after he briefly stayed down following an awkward tackle late in Sunday's loss. "It was a bit ginger but I got up and felt all right which is good," Trbojevic said. "It feels good now and I was able to play the rest of the game."

Manly lose backrower Haumole Olakau'atu for the rest of the season following shoulder injury
Manly's finals hopes have taken a hit as superstar second-rower Haumole Olakau'atu dislocated his right shoulder again in a dismal 42-4 loss to Canterbury at the Sydney Football Stadium. Olakau'atu was in agony after an attempted tackle on Viliame Kikau early in Sunday's second half, forced off the field in his first game since dislocating the same shoulder six weeks ago. With Taniela Paseka still injured, Olakau'atu is unquestionably Manly's most important forward but is no certainty to play again this year as the ninth-placed Sea Eagles fight for a top-eight spot. Manly coach Anthony Seibold said the barnstorming backrower will not play again this season. "I don't think so. Our medical staff said to Haumole and myself there's a 90 per cent risk of doing the injury again," Seibold said. "We wanted to take that risk. He just got his shoulder in an awkward position. We won't see him again this year. "It was always a calculated risk. For a player of his quality and standing in our team, we wanted to take that risk." Manly can take comfort from having won all three games during Olakau'atu's first injury lay-off, but that resilience deserted them as Canterbury ran in five unanswered tries after the break. Samuel Hughes' second try in the final five minutes left the match as the Sea Eagles' biggest-ever loss to Canterbury. The second-half blitz moved the Bulldogs into second spot on the NRL ladder and helped them atone for the heartbreaking loss to Manly in last year's elimination final. This year's Bulldogs are rightly aiming for a finals campaign more similar to the 1995 season, with the club commemorating the 30th anniversary of that year's premiership triumph on Sunday. This was Canterbury's most dominant performance since Lachlan Galvin's mid-season arrival and the young halfback struck better chemistry with five-eighth Matt Burton than ever before. After going into the break up by eight but still not comfortable, the Bulldogs scored the go-ahead try in the second half on the back of a Burton line break. The five-eighth scurried inside on a 30-metre tear and right winger Jacob Kiraz scored his second four-pointer on the next tackle to confirm a three-score lead. The Bulldogs went the length of the field in their next set and Bronson Xerri reached out under the posts to put his side on course for victory. Late in the first half, Xerri had sprawled on the turf in pain after being struck in the face by Kikau's boots as his teammate flew to make a tackle. Manly scored their lone try through Jason Saab on the Bulldogs' makeshift left edge shortly thereafter. But Xerri returned in style after the break and had a second try late in the final 15 minutes, when the Bulldogs went into party mode. Earlier, Canterbury had their first try following a regulation Burton bomb, spilt by 100-gamer Saab into the hands of a flying Hughes. As Burton took the lead on kicking, Galvin flaunted his prized running game all day and triggered the shift that led to the Bulldogs' second four-pointer. Galvin drew Ben Trbojevic in with a beautiful late ball, with a superb Connor Tracey (304 run metres) and Stephen Crichton also nailing their timing to put Kiraz over. Earlier, Canberra surged home in the second half to down Newcastle 44-18 and record their ninth straight win to stay top of the ladder. With six rounds left before the finals, the Raiders don't have to play any current top four opponents and have a bye in hand. If the Green Machine are able to win the minor premiership, it would be their first since 1990, when coach Ricky Stuart was halfback. Trbojevic takes centre stage to bag double for Manly
Tom Trbojevic has shown signs of returning to his best, firing the Sea Eagles back into the NRL's top eight with a 30-12 win over South Sydney. Two games into his shift from fullback to centre, Trbojevic scored a double at Brookvale Oval on Sunday and set up another as Manly ran to a 24-0 lead. The win made it two straight for Manly after what had loomed as a crucial fortnight for coach Anthony Seibold, and consigned the Rabbitohs to six straight losses. TURBO 🚀 — NRL (@NRL) July 6, 2025 The main concern for South Sydney will be Brandon Smith, after he limped from the field with ankle injury late in his return game from a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). Playing his first game in nine months and featuring for Souths for the first time, Smith started and played two short stints before being hurt in a tackle. Smith's injury came on the same leg he ruptured his ACL last August, and adds to what has been a wretched few years of injuries for the Rabbitohs. As undermanned as the Rabbitohs may be, this was still a crucial win for Manly given the noise around Sydney's northern beaches a fortnight ago. Seibold said last week that he would reconsider Trbojevic's centre move after the Souths match, wanting his most dangerous man to get his confidence back. Trbojevic appears to have at least done that, running with power again in what was easily his best match since March. He regularly played a roaming role in attack, popping up on the left of the field to give Manly an extra number on that side of the field in attack. Even at 36, DCE still has it! 👏Sportsbet #TryJuly — NRL (@NRL) July 6, 2025 The Sea Eagles' first try came in that fashion, with Trbojevic linking up with new No.1 Lehi Hopoate on the left side of the field to send Reuben Garrick over. Trbojevic scored Manly's next himself when he again went in field searching for the ball, and created pressure by chasing through on a Daly Cherry-Evans kick. On the next play he made use of the broken defensive line and stepped through two to score. It was Trbojevic's second try after the break that showed the most promise, when he again took a ball on the left, charged infield and beat three to score. Trbojevic has starred as a roaming centre at representative level, but questions linger over defensive cohesion with two Souths tries coming late down his edge. The Sea Eagles have the bye next week before a difficult month against three of the NRL's top four, and they desperately need Trbojevic firing if they are to play finals. Manly hope to have Haumole Olakau'atu back as soon as after that bye, after a middle led by Matt Lodge able to overturn Souths' better early ball on Sunday. Garrick also scored a double in the win, while fellow winger Jason Saab appeared to suffer a lower-leg injury late.

Manly claim pressure-easing win over toothless Tigers
Manly's backline overhaul has netted Anthony Seibiold a much-needed win, doing enough to beat Wests Tigers 28-10. After a fortnight of spotlight on Seibold's job and the Sea Eagles' form, Manly were far from their best at Brookvale Oval but still put themselves back in the top eight. Their plan to give Tom Trbojevic some confidence playing at centre showed some signs of working, with the regular No.1 having a role in two tries. Some slick passing as Garrick goes over! 🦅#NRLManlyTigers — NRL (@NRL) June 27, 2025 But his replacement at fullback Lehi Hopoate had one of his toughest outings of the season, putting down two high balls and getting beaten to another. Still, it was enough for the Sea Eagles to consign the Tigers to their sixth straight loss, who desperately missed Jarome Luai in attack after he was ruled out with a boil. Adding to the Tigers' concerns was a concussion for Api Koroisau, that has the potential to stifle any chance of Tallyn Da Silva leaving before the June 30 deadline. After back-to-back losses to Newcastle and Gold Coast before last week's bye, Manly just needed a win no matter how ugly it was. And for large periods of the first half on Friday night, it was anything but pretty for both teams through a scoreless opening 39 minutes. Trbojevic was whacked by Jeral Skelton the only time he received it in a good area during that time, with Manly regularly going short rather than out the back. But when the Sea Eagles finally utilised the fullback-turned-centre again, the game started to turn. The only first-half try came through the 28-year-old, when Trbojevic got the ball 10 metres out and put Jason Saab over to score. Trbojevic was at it again to start the second half, going from right centre to the left side of the field to act as second receiver. That gave the Sea Eagles an extra number, with Trbojevic holding the ball up for Lehi Hopoate to send Reuben Garrick over with a cut-out ball. Another Manly try came down that side after Trbojevic had again created numbers early in the set, before Luke Brooks and Daly Cherry-Evans helped Tolu Koula score. Second-rowers Corey Waddell and Ben Trbojevic also went over in the second half, one from a Cherry-Evans short ball and another from the halfback's kick. There were still some questions over Tom Trbojevic's defence at centre, with the visitors' first try coming when Adam Douiehi put Alex Seyfarth past him and into a gaping hole. While the Tigers are clearly an improved outfit, they have now lost six in a row and will likely face the Sydney Roosters next week without Koroisau and Luai. Da Silva scored late out of dummy-half but looks likely to leave the club by year's end, while Latu Fainu lacked spark without Luai next to him.
