Bucs Rumor Suggests New Contract for All-Pro Antoine Winfield

Bucs Rumor Suggests New Contract for All-Pro Antoine Winfield originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Despite quarterback and head coach changes over the last few years, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have maintained their status as a playoff contender. Advertisement Their young talent on both sides of the field is a big reason for that. One of their brightest stars is safety Antoine Winfield Jr. The former All-Pro has built a reputation as one of the best safeties in the game today. Winfield may be coming off a down season, but he wants to bounce back significantly. Tampa Bay needs to be careful with Winfield, though. The Minnesota product is 26 years old and under team control for the next two seasons. But... ESPN has called the numbers behind those final two years one of the most "player-friendly" for a safety in the league. "Winfield is the league's second-highest paid safety by average annual salary, just slightly behind [Kerby] Joseph. But the rest of the deal is great for Winfield in comparison," Dan Graziano wrote. "Winfield got a $20 million roster bonus in 2024 and fully guaranteed salaries of $4 million in 2024 and $21 million in 2025. Advertisement "He's sure to make $45 million over the first two years of the deal and would make $64.5 million over the first three if he stays in Tampa Bay. It's strong money, given the rest of the safety market." Let's call this a rumor for now. But … Tampa Bay will likely seek to restructure Winfield's contract following the 2025 season. His $27 million cap hit, scheduled for both 2026 and 2027, will make the situation difficult. If they can get the kind of All-Pro play they used to get earlier in his career, the cap hits won't be a hindrance. Anything less, though and the Buccaneers will be stuck between a rock and a hard place with Winfield. Buccaneers' Safety's Contract Ranked Most 'Player-Friendly' Deal

Buccaneers' Safety's Contract Ranked Most 'Player-Friendly' Deal originally appeared on Athlon Sports. After an incredible 2023 that earned him a First-Team All-Pro nod and a sixth-place finish in Defensive Player of the Year honors, Tampa Bay Buccaneers safety Antoine Winfield Jr. suffered a setback in 2024, mainly due to injuries. Advertisement The former second-round pick in 2020 earned a record four-year, $84.1 million deal after posting a career-high 122 total tackles with 76 solo and six for loss, while adding eight QB hits, a league-high six forced fumbles and six sacks in 2023. Even while dealing with calf and knee injuries last season, and appearing in just nine games, Winfield still managed 60 tackles with 34 solo and four QB hits to go along with two sacks. But it's the contract that's grabbed the attention of ESPN's Dan Graziano. Graziano named Winfield's contract the most "player-friendly" deal for any safety in the league. It's strong money, given the rest of the safety market." Winfield Jr. and the Buccaneers hope to rebound from a disappointing playoff performance last season when they were ousted by the visiting Washington Commanders in the Wild Card round. A healthy Winfield Jr. will go a long way to accomplish that. One Vikings defender makes PFF's All-Time team from past 25 years

One of the more underrated Minnesota Vikings of the past 25 years is receiving some love from Pro Football Focus for his exceptional play. Antoine Winfield, who played cornerback for the Vikings from 2004-12, was named to the All-PFF team, which is celebrating the best players in the league since 2000. His 94.5 career PFF grade ranked second among all cornerbacks. Other corners included on the list were Richard Sherman (94.8) and Hall of Famer Darrelle Revis (94.4). Advertisement PFF takes note of his prowess in both the run and pass game. Despite standing 5-foot-9 and weighing 180 pounds, Winfield wasn't afraid to throw his body around to terrorize running backs in the backfield. Says PFF: Winfield's NFL career began in 1999, though even his seven remaining seasons in the PFF era yielded one of the best career marks of all time. He was among the 10 highest-graded players for his position in five out of seven years, and the top-graded player at his position three times between 2006 and when he retired in 2012. While Winfield owns a top-10 PFF coverage grade all time (92.3), where he's unique on this list of cornerbacks is that he also owns the best PFF run-defense grade (94.7) out of 355 qualifiers at the position since 2006. Winfield's 107 run defense stops are tied for the second most of all time among cornerbacks, while his 2.47-yard average depth of tackle against the run ranks as the best mark among 137 qualifiers since 2006. Although the defensive line gets most of the credit for the Vikings' having the league's best run defense every season from 2006-08, Winfield also played a role in that. He had several games where he single-handedly took over, including wins over the Carolina Panthers and New Orleans Saints in 2008. Despite intercepting 27 passes, recovering 11 fumbles, and registering 7.5 sacks, Winfield only made three Pro Bowls during his 14-year career. He may have gotten more notoriety now with the ever-growing popularity of PFF. But it's good to see one of the most dependable Vikings of the past get the recognition he deserves for his stellar play.
