Senators sign forwards Lars Eller, Nick Cousins to one-year contracts
Toronto Maple Leafs goaltender Anthony Stolarz (41) pokes the puck off the stick of Ottawa Senators' Nick Cousins (21) during second period NHL playoff action in Ottawa, on Thursday, April 24, 2025. THE CANADIAN PRESS/Justin Tang The Ottawa Senators signed forwards Lars Eller and Nick Cousins to one-year contracts on the opening day of NHL free agency Tuesday. Eller joins the Senators on a US$1.25-million deal after producing six goals and nine assists in 63 games with the Washington Capitals last season. The 36-year-old centre from Denmark will play for his sixth franchise after previous stints in St. Louis, Montreal, Colorado and Pittsburgh. Cousins re-signed on a $825,000 contract after recording 15 points (six goals, nine assists) in 50 regular-season games for Ottawa in 2024-25. He also suited up in five of six games during the team's first-round appearance against the Toronto Maple Leafs. The 31-year-old had signed a one-year, $800,000 deal to join the Senators last summer after winning the Stanley Cup with the Florida Panthers in 2023-24. Cousins was a third-round pick (68th overall) in the 2011 NHL Draft by the Philadelphia Flyers. The five-foot-11, 186-pound centre has amassed 195 points (77 goals, 118 assists) in 642 career games having also spent time in Arizona, Montreal, Vegas and Nashville. The Senators did not retain goalie Anton Forsberg and defenceman Dennis Gilbert. Forsberg signed a two-year, $4.5-million contract with the Los Angeles Kings a day after Ottawa inked 22-year-old goalie Leevi Merilainen to a one-year extension. Merilainen will backup Linus Ullmark next season. Gilbert, who joined the Senators from the Buffalo Sabres in the Dylan Cozens-Josh Norris swap at last season's deadline, put pen to paper on a one-year, $875,000 deal with the Philadelphia Flyers. Claude Giroux Takes Pay Cut To Sign Extension With His Hometown Ottawa Senators
The Ottawa Senators have completed the finishing touches to signing Claude Giroux to a one-year contract extension. Giroux will earn $2 million in base salary, along with the opportunity to earn a maximum of $4.75 million in additional bonuses. This contract also includes a full no-move clause. Ottawa GM Steve Staios shared what he values most in his latest signing. Advertisement 'Claude brings veteran leadership and a competitive edge to our group and has been a consistent presence on and off the ice,' Staios said. 'We are excited to bring him back next season.' PuckPedia broke down the bonus structure for Giroux's new contract. The Ottawa native can earn an additional $250,000 for playing 20, 30 and 60 games next season, and for making the playoffs. With that, he can make another $500,000 for advancing past Round 1 of the playoffs, $250,000 for Round 2, $500,000 for the third round and a final $500,000 if the Sens win the 2026 Stanley Cup. To earn those post-season bonuses, Giroux must play at least 50 percent of the team's playoff games. After locking up Giroux to this one-year deal, Ottawa have around $8.19 million in salary cap space, per PuckPedia. The Sens still have a handful of free agents to deal with, including goaltender Anton Forsberg, as well as Adam Gaudette, Nick Cousins and more. Advertisement The 37-year-old veteran is coming off a three-year contract with the Senators, where he earned $6.5 million in average annual value, but he has slowly declined in terms of offensive production since he joined in 2022-23 Last season, Giroux scored 15 goals and 35 assists for 50 points in 81 appearances. That's 20 fewer goals and 29 fewer points than his first season in Ottawa. Claude Giroux (Sergei Belski-Imagn Images) Giroux had a solid post-season in Ottawa's return to the playoffs for the first time in eight years. In the six games he featured in against the Toronto Maple Leafs in the first round, he scored one goal and recorded four assists for five points. Advertisement In his 18 seasons in the NHL, Giroux has played 1,263 games and scored 1,116 points in his career. Forsberg's 3rd shutout of season carries Ottawa Senators to 3-0 win over Florida Panthers
Anton Forsberg made 40 saves in his third shutout of the season as the Ottawa Senators beat the Florida Panthers 3-0 on Saturday. Jake Sanderson had a goal and an assist and Drake Batherson and Matthew Highmore also scored for Ottawa. Sergei Bobrovsky made 19 saves for the Panthers, who dropped their fourth straight game. Florida can secure a postseason berth if Toronto beats Columbus later Saturday. The Panthers had not been shut out since a 4-0 loss to Montreal on Dec. 28. Forsberg was peppered with shots from Florida. He went side-to-side for a save midway through the second period on Seth Jones and made a highlight-reel save on Sam Reinheart near the end of the frame. The Senators (41-29-6) moved seven points ahead of Montreal for the first wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference in a bid for their first playoff berth since 2016-17. The Canadiens host Philadelphia later Saturday. With two minutes left in the second period, it looked as if Florida had beaten Forsberg for a goal. But, a high stick was immediately called, preserving the shutout bid. Sanderson scored for the fourth straight home game. Both teams play Sunday. The Panthers host the Toronto Maple Leafs, and the Senators host the Columbus Blue Jackets.
