Stellantis posts first-half losses in ‘tough' year
This story was originally published on Automotive Dive. To receive daily news and insights, subscribe to our free daily Automotive Dive newsletter. Stellantis on Tuesday announced its first half 2025 revenues fell 13% compared to the same period last year, resulting in an operating loss of 2.3 billion euros ($2.68 billion), but says U.S. tariff losses for the whole year will be slightly lower than first anticipated at 1.3 billion euros ($1.5 billion). The automaker says net revenues for the half fell to 74.3 billion euros ($86.6 billion), which it blamed mainly on declines in North America and Europe, but were partially offset by growth in South America. The company's loss for the January-June period was a significant swing into the red compared to an H1 2024 net profit of 5.6 billion euros ($6.53 billion). A closer look at individual markets revealed shipments to North America fell 23%, mainly because of reduced production of imported vehicles most impacted by tariffs, lower fleet channel sales and production gaps resulting from discontinued models, driving a net revenue reduction of 26%. Shipments in Europe for Stellantis fell 7% year-on-year, mainly owing to the slower ramp-up of recently launched B-segment vehicles, although partially offset by higher volumes of Fiat 600, Peugeot 3008 and 5008 models, as well as the Jeep Avenger. However, for the region there was a 2% reduction in net revenues. The South America market was the group's bright spot, recording shipments up 20%, driven primarily by increased volumes in Argentina, as well as increased YoY shipments of Fiat's Strada, Fastback and Argo models, causing net revenues in the region to climb 5%. The Middle East and African markets reported a slight increase in shipments at 5%, while China experienced fierce price wars. Stellantis blamed the latter mainly for adjusted operating income in the China, India and Asia-Pacific region falling 38% compared to the same period in 2024. Nonetheless, Stellantis expects improvement in the second half of 2025 with total industrial available liquidity now at 47.2 billion euros ($55 billion), above targeted ratio to net revenues. Total inventories of 1.2 million units by the end of June rose 1% compared to 2024, even as new products launched and consolidated shipments rose 5% sequentially. The company re-established financial guidance and says it expects continued sequential improvement in H2 2025. '(The year) 2025 has been and will be a tough year but we are making progress on our product wave,' CEO Antonio Filosa said on a call with investors. 'The second half will see a range of new products that will promote growth,' he added. Filosa says closing Stellantis's hydrogen fuel-cell LCV program was part of the rationalization needed to drive a turnaround for the group. 'We ended the commercial-vehicle hydrogen program because there was not a clear path to profitability,' he said. Meanwhile, a new focus on the U.S. market is underway. 'In the U.S., we need to reconnect with our customers with our iconic models,' Filosa said. 'The all-new Jeep Cherokee will mark our re-entry into the midsize SUV segment and bringing back the 'Hemi' V-8 with Dodge in the fullsize sector responds to what our customers want.' Stellantis CEO Says the V-8 Hellcat-Powered Ram TRX Will Return
The Ram 1500 TRX will return to the full-size pickup truck's lineup, according to Stellantis CEO Antonio Filosa. The return of the V-8 Hellcat-powered TRX has been rumored for a while, and it's expected to be revealed later this year as a 2026 model. The last TRX had 702 horsepower, but we expect the new engine's output to exceed that figure and possibly surpass the Ford F-150 Raptor R's 720-hp bogey. Almost as soon as it was announced that the Ram 1500 TRX would be discontinued after the 2024 model year, rumors started circulating about the high-performance pickup truck's eventual return. While things looked a little dicey when Ram stopped offering the beloved Hemi V-8 in its half-ton trucks, the TRX's revival got an adrenaline shot to the heart earlier this year when we learned that the eight-cylinder engines were making a comeback. And now Stellantis CEO Antonio Filosa has confirmed that the Ram TRX will rise from the dead. During an earnings call yesterday, Filosa said that, ". . . the V-8 engine on versions such as the Ram 1500 TRX will deliver to us additional volumes." Perhaps the new CEO forgot that an official announcement about the TRX's return hadn't yet been made, or perhaps he simply knew that the Hellcat-powered truck's resurrection was one of the worst-kept secrets in the biz. Car and Driver reached out to a Ram spokesperson for comment on what Filosa said, and the rep told us that the CEO's comments stand. View Photos Marc Urbano | Car and Driver While Filosa didn't say anything about a timeline for when the TRX would be revealed or when it would go into production, it has been rumored that it will join the Ram 1500 lineup for the 2026 model year. As for details about its powertrain, the new TRX will have a version of the iron-block supercharged 6.2-liter V-8, which last made 702 horsepower and 650 pound-feet of torque. Of course, the former figure will most likely be higher. Currently, the Ford F-150 Raptor R features a 720-hp supercharged 5.2-liter V-8. We'd wager that the 2026 Ram TRX will exceed that output, even if it's only by a horsey or two. And let's not forget the Hellcat Redeye, which could summon over 800 ponies. The Ram TRX Is Coming Back
The latest car news, reviews, and features. I knew this was going to happen. And with Ram making such a big deal about the Hemi V8's return, I bet you did too. Stellantis CEO Antonio Filosa just announced during the company's first-half earnings call that the Ram TRX is coming back, likely with the supercharged 6.2-liter Hellcat V8 that they swore was going away. Not that I'm complaining, of course. Filosa didn't say much about the super truck, only letting the name and engine detail slip. Mopar Insiders quotes him as saying, 'The V8 engine on versions, such as the Ram 1500 TRX, will deliver to us additional volumes but also accredited margins per unit.' We won't know what all is different or the same about the truck until we get closer to launch, which is reportedly coming in early 2026 with production beginning in January. If I were a betting man, I'd place a hefty wager on the TRX getting more power than its old figure of 702 horses. It'll once again duke it out with the Ford F-150 Raptor R, which now makes 720 hp. I can't see Ram revisiting the rivalry without gunning for more, but of course, that's only speculation at this point. One way or another, Ram's performance lineup will mirror the Blue Oval's, with the twin-turbo I6-powered RHO fighting the normal Raptor and the TRX going against the R. This totally tracks with how Ram CEO Tim Kuniskis runs the brand. He's all about machismo and bragadocio, which makes him beloved by some and maligned by others who would rather not put up with it. But you can never say he isn't a man of the people—especially when those people cry for more V8 pickup trucks. The dude delivers every time. Got a tip or question for the author? Classic Jeep, Dodge, Chrysler fans just got the best news from Stellantis
New Stellantis (STLA) Antonio Filosa knew he had his work cut out for him when he took over the job. Filosa, 51, officially took over for former CEO Carlos Tavares on June 23, but he has been with the company for 25 years, and he understands that the international conglomerate doesn't have much without the North American market. Last month, the company announced that Filosa would be moving the CEO's office to Detroit, Michigan, while also revealing that it will build a $388 million "Megahub" in Van Buren Township, just outside Detroit. Related: New Stellantis CEO deals with more of the company's old problems But Stellantis is struggling with the 25% tariffs that have been in place for months now. Stellantis shipped 7% fewer vehicles this year than it did in the first half of 2024. But somehow, that decline was better than the 14% decline it reported in the second half of 2024 during the time Tavares stepped down in October. Stellantis says its "industrial costs" rose by 1.6 billion ($1.85 billion), including a net 330 million euros ($381 million) of tariff expenses. The company expects its tariff expenses for the full year to be at the high end of its previous estimate of between 1 billion and 1.5 billion euros ($1.15 billion to $1.73 billion) Getting the North American market back won't be easy, but Filosa pinpointed exactly where he thinks the company lost its most important market. It will take more than money invested in the States to win back customers, and Filosa acknowledged this fact during the earnings call. "For sure, one important root cause of our market deterioration, both in North America, especially, but also in Enlarged Europe, is the fact that in the past we decided to phase out many important, relevant, and successful nameplates," Filosa said. Filosa went on to name seven popular vehicles that were phased out during his predecessor's tenure, including Jeep Cherokee, Jeep Renegade, Chrysler 300, Ram DS Classic, Ram ProMaster City, Dodge Charger and the Challenger. Related: Jeep Dodge parent Stellantis makes change US consumers will love Those seven brands alone generated 300,00 units sold per year, but have all been inexplicably mothballed in recent years. So not only will Stellantis bring back many of the brands that made Jeep, Dodge, Chrysler the iconic brand it was, the company is also bringing back the ancillary bells and whistles that defined American muscle. "The powertrain that we have discontinued in the past that we have coming back, starting with the legendary Hemi V8 engine, has been shelved before and this means volumes, and this means margin per unit," Filosa said. Earlier this year, Stellantis reported that total first-quarter 2025 U.S. sales decreased 12% year-over-year, despite a 16% increase in Ram brand sales and a 1% increase in Chrysler brand sales. Jeep brand sales saw a 2% increase. The company reported total sales of 293,225 vehicles in the first three months of the year. Business did not improve in the second quarter. On Tuesday, Stellantis reported that first-half net revenues fell 13% year over year, driven once again by declines in North America and Europe. The company had a net loss of 2.3 billion euros ($2.66 billion) after reporting a 5.6 billion euro profit a year ago. Stellantis closed Tuesday's session down 1.13% to $9.59 per share. It's Official: The Ram TRX Is Back
It's official: The Ram 1500 TRX is making a comeback. Newly appointed Stellantis CEO Antonio Filosa confirmed the model's revival during the company's Q2 financial call, pointing to its ability to generate big margins for the brand. "The V-8 engine on versions, such as the Ram 1500 TRX, will deliver to us additional volumes but also accredited margins per unit," Filosa told shareholders, according to Mopar Insiders . Photo by: Ram Filosa didn't provide details about when production would begin, but Mopar Insiders cites unnamed, "well-placed" sources that claim the new TRX could hit dealerships as soon as January 2026. We're inclined to trust Mopar Insiders' source, given that they were the ones who predicted the TRX's return way back in March . There's no word on what a new TRX would look like, though we can make some educated guesses. The previous truck used a Hellcat-sourced 6.2-liter supercharged V-8 making 702 horsepower. With Ram CEO Tim Kuniskis now also heading Stellantis's SRT performance division , we expect the forced induction V-8 to make a comeback. It'll likely make more power, just to show up the 720-hp Raptor R , but retain its off-road prowess and brutish, rugged design. The TRX's return represents a small piece of Ram's broader shift back to V-8s. The company confirmed the Hemi's return to the 1500 for the 2026 model year and promises 25 new product announcements within the next 18 months. So the TRX is just the tip of the iceberg. With fuel economy standards now essentially meaningless under the current administration, it's likely Ram (and its sister brand, Dodge) will continue to lean into its eight-cylinder heritage without fear of being restricted by regulations.
