Video: First detainees arrive at 'Alligator Alcatraz,' controversial site open for business
The first people to be processed and held have arrived at the high-profile and controversial immigration facility in the Everglades dubbed "Alligator Alcatraz." A video obtained by The Palm Beach Post at mid-morning on July 3 showed a white shuttle-type bus arriving at the facility under dark gray skies. It is not clear how many people have been taken to the location so far. The facility, which immigration advocates have decried as "concentration camp," was slated to become operational on July 1 after a visit by President Donald Trump. A short while after the video was taken, a hard rain began to fall. The arrival followed videos showing rain water dripping through the tents. 'Alligator Alcatraz' is the nickname of the new immigration detention facility in Florida. It is located at a remote unused airstrip in the heart of the Everglades. The location is surrounded by alligators and pythons, as a natural barrier. Antonio Fins is a politics and business editor at The Palm Beach Post, part of the USA TODAY Florida Network.
