‘Shocked' Anup Jalota didn't know Jasleen Matharu would call their relationship ‘romantic' on Bigg Boss 12, admits she benefitted from rumours: ‘Mujhe laga Bigg Boss waalon ne bola hoga…'
Veteran singer Anup Jalota and Jasleen Matharu raised eyebrows after presenting themselves as a romantic couple on Bigg Boss 12. Their significant age gap drew heavy criticism, prompting Jalota to later clarify that their relationship was purely that of a music teacher and student. Jasleen also appeared alongside him in the film Woh Meri Student Hai, directed by her father. In a recent interview, Jalota addressed the Bigg Boss controversy and spoke candidly about his relationship with Jasleen. During a conversation with The Lallantop, the singer shared, 'If you listen to her singing, she is very talented. She used to come to me for singing lessons, around 5-6 times only. She once told me that she received an offer to participate in Bigg Boss. I said that's great, you will earn fame. She used to dance in groups and sing at that time.' Anup Jalota revealed that he initially turned down Jasleen Matharu's offer to participate in the show, but her father convinced him. 'But, there was a condition that you can only come as a weird pair in that season. I asked her to take Sukhwinder ji, but she told me that he had denied. Even I said no, I won't go. I don't have time, there were so many concerts. Her father came and convinced me. I said yes, but only on one condition that we will go as guru and shishya, so she agreed,' he said. ALSO READ | Kishore Kumar initially refused to sing my composition, reveals Anup Jalota: 'He said tum kuchh classical bana doge' On Bigg Boss 12, Jalota was shocked as Matharu mentioned that they were romantically involved since three years. He continued, 'I entered the stage and met Salman Khan. Then, Jasleen was welcomed as my partner. I told him that she is my student. She also sang a song, it was beautiful. When Salman asked if she was my shishya, she said that she had been in a relationship with me for three years. I thought, 'Yeh kya hogaya? Yeh toh nahi hua tha.' We never even knew each other that much.' Anup Jalota assumed that the makers of Bigg Boss might have suggested her to do so. 'I was shocked, but I was thinking that this might be a part of the game, kisi ne toh use yeh padhaaya hoga bolne ke lie. When we were going inside, I asked her about it. Main samajh gaya tha isse kuch game banta hai, ya toh Bigg Boss waalon ne bola hoga, usse ek awfa uthti hai. I never confronted her. Main samajh gaya tha ki peeche koi khel hua hai, shayad uska use koi fayda hi hoga, and she benefitted,' he said. When the veteran singer exited the Bigg Boss house, he held a press conference with Jasleen Matharu's father to clear the air. 'When I came out after one and a half months, bahar toh toofan macha hua tha. We didn't know anything inside. A friend told me what was going on. I asked him not to worry, sab khatam kardenge. Mujhe pata tha jo sach hai hi nahi, use khatam karna bada asaan hota hai. I called a press conference at home with Jasleen's father. We both sat and addressed the media,' he said. 'We told them that both of us have decided that we will do the kanyadaan at Jasleen's wedding. Ab sawaal konsa rehega poochne wala? Baat hi khatam hogayi. The doubts went away because no one saw us together in any party, watching films together, performing on stage, or on any vacations. Everything slowly faded away. Even today, after Bigg Boss, I never spoke to her. I only talk to her father sometimes,' Jalota concluded.

With a fan base that spans continents, he commands packed arenas and delivers unforgettable live performances, which have earned him the title of Bhajan Samrat. The Bhajan Samrat Of Singing Community Here we are talking about renowned singer Anup Jalota, popularly referred to as Bhajan Samrat, who was born on July 29, 1953. He began accompanying his father, Purshottam Das Jalota, who also sang bhajans, at the tender age of 7. Over time, Anup became one of the most renowned bhajan singers in India. Some of his most iconic bhajans include 'Aisi Laagi Lagan,' 'Main Nahi Makhan Khayo,' 'Rang De Chunariya,' 'Jag Me Sundar Hai Do Naam', and 'Chadariya Jhini Re Jhini.' His extensive record sales of bhajan albums have led to a significant net worth. For international shows, Anup charges around 15 to 16 lakh rupees per concert and does 3 to 4 concerts monthly. He is particularly popular in countries with a large Indian diaspora, and the demand for his performances there is substantial, contributing to an estimated monthly income of 60 lakh rupees from abroad. In a 2024 interview with The Times of India, Anup discussed his marital history, stating, 'Sonali (Sheth) was my first wife, but we faced difficulties, leading to the end of our marriage. I'm happy she found a new partner in Roop Kumar Rathod. My second marriage to Bina (Bhatia) lasted only a year due to our differences and a lack of understanding between us. After experiencing lessons from these two unsuccessful marriages, I finally married Medha (Gujral), and we enjoyed a happy 21-year marriage. We have a son, Aryamann, who resides in New York. Sadly, Medha battled health issues and passed away in November 2014.' Since Aryamann lives in New York and does not stay with him, the bhajan singer has sold all his properties and currently owns no home in India. The 71-year-old artist has expressed in several interviews that he wishes to spare his son the burden of dealing with the formalities of selling his father's house after his death. Anup Jalota also participated in Salman Khan's Bigg Boss 12 in 2018. He was evicted from the show after surviving for 6 weeks.

Anup Jalota to pay tribute to Jagjit Singh and Pankaj Udhas at his Sydney Opera House debut
Anup Jalota After gracing prestigious stages around the world, Padma Shri Bhajan Samrat Anup Jalota is all set to make his debut at the iconic Sydney Opera House later this month. Speaking to us in his trademark humorous style, he quipped, 'Mujhe lagta hai uski repairing chal rahi hogi, isliye delay hua bulaane mein (laughs)! I've been performing in Australia for the past 35 years and have done over 100 concerts across nearly every city. Now, the organisers want to see me at the Sydney Opera House. For them, I'm not new, but this combination is. What's even more special is that Talat Aziz will also be performing with me. So, the audience will get to experience his beautiful ghazals too. While I visit Australia every couple of years, Talat is returning after 15 years.' Reflecting on the significance of this performance, he shared, 'It means a lot to me. I've performed at venues like Madison Square Garden in New York, the Royal Albert Hall, Wembley Conference Centre, and Lincoln Centre. So, why not the Sydney Opera House?' This time, however, he's decided to keep the focus exclusive. 'When you're performing at the Sydney Opera House, you need a big audience — around 2,200 people. If we do shows in nearby cities, it splits the crowd. So, apart from Sydney Opera House, I will perform in only two other cities that are geographically distant and unlikely to draw the same audience,' he explained. Jagjit Singh and Pankaj Udhas When asked whether he has tailored his performance for the international stage, Jalota said, 'It's being presented as a ghazal mehfil, but I know the audience won't let me leave without singing Aisi Lagi Lagan — that's a must. So yes, I'll include that along with a few other songs. We also plan to pay tribute to Jagjit Singh and Pankaj Udhas by performing some of their popular tracks. They were not just beloved artistes but dear friends. I can't think of a better place than the Sydney Opera House to honour their legacy.'
