The controversy behind the title The release of the Malayalam movie Janaki vs State of Kerala, starring Union Minister and superstar Suresh Gopi, was stalled following a demand from the Censor Board for a film title change. According to the film's makers, the censor board asked them to change the name Janaki, saying it also refers to the Hindu goddess Sita. The movie tells the story of a woman who faced assault and took legal fight against the state. The board reportedly said that God's name should not be given to a woman who was assaulted. The film was later forwarded to the CBFC headquarters in Mumbai, where officials demanded a change in the title. On Wednesday, IMDb (Internet Movie Database) announced its list of most popular Indian movies of 2025 so far as the first half of the year came to a close. The list featured films releasing between January and June 2025, which saw the most visitors on the IMDb site. While several big films from across several languages featured in the top 10, a small Tamil film with no stars and a budget of just ₹35 crore managed to beat them. The David that beat several Goliaths Dragon starred Pradeep Ranganathan and Anupama Parameswaran. {{^userSubscribed}} {{^usCountry}} {{/usCountry}} {{#usCountry}} {{/usCountry}} {{/userSubscribed}} {{^userSubscribed}} {{^usCountry}} {{/usCountry}} {{#usCountry}} {{/usCountry}} {{/userSubscribed}} According to IMDb, the list tabulated all the movies released in India between January 1, 2025, and July 1, 2025, that have an average IMDb user rating of 6 or higher with at least 10,000 votes. Ten titles were consistently the most popular with IMDb customers, as determined by the actual page views of the more than 250 million monthly visitors to IMDb worldwide. Vicky Kaushal-led Chhaava, the highest-grossing Indian film of the year, was at number 1 in the list, quite unsurprisingly. But the second spot went to Tamil sleeper hit, Dragon. The Pradeep Ranganathan-starrer coming-of-age comedy drama was made on a ₹35 crore budget and went on to gross over ₹150 crore at the box office. The film generated immense buzz upon its release and later OTT release, leading to such a high spot in the list. {{^userSubscribed}} {{^usCountry}} {{/usCountry}} {{#usCountry}} {{/usCountry}} {{/userSubscribed}} {{^userSubscribed}} {{^usCountry}} {{/usCountry}} {{#usCountry}} {{/usCountry}} {{/userSubscribed}} Read More {{^usCountry}} {{/usCountry}} {{^usCountry}} {{/usCountry}} {{^usCountry}} Dragon starred Pradeep in the titular role, along with Anupama Parameswaran, Kayadu Lohar, Mysskin, Gautham Vasudev Menon, K. Makers of Malayalam film Janaki vs State of Kerala agree to change title amid clash with censor board
The makers of Janaki vs State of Kerala, starring Union Minister Suresh Gopi, informed the Kerala High Court on Wednesday that they are willing to change the film's title to V Janaki or Janaki V, as suggested by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). Janaki vs State of Kerala stars Suresh Gopi and Anupama Parameswaran. The statement was made during a hearing on a plea filed by the producers challenging the CBFC's objection to the original title Janaki, which had delayed the film's clearance. What did the CBFC object to The Censor Board had earlier refused to grant certification unless the title was changed, citing potential religious sensitivity, as Janaki is also an alternative name for the Hindu goddess Sita. The filmmakers argued that the name referred to the film's lead character, a rape survivor named Janaki who fights a legal battle against the state. During the hearing on Wednesday, the CBFC informed the court that if the producers made the suggested changes--either renaming the film as V Janaki or Janaki V and muting the name in one of the courtroom scenes--clearance could be granted within three days of resubmission. The filmmakers, while expressing difficulty in rebranding the film so close to release, agreed to the changes after the board maintained its firm position on the title. Justice N Nagaresh adjourned the case to next Wednesday for further consideration. About Janaki vs State of Kerala The film, directed by Pravin Narayanan and also starring Anupama Parameswaran, portrays a woman's legal struggle for justice after assault. The production company, Cosmos Entertainments, approached the court after delays in certification impacted the film's release schedule.

Difficult to change title: Janaki vs State of Kerala director on board's demand
Director Pravin Narayanan has defended the title of 'Janaki vs State of Kerala', suggesting that changing it at this stage is impractical. The release of the Malayalam film, starring minister Suresh Gopi and Anupama Parameswaran, has been delayed following a demand from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) to change its title. The CBFC cited religious concerns, noting that 'Janaki' refers to the Hindu goddess Sita, and their objection to using the name for a sexual assault filmmaker said, "We accept that Janaki is also another name for Goddess Sita, but it's such a common name used in many parts of the country. Through our movie, we never tried to defame Goddess Sita or any other belief system reluctant in our country."He further added, 'Maybe CBFC could have had a different perspective for the name of character. We are on the final stage of production and to rename the character at this stage is difficult for us.' Film associations across Kerala have rallied against the CBFC's request, arguing that it constitutes unnecessary interference in artistic expression. The Kerala High Court has also raised questions regarding the CBFC's decision, pointing out that the film's trailer was approved without film was originally set for release on 20 June, but the conflict has led to significant delays. The film's creators have expressed frustration, describing the CBFC's demands as "arbitrary" and "unwarranted."The Kerala High Court has asked the CBFC to provide a detailed explanation by July 2. Until a resolution is reached, the film's fate hangs in the balance, with Narayanan and his team hoping for a favourable outcome. Meanwhile, the court will watch the film on July 5 and will share its views in the next hearing, scheduled on July court's enquiry into why the film's name should be altered, especially when films named after deities are common in Indian cinema, casts doubt on the CBFC's film stars Suresh Gopi and Anupama Parameswaran in lead roles. The film community and supporters continue to advocate for its release under its original title.- Ends

‘Janaki v/s State of Kerala' row: Kerala HC questions CBFC's objection over title, filmmakers stand firm
(Picture Courtesy: Facebook) The Kerala High Court has strongly questioned the Central Board of Film Certification 's (CBFC) demand to alter the film 'JSK's title and character name. During a hearing on June 30, the court asked why the CBFC had cleared the film's teaser but was now blocking its release. It also sought clarity on why the name 'Janaki' was being objected to, pointing out that Indian cinema has seen many films named after gods and goddesses without issue. As reported by Mathrubhumi, the High Court has directed the Deputy Solicitor General of India (DSGI) to submit a detailed explanation by July 2. Until then, the matter remains unresolved—but the court's observations have brought hope to the film's makers and supporters. Creative freedom For the unversed, the controversy began when CBFC denied certification to the film, citing the use of "Janaki" which is a name associated with a Hindu goddess, for the lead character played by Anupama Parameswaran. Janaki vs State Of Kerala - Official Teaser The CBFC reportedly recommended over 90 cuts, which the makers argue would seriously disrupt the narrative structure and emotional impact of the film.
