One year after Trump's attempted assassination, how politics has changed

What becomes a legend? On that list would surely be an assassination attempt that grazed the ear of a former-and-future president, prompting a flash of fist-pumping defiance that became instantly iconic. One year ago, the shooting of Donald Trump at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, was an extraordinary news story in the moment − and an event that would reverberate for him and in the American landscape. Violence isn't new to the nation's politics, of course. Four presidents have been assassinated in office − Abraham Lincoln and James Garfield in the 19th century and William McKinley and John F. Kennedy in the 20th − and every modern president has been the target of serious assassination plots. Ronald Reagan was seriously wounded by one. In the space of 17 days, Gerald Ford faced two separate attempts by women with guns, in one case an attack that left a bystander shot. But none of the failed or forestalled attempts has had more continuing impact and attention than the shooting on July 13, 2024. Trump's defiant response helped clinch a campaign that had begun heading his way. It increased his stature with such prominent figures as Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg, not to mention a rising number of male voters. Surviving such a close call emboldened the new president himself once he moved back into the Oval Office. And it bolstered the view of Trump and some of his supporters that even God was on his side. Like Teddy Roosevelt, Trump's miraculous luck Not since Teddy Roosevelt has a current or former president embraced surviving an assassination attempt with such fervor, as a sign of something meaningful and important. In 1912, Roosevelt was a former Republican president campaigning for another term as the nominee of the Progressive Party he had formed, nicknamed the Bull Moose Party. He avoided serious injury when a bullet fired by a would-be assassin was slowed by passing through the candidate's metal glasses case and a thick copy of his speech ("Progressive Cause Greater Than Any Individual") before penetrating his chest. "I don't know whether you fully understand that I have just been shot," he told the crowd outside the Gilpatrick Hotel in Milwaukee, "but it takes more than that to kill a Bull Moose!" He delivered his full speech before getting medical attention, then carried the bullet in his body for the rest of his life after doctors determined it would be too risky to remove it. More than a century later, Trump, another former Republican president seeking a second term, was spared serious injury by his own seemingly miraculous twist of fate. He happened to turn his head to point to a chart showing illegal border crossings at the instant a bullet fired by a sniper on a nearby rooftop whizzed by, grazing his ear. Had it come an inch closer, the injury could have been catastrophic; instead, it required only stitches and a bandage, though he says his ear still throbs from time to time. A man in the audience was struck and killed in a series of gunshots before a Secret Service sniper killed the shooter. Days later, in his acceptance speech to the Republican National Convention − in Milwaukee, site of Roosevelt's near-miss and just three blocks from the former site of the Gilpatrick Hotel − Trump recounted the assassination attempt in dramatic detail. His right ear was covered with a folded white bandage. "I stand before you only by the grace of almighty God," he told the spellbound audience. He vowed never to speak of the shooting again, a promise he would break within weeks. Now, every visitor taking the White House tour walks by a painting that depicts the moment he rose after being tackled by Secret Service agents, pumping his fist in the air. With blood streaking down his face, he shouted "Fight! Fight! Fight!" "Some new artwork at the White House," the official White House account posted on the social media platform X, with emoji eyes. President Barack Obama's official portrait was moved to clear the prime space in the foyer of the State Floor for the new painting. High-top sneakers and expensive perfume recall the day "It was the hand of God," Trump told journalist Salena Zito the day after the shooting. "He was there." In her new book, "Butler: The Untold Story of the Near Assassination of Donald Trump and the Fight for America's Heartland," being published July 8 by conservative imprint Center Street, Zito writes that the shooting fueled the then-78-year-old's determination to get big things done in office − even more than during his turbulent first term. At the time of the shooting, President Joe Biden was in free fall after a faltering performance in the June 27 presidential debate raised questions about his mental acuity. He would eventually withdraw as the Democratic standard-bearer. Two weeks after the debate, Trump's extraordinary response to the shooting prompted some skeptics to take a second look at him. Later that day, Musk announced he was endorsing Trump. His machismo may have been especially appealing to some male voters. On Election Day, the Pew Research Center calculates he carried men by 12 percentage points after only breaking even in 2020. And there's this: A company Trump owns sold out of its $299 limited-edition high-top sneakers that showed an image of his bloodied face on each side − "eye-catching and unapologetic," the description said. Last week, the site began to offer $249-a-bottle cologne with a name peculiar for perfume but distinctly Trumpian: "Fight Fight Fight."

Kai Cenat & Crew Take Over Tony Parker's Texas Mansion For ‘AMP Summer' Streaming Marathon

Source: Slaven Vlasic / Getty Kai Cenat already has Gen Z on the edge of their computer chairs, and isn't letting up with his latest streaming event. His next big venture has been dubbed the AMP Summer, and he announced it via a trailer a few days ago. Set in the sweltering Texas desert, the AMP (Any Means Possible) crew, consisting of him, Duke Dennis, Chrisnxtdoor, Fanum and ImDavisss in their broken-down RV. Agent00 narrates the crew attempting to fix their ride when T-Pain arrives on horseback to offer them a nearby crib to stream from that's outfitted with a 24-hour restaurant, two basketball courts, and a waterpark where they promise to stream for 12 hours daily for a month, officially kicking off at 1 p.m. on July 1. Since they're in the Lone Star State, there's no better way to kick off the marathon than by hanging out with Texas legend and former San Antonio Spurs star Tony Parker. Upon arrival, the four-time NBA champion shows the AMP crew around his estate, showcasing his superhero memorabilia, what he calls his 'secret championship room,' which features all the sports goods from his storied NBA career, and the 24-hour Nando's restaurant in the backyard. With as many hijinks and guests the AMP squad gets involved with, they'll need a lot of space for their antics, and the championship-worthy home should be plenty big. Spanning 53 total acres, the property features a private water park, including lazy rivers, and boasts 10 bedrooms, eight bathrooms, and four half bathrooms. The house also features a nearly 6,000-square-foot gym, a tennis court, an outdoor volleyball court, a basketball court, and a wine room that can accommodate up to 1,500 bottles. Parker listed the compound for $16.5 million in 2024, but the former Spur clearly hasn't found anyone interested in taking it off his hands. Parker even hung out with the streamers in the home's restaurant, telling them about the time Kobe Bryant learned French to trash-talk him during the playoffs. 'It didn't work, but mad respect he learned the language,' Parker said. The streaming has already commenced with Cenat revealing his setup for the entirety of July, which is literally a super-sized version of his Atlanta home, including the white walls and greyscale leopard carpet. There's even a massive computer chair placed in front of his desk that's so large several members of the crew can sit comfortably as their feet dangle. The Myths and Misconceptions Around Menstruation and Menopause

f you ask ChatGPT for some of the biggest myths about periods, you'll get suggestions like, 'You shouldn't use tampons if you're a virgin,' 'You can't exercise when you have your period,' and 'PMS is just in your head.' And given the way women have been culturally conditioned to think of periods as shameful for centuries, it's no wonder misinformation like this is still floating around today. 'A nurse I work with told me her daughter was called to the office in her elementary school for 'saying a bad word,' and the word was vagina,' recalls Karen Tang, MD, a board-certified gynecologist and gynecologic surgeon. In a conversation with Dr. Tang at Katie's Feeling Good at Any Age event sponsored by P&G, Katie spoke about another taboo subject that many women are hesitant to discuss: incontinence. 'It's one of those things people feel very nervous about discussing,' Katie offered, 'But knowledge is power, and we have to stop being embarrassed.' According to Dr. Tang, half of all women will experience bladder incontinence at some point in their lifetime. 'Every time I go to a children's trampoline birthday party, the moms and I look at each other and just say, 'Nope,'' she shares. 'For me,' says Katie, 'It's peeing when sneezing.' Anything that weakens the muscles in the pelvic floor, which can include everything from pregnancy to a chronic cough, can lead to incontinence, says Dr. Tang. 'It can happen to women of all ages, and the biggest myth I want to debunk is that there's nothing you can do about it,' she says. There are plenty of nonsurgical options to help strengthen the pelvic floor, including physical therapy, Dr. Tang explains: 'A lot of women don't know how to do Kegel exercises, and pelvic floor therapy is like having a physical trainer there to explain exactly how to do these exercises correctly.' In addition to encouraging women to speak up about their concerns without shame, Dr. Tang notes the importance of keeping women's health issues top-of-mind for researchers. 'The funding for fibroids, which impacts around 80 percent of black women and 70 percent of white women, is a fraction of what it is for other diseases,' she says. 'The subtext is that fibroids are just an annoyance, but they can cause hemorrhaging and infertility.' Women's pain should always be taken seriously, and the best way to make that happen is by sharing our experiences — even the embarrassing ones — with each other. "Unlimited Scope Of Abuse": Meitei, Thadou Tribe Bodies Ask Centre To Remove 'Any Kuki Tribes' From Manipur ST List

Imphal/Guwahati/New Delhi: Two top civil society organisations of Manipur's Meitei community and the indigenous distinct tribe Thadou have asked the central government to remove 'Any Kuki Tribes' from the list of Scheduled Tribes (ST) in Manipur. The Meitei Alliance and the Thadou Inpi Manipur in a joint representation to Union Tribal Affairs Minister Jual Oram said the inclusion of 'Any Kuki Tribes' in Manipur's ST list is "constitutionally flawed, ethnographically invalid, and a serious threat to the rights and peaceful co-existence of existing recognised communities in the state." They also called 'Any Kuki Tribes' an "invalid continuation of a deleted colonial classification." "Any Kuki Tribes proponents claim it represents [sic] a 'Kuki tribe'. This is false. 'Kuki' is neither a tribe nor a language, and it does not denote a distinct culture. It is a loose, political label without ethnographic or linguistic basis, often misused as an umbrella identity for varied unrelated groups," the Meitei Alliance and the Thadou Inpi Manipur said in the representation to the Union minister. A Thadou Inpi Manipur spokesperson said there are 33 distinct recognised tribes in Manipur's ST list, and adding 'Any Kuki Tribes' takes the total to 34. The last tribe to be added to the ST list was 'Mate' in 2012. The two civil society organisations pointed out that while the 33 recognised tribes are distinct, 'Any Kuki Tribes' is wide open to misuse because it also means "anybody" can claim to be a part of 'Any Kuki Tribes'. Statements on social media purportedly made by Hmar and Paite tribe organisations claimed they supported the Meitei and Thadou representation on the 'Any Kuki Tribes' issue. NDTV could not independently verify the authenticity of the Hmar and Paite organisations' statements. In Manipur's context, the 'Any Kuki Tribes' category gives "unlimited scope of abuse" by enabling "fabrication of endless tribal identities... which could even include foreigners and illegal immigrants," the Meitei Alliance and the Thadou Inpi Manipur said in their representation to the Union tribal affairs minister. "This unlimited and undefined scope opens the door for mass misuse, mass infiltration, illegal immigration and identity fraud." The same two civil society organisations from different communities in Manipur, where the ethnic divide is deep, had on March 8 made a joint call for peace in an unprecedented move as they met for the first time on a common platform and for a common goal since the outbreak of ethnic violence in May 2023. Following meetings of the state cabinet on October 19, 2018 and January 2, 2023, the Manipur government on February 8, 2023 formally recommended the central government to delete 'Any Kuki Tribes' from the ST list. Nearly three months later, the ethnic clashes broke out. The Meitei Alliance and the Thadou Inpi Manipur presented a 12-point explanation to the Union tribal affairs minister suggesting why 'Any Kuki Tribes' should be removed from the ST list. Some of them included "arbitrary and improper inclusion, non-acceptance by native communities; duplication of recognised tribes, especially Thadou; invalid continuation of a deleted colonial classification, unlimited and abusable scope, misuse by surnames and clans, and inconsistent with the official ST framework". The two civil society organisations point out that 'Any Kuki Tribes' is essentially an "invalid continuation of a deleted colonial classification." During the 1951-56 period, colonial-era broad groupings like 'Any Kuki Tribe', 'Any Naga Tribe', and 'Any Lushai Tribe' were temporarily used, they said. After a proper survey by the Kaka Kalelkar Commission [India's first Backward Classes Commission] and with the recommendation of the then state government and a proper ethnographic verification, the 1956 SC/ST Amendment Act or Modification Order deleted 'Any Kuki' and 'Any Naga' - and instead recognised 29 distinct Scheduled Tribes, the Meitei Alliance and the Thadou Inpi Manipur said. "However, the broad classification of 'Any Mizo (Lushai)' was retained for linguistic-cultural reasons. The re-insertion of 'Any Kuki Tribes' in 2003 violated this settled constitutional and ethnological framework," the two civil society organisations said in their representation to the Union minister. "There is no justification for creating AKT [Any Kuki Tribes]. The creation of AKT sets a dangerous precedent: if every discontented sub-group within a tribe claims separate ST status, it will result in unending community fragmentation. The deletion of AKT will preserve the sanctity of the ST list as well as the integrity and unity of the recognised communities of Manipur," they said. A Thadou Inpi Manipur spokesperson said the organisation has been trying to raise awareness about 'Any Kuki Tribes' for a long time, and only now people in Manipur have started realising the gravity of the matter. "We need to do a lot more. Raising awareness was a start. We hope all communities in Manipur unite and recognise this huge problem to undo the damage done to the state," the spokesperson said. The ethnic clashes in Manipur have killed over 260 people and internally displaced nearly 50,000.

Brits urged to check crucial details to avoid extra costs on summer holidays

Brits are being urged to make a vital check when booking their summer holidays to avoid any unnecessary spending while they're away As the UK prepares for a summer getaway, numerous holidaymakers are about to book their holidays. But before you secure your spot on the next flight, it pays to consider a crucial step to avoid additional costs on holiday as unexpected setbacks, such as flight disruptions or health issues, can increase your holiday budget. Luckily, protecting yourself against these issues with a travel insurance plan is possible. And buying travel insurance early can be advantageous since coverage usually begins when you purchase, not just when you start your holiday. That means, if complications arise before departure, whether they are travel or health -related, you may be protected. ‌ Carefully reading the small print is crucial; every policy has exclusions that could impact your cover while abroad, reports the Express. ‌ ABI guidance advises: "When shopping around for travel insurance, make sure that the policy is right for your needs, and do not automatically opt for the cheapest. "This is especially important if you have any pre-existing medical conditions." The Foreign Office advises Britons to secure travel insurance when booking a holiday. Carry your policy details, including the policy number and emergency phone number, while travelling abroad. It's also a good idea to share these details with loved ones, in case they need to get in touch with your insurer on your behalf. Some holidaymakers might consider 'Cancel for Any Reason' (CFAR) insurance, which is often thought to provide a full refund if you have to cancel your trip. ‌ However, these policies can be pricier and usually only refund between 50% and 70% of the total trip cost. They also typically need to be bought well ahead of time to be valid. Remember, there's no such thing as a one-size-fits-all insurance policy, so it's worth taking the time to shop around to find the best fit for your needs. ‌ It comes after it emerged that blue and burgundy passport holders may find their holiday plans scuppered by a "secret" airport rule. UK tourists could be caught off guard by a lesser-known security regulation that could disrupt their travel even before they make it to the departure lounge. ‌ While most people's concerns revolve around lengthy security lines or strikes leading to missed flights, it is your smartphone that could throw a wrench in your holiday. Travel outfit WildPack American Summer Camps cautions against letting your mobile phone's battery die, as it could lead to being denied boarding or even having your device confiscated. You might be prohibited from boarding if your phone doesn't power on when asked. Airport personnel can request you demonstrate your device functions by turning it on. However, if it's broken or uncharged and you're unable to switch it on upon request, they may disallow it from being taken aboard the plane.
