Kelantan To Host National-Level Animal Welfare Day
Head of the Animal Welfare Section of the Veterinary Regulatory Division, Department of Veterinary Services (DVS), Dr Marzuna Md Yunus KUALA LUMPUR, July 14 (Bernama) -- Kelantan will host the national-level 2025 Animal Welfare Day celebration to be held at the Seri Nipah Resort, in Bachok, this Saturday, with a focus on the horse industry. Head of the Animal Welfare Section of the Veterinary Regulatory Division, Department of Veterinary Services (DVS), Dr Marzuna Md Yunus, said the programme would be carried out with the cooperation of the state government and Universiti Malaysia Kelantan. She said the focus on the horse industry for this year's celebration aligns with its significance as part of Kelantan's cultural identity. Among the activities planned in conjunction with the celebration are the SMART Horse competition, horse joy ride performances, information sharing sessions on horse health and diseases, as well as a briefing on horse registration and transfer. 'As part of the celebration, a Horse Identification Card Registration program will also be held to raise awareness among owners about their responsibilities and the welfare needs of these animal - as is required for other animlas as well,' she said when appearing as a guest on the 'Apa Khabar Malaysia' programme on BERNAMA TV here, today. Dr Marzuna said DVS would also introduce an initiative to use microchips equipped with GPS trackers and unique serial numbers linked to the owner's information in a central database for identification purposes. "We will provide free microchips and identification cards to the first 10 owners who register," she said. At the same time, Dr Marzuna reminded the public to never commit acts of cruelty on animals, regardless of the type or status of the animal, whether pets or stray animals. "What society in this country must understand is the importance of compassion and empathy towards animals. The issue is not whether we choose to care for stray animals, but no animal should ever be mistreated, under any circumstances," she said.

Finas proposes extending viewer count period for local films to four days
KUALA LUMPUR: The National Film Development Corporation Malaysia (Finas) has proposed extending the period for calculating viewer numbers to determine eligibility for full screenings of local films under the Compulsory Screening Scheme from three days to four. Its chief executive officer Datuk Azmir Saifuddin Mutalib said the proposal was among the improvements in the amendment to the Finas Act 1981 to ensure fairer opportunities for local producers. 'Many are still confused about the scheme. Despite being called a 14-day mandatory screening, it is subject to two main conditions, the film must record at least 15 per cent audience turnout in the first three days and reach 30 per cent of total viewers to remain in the main cinema location. 'So we propose that the 15 per cent calculation be extended to four days, from Thursday to Sunday, as viewer numbers are usually higher over the weekend,' he said when appearing as a guest on Bernama TV's Apa Khabar Malaysia programme today. He said the Compulsory Screening Scheme was the only mechanism of its kind in the world, introduced to protect local films from competing with international titles, unlike countries such as China and South Korea, which implemented quota systems. Meanwhile, Azmir Saifuddin reminded producers to submit their applications at least three months before the screening date to allow the evaluation committee to arrange the schedule in an orderly manner. 'We at Finas will also be more proactive in sharing information on the annual screening schedule so that producers can plan the best dates and locations,' he said. According to him, one of the main challenges in implementing the scheme was the change in viewing habits after the COVID-19 pandemic, as audiences had become more selective and were less inclined to watch films in cinemas. 'Previously, audiences would go to the cinema three or four times a month, but now it may only be once. So the challenge is how producers plan their screening dates and locations,' he said. As additional support, Azmir Saifuddin said Finas also shared data on viewing trends, including the most popular genres and locations based on current statistics. 'For example, Malay-language horror films may be more popular in areas like Wangsa Maju or Hulu Klang, while Tamil films have their own target locations,' he said. Meanwhile, Finas chairman Datuk Hans Isaac, who also appeared as a guest on the programme, emphasised that priority should be given to selecting strategic screening slots to ensure local films have a fair chance of attracting cinema audiences. 'When I was a producer, I also wanted to know the screening time. If it was scheduled at 10 am or during prayer time, who would come to watch a Malay film? he said. He also suggested that producers appoint experienced distribution and marketing companies, rather than handling everything on their own merely to reduce costs. 'Investment in marketing also plays a key role in the success of a film,' he said.

Bernama, RTM Collaboration Enhances Delivery Ahead Of HAWANA
Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) Chief Executive Officer Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin (right) shares her insights during a live broadcast of the Selamat Pagi Malaysia (SPM) X Apa Khabar Malaysia (AKM) programme, held in conjunction with the National Journalists Day (HAWANA) 2025 at the World Trade Center (WTC), today. KUALA LUMPUR, June 13 (Bernama) -- The joint effort between the Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) and the Broadcasting Department (RTM) in successfully organising a talk show in conjunction with the National Journalists' Day (HAWANA) celebration this year should be continued. Bernama chief executive officer Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin said the close collaboration between Bernama and RTM through the combination of presentation styles of both parties in SPM x AKM (Selamat Pagi Malaysia and Apa Khabar Malaysia) programme has breathed new life into the approach to delivering mainstream media content. "It is more interesting when the approaches of RTM and Bernama are combined into SPM x AKM. That is what we feel needs to be continued this year, not to mention HAWANA being held in the federal capital. I think it is only right that programme like this should be continued," she said. She was speaking to reporters after appearing as a guest on SPMxAKM programme titled 'Journalism in the New Era: Embracing AI, Safeguarding Ethics", in conjunction with HAWANA 2025 which was broadcast live by BernamaTV and RTM from the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur (WTC KL) here, today. Director-General Datuk Suhaimi Sulaiman represented RTM as a guest in the programme. Nur-ul Afida said the collaboration opened up an opportunity for both organisations to work together not only technically, but also in the provision of content and other broadcasting elements, thus reflecting the strength of two major brands under one ministry. "RTM and Bernama are both under the Ministry of Communications. So as sibling organisations, I believe we can show how the results can be more effective and interesting when two big brands work together," she said. In concurring with her view, Suhaimi said the collaboration between RTM and Bernama is a strategic relationship that strengthens the country's information delivery ecosystem. "This partnership is very strong and is a good collaboration because we not only work together in the field but also across radio, television and digital platforms. When many thinkers come together, the result is something good in terms of quality content, relevance and is capable of attracting the interest of various strata of society," he said.
