Apple, Mastercard and Visa's antitrust lawsuit over payments has been dismissed
Apple, Mastercard and Visa have successfully dodged a lawsuit that claimed the companies were colluding to maintain the current status quo in point-of-sale-payment card services, Reuters reports. The original 2023 lawsuit filed by beverage retailer Mirage Wine and Spirits alleged that Apple was essentially accepting bribes to not develop its open payment network or open up the iPhone's NFC-based "tap to pay" functionality to competitors. The judge on the case ultimately dismissed it over a lack of evidence that Apple ever planned to offer its own payment network. Apple works with both Visa and Mastercard's payment networks to process transactions through Apple Pay. The company's relationship with the two financial services companies extends into its other financial products — the Apple Cash card in Apple Wallet is a Visa and the Apple Card credit card is a Mastercard — and has existed since the start. The New York Times reported in 2014 that Mastercard, Visa and American Express were all part of the original development of Apple Pay. The 2023 lawsuit claims that both Mastercard and Visa were paying Apple to maintain that relationship and their own dominance. The iPhone maker was "paid 15 basis points ( i.e. , 0.15 percent) on the value of all U.S. credit transactions and 0.5 cents ($0.005) on all U.S. debit," according to the lawsuit. Apple's reluctance to open up NFC tap-to-pay to third-party developers was allegedly another way the company maintained Mastercard and Visa's position and allowed them to drive up fees. However those claims were argued, it wasn't enough to convince the judge. He described them as "a slew of circumstantial allegations," according to Reuters , though he was at least open to the lawsuit being amended and refiled in the future. Since 2023, Apple has made at least one significant change to how Apple Pay and NFC payments work. As part of its compliance with the European Union's Digital Markets Act, Apple opened up NFC tap-to-pay transactions to any developer building their own contactless payments system, whether they're in Europe, the US or the UK.

An NYC mom thought she was buying Billie Eilish concert tickets online. She wound up with a cautionary tale.
NYC mom shares cautionary tale after she thought she was buying concert tickets online NYC mom shares cautionary tale after she thought she was buying concert tickets online NYC mom shares cautionary tale after she thought she was buying concert tickets online A New York City mother said she paid hundreds for her girls to see pop star Billie Eilish on Long Island this fall, but instead of tickets, she got a costly lesson. Sadia Brangan said she couldn't find tickets on a trusted website like Ticketmaster. Her daughters, however, found what appeared to be another teen selling extra tickets online. A video posted on TikTok featured a young woman dancing, with the words "I'm selling 3 tickets for Billie Eilish" printed on the screen. "Everything, to me, seemed legitimate," Brangan said. Brangan's daughter messaged the account. "I said let's do [American Express], because AmEx has more protection for me," Brangan said. "Came back, no. She doesn't want AmEx. She needs to do Apple Cash." Using Apple Cash, the family sent $380 to one email address, and then $125 to another. "Go and get your lawyer" Suddenly, the seller refused to release any tickets, until she got more money. When the family asked for a refund, the seller replied "go and get your lawyer." CBS News New York tried calling and messaging the person selling the tickets, but got blocked. Brangan said she did not know who the seller is. "She's going to get more money out of other girls," Brangan said. Even if you have a name, it's risky to buy goods or services from a stranger online. Last month, CBS News New York reported on women who said they were ghosted after giving an influencer thousands for a course. The red flag in this case: The seller would only accept payment through Apple Cash or Zelle. Both companies say you should only use their digital payment platform with people that you know and trust. Once that money leaves your account, it's gone. A credit card typically offers more fraud protection than other payment methods. If you're a victim of fraud, you have 60 days to request a refund. Meanwhile, TikTok said it took down the video offering the sale of the tickets for violating its guidelines. You can find out more about that here.

Apple Pay Down: Global Outage Causes Payment Chaos For Millions
Apple Pay experienced a significant global outage on Friday, May 16, 2025, leaving users unable to make purchases or access funds. The disruption began at approximately 8:14 PM IST and affected related services, including Apple Wallet, Apple Card, and Apple Cash. Apple's System Status page indicated that the issues were resolved by 10:31 PM IST. With over 745 million users worldwide, including more than 60 million in the US, Apple Pay is a cornerstone of the company's digital ecosystem. While Apple did not specify the number of users impacted, it acknowledged that "some users may have experienced an issue with this service." Outage-tracking site DownDetector recorded over 2,000 user reports in the US, with complaints focusing on payment failures and difficulties transferring funds. Frustrated users took to social media platforms to express their concerns and seek information. DownDetector's outage map showed widespread Apple Pay issues in major US cities, including New York City, Los Angeles, and Chicago, as well as smaller-scale outages in the UK and parts of Europe, affecting users' ability to make transactions and access funds. Widespread disruptions were reported across America. Hundreds of Apple Pay users reported issues on DownDetector and social media, with many receiving an error message stating, "Cannot receive payments sent with Apple Cash at this time." "This is the problem with handing everything over to the technocracy. Apps and services run on #ApplePay, and when it goes down... transactions completely stop," commented a user. "Apple's Response? Do you think Apple should be more transparent about outages like this? How quickly should they acknowledge and fix the issue"? wrote another user. 'Apple Pay being down is the ultimate example of why a cashless society is dystopian. Cash must live on so we are free'. wrote a third user on X (formerly known as Twitter).
