Apple Hopes Tennis Will Remind You the Apple Sports App Exists

Apple is adding a few new capabilities to the Apple Sports app that it hopes will convince you to actually download the thing. Its biggest item on the list of additions: tennis. For the first time, Apple Sports will now be able to track and relay tennis scores in real time. In Apple's own words: 'Tennis fans can access live scores for Grand Slam and 1000-level tournaments, and can track every point across all men's and women's singles matches, beginning with Wimbledon.' No disrespect—I'm not a huge fan of tennis even though I've been to the U.S. Open before—but it's a little too rich (literally dollar-wise) for my taste. That doesn't mean there aren't plenty of people out there who are big tennis fans, though, so maybe a little dose of Wimbledon will go a long way. If tennis isn't enough for you, Apple is also introducing some quality-of-life features, like the ability to choose which teams show first in the home section of the app. 'Favorite teams always appear at the top, giving fans instant access to the scores and updates they care about the most,' says Apple in a statement. That's not really a game-changer, but it's better than having to sort through a bunch of games and leagues you don't really care about just to confirm your precious Buffalo Bills are losing to the Chiefs in the AFC championship once again. As usual, you'll be able to track your scores—including the newly added tennis matches—through Live Activities if you so choose, which means you get real-time updates on your iPhone's lock screen. There's still no widget for Apple Sports yet, though, but Apple said in a briefing with press that it's always thinking of new ways to spruce up the app and stopped short of ruling widgets out completely. If you're reading this and wondering, what the hell is the Apple Sports app? Or maybe you knew about the app but have entirely forgotten its existence, I wouldn't blame you. Apple Sports was introduced as a standalone app last year, and has somewhat silently chugged along since then, adding football scores and live activities last August. To be honest, the purpose of an Apple Sports app kind of confuses me. I get that modern-day Apple is as much a software-as-a-service company as it is the maker of the iPhone, and funneling iPhone users towards streaming services like Apple TV+ could be a big win, but sports are often an unwieldy beast—or at least the ones that are worth streaming on your platform are, for example, the NFL. For now, Apple is relying on relatively minor leagues like the MLS and only some MLB games to convince sports fans to subscribe to Apple TV+, which ain't nothing, but also aren't exactly the most-watched sporting events in the U.S. If Apple Sports is going to fulfill its mission as a conduit to streaming sports, Apple has a lot of work cut out for it in the licensing department, and unfortunately Google and YouTube already seem to have the NFL in their corner. But hey, my tastes aside, I guess playing ball (tennis in this case) isn't a bad start.

Apple's newest app update just made following tennis a whole lot simpler in time for Wimbledon

Just ahead of Wimbledon, Apple has updated its free Apple Sports app to support tennis. The addition brings real-time scores for both Grand Slam and 1000-level tournaments, starting with Wimbledon 2025. The Apple Sports app had added tennis to its list of supported sports. | Image credit — Apple Tennis fans can now follow every point from all men's and women's singles matches. Scores update live, just like they already do for other leagues supported in the app, such as the NBA and NFL. Fans can track their favorite players throughout the tournament, from the opening round to the finals. Alongside tennis support, Apple Sports also received a redesigned home screen. The updated layout allows fans to customize their experience more easily. Events are now grouped by league, and users can set the order they appear in. Teams marked as favorites are pinned to the top, giving quick access to relevant scores and match updates. Live Activities are also available for tennis matches. This feature sends real-time updates to the iPhone Lock Screen and Apple Watch, so fans can follow the action without constantly checking the app. Another existing feature, Game Card Sharing, allows users to share matchup cards from supported leagues with friends. Tennis matches are also supported by Live Activities. | Image credit — Apple The app remains free to use and is available only on iPhone. While the update doesn't include tennis video highlights or analysis, it does focus on quick score delivery and basic match stats. It's aimed at fans who want simple, real-time information without extra content or clutter. Even though I'm not personally into tennis, I've found the Apple Sports app useful for staying on top of other leagues. For those who follow Wimbledon and other major tournaments, this is a practical new way to track matches throughout the season. Apple's sports app launched earlier this year and has slowly added support for more leagues and features. Tennis is the latest step in that rollout. With the new home screen experience and fast score tracking, the app is becoming more customizable and useful for different types of fans. For anyone looking for a simple way to keep up with live scores during Wimbledon, this update comes at the right time. It's a small but meaningful step forward in Apple's growing effort to build a reliable sports platform for iPhone users. Secure your connection now at a bargain price! A Popular iPhone App Just Got a Simple Yet Significant New Feature

Apple is finally rolling out some key updates to one of its newer iPhone apps. If you don't use Apple Sports as your default sports app, I'd highly recommend trying it. Unlike other popular sports apps, like ESPN, Apple Sports cuts out the bloat — advertisements, news and rumor articles — and just gives you quick access to real-time game scores and stats. It's a minimalist app that's incredibly easy to navigate. But the coolest thing about Apple Sports is that it makes using Live Activities — the feature where your favorite team's games appear right on your Lock Screen — super easy. And, if you find a one-off game that you want to keep track of, a quick tap of the Live Activity icon will get it to show up on your Lock Screen, too. That said, as somebody who uses Apple Sports every day, I'll admit the app isn't perfect. It's pretty barebones and, most significantly, some popular sports haven't been supported. Off the top of my head, tennis and golf, as well as some important competitions, such as FIFA's current Club World Cup, have been notable omissions. But that looks set to change. Today, Apple is adding a simple yet neat new feature to Apple Sports, as well as rolling out support for a new sport. Apple has introduced a new 'Home' section to the Apple Sports app, which will allow you to customize and better organize your favorite teams, leagues and competitions to appear in the app based on your preferences. The press release states: 'Events and matchups are now grouped by league, with intuitive controls for fans to set their preferred order, ensuring their top leagues appear first. Favorite teams always appear at the top, giving fans instant access to the scores and updates they care about the most.' Those who have favorited several teams or competitions can now edit which of them appears at the top of the new Home section. To do this, select Home in the top-right > select Edit > and drag and reorder as you see fit. The other big update is that Apple is finally adding support for Men's and Women's tennis, which had been one of the biggest omissions (along with golf) to date. The addition of tennis comes at an opportune time — Wimbledon begins next week. According to Apple, its sports app will have support for over 1,000 tennis tournaments, including the Grand Slams. The updated app will allow users to track specific players' progress throughout the tournament, just like you've been able to do so with other sports teams — yes, each of their matchups will appear as a Live Activity on your iPhone's Lock Screen. Apple is rolling out this update — technically 'version 3.0' — to Apple Sports right now. Your app will update automatically in the coming days, but you can initiate it manually by following these steps: Open the App Store app on your iPhone. Select your profile icon. Tap Apps. Tap My Apps. Scroll down to Apple Sports and select 'Update.' To learn more about the new features coming to Apple Sports, check out Apple's press release. Apple Sports App Gets Tennis and More Updates

Apple continues to expand its sports offerings for mobile users. On Wednesday, the company announced new updates to the Apple Sports app that include a revamped home screen and the addition of tennis ahead of the Wimbledon championships. All the changes were launched on the app today. This tennis season, you can check out live scores (or from past tournament rounds) for men's and women's matches. Apple Sports will allow you to track points and player advancement throughout events like Grand Slam or Wimbledon. Though the app doesn't currently offer the ability to follow individual players, tournament information can be showcased on the home display if you add and customize the tennis options. Sports fans will notice that the home screen is now organized by whichever leagues you keep up with. For example, if you follow MLB, you'll see a more personalized display for your favorite teams, with game stats for yesterday, today, and information for any upcoming events. If you're following multiple sports and leagues, -- including tennis -- you can re-order which ones show up first on your screen and the app will adapt to your preferences. It offers features such as shareable game cards and real-time stats and game updates for NFL, MLS, NHL, MLB, NBA, WNBA, college sports and international soccer leagues. Its Live Activities function serves up scores and gameplay on your iPhone's lock screen or Apple Watch, and is conveniently connected to Dynamic Island.
