Play Airlines drops US flights to Iceland, while Arajet announces Boston to Dominican Republic service this fall
Play began service at Logan in spring 2022. Play was formed after WOW, another low-cost, Iceland-based airline, went out of business. The same management team from WOW formed Play. In 2022, Play CEO Birgir Jónsson stated that WOW had failed because the airline had grown too quickly. Play never grew too quickly, but instead was plagued by an oversaturated market. Arajet announces new Dominican flights to Florida, here's where, its low-fare deal
Heading to the Dominican Republic for a summer getaway? Discount Dominican airline Arajet is adding a new direct route from Miami to Punta Cana to its existing flights to Santo Domingo, starting in June. And in October, Arajet is launching a new nonstop flight three times a week from the Orlando area to Punta Cana with introductory fares starting under $140, according to a release. 'Launching service in Orlando marks another important milestone for Arajet as we continue our rapid growth across the United States,' said Víctor Pacheco Méndez, CEO and founder of Arajet. 'Florida is a cornerstone of our expansion strategy, and Orlando is the perfect place to strengthen our U.S. footprint as one of the most visited cities in the world and home to a vibrant Dominican and Latin community. "After seeing record-breaking sales and sold-out flights in Miami, expanding to Orlando is a natural next step as we grow our U.S. network and fulfill our mission of making Caribbean travel more accessible,' he said. On June 4, Arajet will expand its current South Florida service from Miami International Airport (MIA) to Santa Domingo Airport (SDQ) with a new nonstop route to Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ). Tickets for the new route, from the Orlando Sanford International Airport (SFB), are on sale now at Introductory fares are $138 per person from SFB to Punta Cana and the promo code #HOLAORLANDO gets you up to 30% off the base ticket price, not counting taxes and fees. The offer is good for one person per booking. The route begins Oct. 26, 2025, and will be available on Tuesdays, Fridays, and Sundays, the airline said. Arajet is the largest airline in the Dominican Republic. Started in 2014 as the charter flight airline Dominican Wings, it rebranded to Arajet and began offering low-cost flights in September 2022. Arajet now flies to 18 countries in North, Central and South America and the Caribbean out of two bases in Santo Domingo and Punta Cana7. Sanford airport adds low-cost carrier offering direct flights to Dominican Republic
A low-cost airline is expanding its U.S. footprint to Sanford, where starting this fall it will offer service to the Dominican Republic as the airport's first new carrier since 2021. Arajet, based in the Dominican Republic, will on Oct. 26 begin direct flights three times a week between Orlando Sanford International Airport and Punta Cana International Airport. Tickets went on sale Wednesday with fares to Punta Cana starting at $138 per person and $162 back to Sanford. 'People are screaming for lower fares,' said Victor Pacheco Mendes, who founded Arajet in 2022 and is chief executive officer. 'And we're going to deliver. … We saw a huge need for lower fares in the [Central Florida] region — but not a cheap product.' Located about 45 miles northeast of Walt Disney World, the Sanford airport has long sat in the shadow of the much-larger Orlando International Airport — which has about 40 airlines and handled more than 57 million passengers last year, making it one of the busiest airfields in the country. By comparison, the Sanford airport (SFB) had nearly 2.9 million passengers go through its gates last year. The airport markets itself as a faster and easier way to catch a flight because it's a smaller facility, but Arajet will become just the second airline providing regular service there. In an email to the Orlando Sentinel, Nicole Martz, Sanford airport's president and CEO, called Arajet's decision to fly out of the airfield an 'exciting' and 'meaningful milestone — not only for our airport but for the communities that we serve on both sides of this new route.' Martz pointed out that nearly 10,000 Seminole residents — and more than 85,000 in Central Florida — are Dominican. 'It's a vital connection that brings families, cultures and communities closer together,' she said of Arajet's route between Sanford and the Dominican Republic. Mendes added that the route will appeal to local residents who want to visit friends and family. 'We're expecting to build a strong presence in Orlando and eventually connect travelers to Santo Domingo,' he said, referring to the Dominican Republic's capital. The airline opened hubs this year in Boston, Chicago, New York and San Juan, and plans to add Miami in June, as it works to increase its U.S. presence Las Vegas-based Allegiant began offering flights out of Sanford in May 2005 and currently serves 59 U.S. destinations. Sun Country, an ultra-low-cost airline based out of Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport, offers charter flights out of the airport. In late 2021, Flair and Swoop airlines began direct trips to Canada from Sanford. But in 2023, Flair moved to Orlando's airport and Swoop integrated with WestJet, which also flies out of the larger airport. Arajet currently flies to 26 destinations, mostly in the Caribbean and South America — including Ecuador, Colombia, Brazil, Mexico, Argentina and Jamaica. The airline had nearly 1.6 million flyers last year. Mendes said the airline has 10 new Boeing 737-Max 8 jets in its fleet and plans to add three this year and four next year for a total of 17 by the end of 2026. Punta Cana's airport (PUJ) is on Hispaniola's east coast and about 125 miles from Santo Domingo. A tourist destination, Punta Cana is known for its beaches, luxury hotels and resorts.

Dominican airline Arajet continues rapid U.S. expansion
Discount Dominican carrier Arajet will begin flights between Punta Cana and Orlando Sanford Airport on Oct. 26. By November, Arajet will be flying to six U.S. destinations. The carrier began U.S. operations in April with Miami service, and its quickly growing U.S. footprint will expand to Newark and San Juan in June. Boston and Chicago O'Hare service are slated to begin in November. All of Arajet's U.S. routes go to Santo Domingo or Punta Cana. The airline also offers connecting service to points in Latin America from the Dominican Republic. Arajet will be the first carrier connecting Orlando Sanford, the city's secondary airport, with Punta Cana. JetBlue, Spirit, Frontier and Southwest fly between Orlando International Airport and Punta Cana, according to Cirium data. Arajet will operate the Orlando Sanford-Punta Cana route three times per week.

Dominican airline announces direct flights to and from Central Florida
Dominican airline Arajet announces expansion in the United States with the launch of nonstop flights from Punta Cana International Airport to Orlando Sanford International Airport. This is Arajet's sixth destination in the U.S. and second in Florida, with destinations in Miami, Boston, Chicago, New York, and San Juan.
