Women Commission's credibility is at its lowest, It should think about women and not how to help BJP: SP leader Rajeev Rai
New Delhi [India], June 30 (ANI): In the wake of National Commission for Women (NCW) member Archana Majumdar visiting the South Calcutta Law College, where three men allegedly gangraped a student on the college premises, Samajwadi Party leader Rajeev Rai accused that the Women Commission's credibility was at its lowest and urged them to think about the beleaguered women and not how to aid the BJP. Rajeev Rai said, 'Whenever such incidents happen against women, the Women's Commission should go. But this BJP government at the centre has made such conditions for these independent institutions that this is the same women's commission where the SC has to slam the BJP govt in the Hathras case, and then this govt took some action. This is the same Women's Commission that has never gone to Manipur. Their work is only to condemn incidents in non-BJP-ruled states. Their credibility is at its lowest. I would request the women's commission that they should think about the women and not where they can help the BJP and harm the opposition.' National Commission for Women (NCW) member Archana Majumdar on Sunday reiterated the commission's duty to support and protect women in times of crisis, working towards their safety and well-being. She emphasised the NCW's role in ensuring the safety and support of women in crisis, particularly in cases where crimes are being suppressed. Majumdar visited Kolkata to investigate the alleged gangrape case at South Calcutta Law College. During her visit, she met with the officer-in-charge and discussed the case's progress. The NCW team plans to visit the victim's house to assess the situation, understand the family's needs, and evaluate the police's response. The NCW member was informed that the medical report and FIR were received within a single day, showcasing prompt police action without political interference. 'We have spoken to the officer-in-charge, who informed us that the first visit will be to the girl's house in Champahati, where we will speak with her father, mother, and any other legal guardian. We will ask the family about the current situation, what actually happened, whether proper protection has been given, whether the police took timely and appropriate action, and if the family needs any further help. We will also inquire about the progress of the investigation... Earlier, medical and legal procedures used to take several days, even up to four days. But yesterday, we received the medical report, FIR, in a single day. This shows that if police work without political interference, everything can be done promptly...' Majumdar told ANI. Majumdar highlighted that crimes against women are a widespread issue, not limited to Kolkata or West Bengal, but require immediate attention and action. 'Such incidents are happening everywhere. Just three days ago, we were in Kalyani for a public hearing about another case, where a man from another community entered a home in broad daylight, raped a woman, and escaped. The police reportedly took no action... Crimes against women are being suppressed in West Bengal, and we are here to ensure their safety, to support them, and to stand by them in times of crisis. That's our duty...' she further added. On June 25, a female student was allegedly gang-raped inside the South Calcutta Law College in Kolkata's Kasba area. The police have arrested four persons, including the main accused Manojit Mishra, and formed a five-member Special team to investigate the incident. (ANI)

People hit streets in Kolkata, add intensity to protests over law college gang rape
People from all walks of life on Sunday (June 29, 2025) joined protests against the gang rape of a law college student in Kolkata. Protests were held outside South Calcutta Law College, where the alleged crime had occurred on June 25, and Kasba Police Station, where the FIR has been registered. By evening, protests spilled to different parts of the city, including Jadavpur, Rashbehari, and Harzra. Supporters of 'Abhaya Mancha' a group created after rape and murder of a trainee doctor at R.G. Kar Hospital and Medical College on August 9, 2024, participated in the protests, along with students and the elderly. While activists of the political parties have been protesting over the past few days since the incident came to light, on Sunday, common people joined the protests. The protests on Sunday brought back memories of the massive protests after the horrific crime at R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital last year. Crime spot visited Earlier on Sunday, National Commission for Women (NCW) member Archana Majumdar visited the South Kolkata Law College and claimed that the police could not provide her with the details of the whereabouts of survivor. NCW chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar had written to the State's Chief Secretary seeking cooperation from the State government so that Dr. Majumdar can have access to the site of the crime and the survivor. 'Yesterday till midnight I spoke to the victim's parents. I told them I would come and meet them. They were very tense and wanted cooperation. This morning, when we tried to reach them, they did not pick up the phone. When I asked the police, they said they didn't know. When I asked SP Bauruipur, he said their house was under lock and key,' Dr. Majumdar said. The NCW member, who has earlier contested Assembly polls on a BJP ticket, also said that some rooms at the law college, which is the scene of the crime, were locked and she was not allowed to photograph. Four persons, including two present students and an ex-student and a security guard of the law college, have been arrested by Kolkata Police. The survivor in her complaint said that she was sexually assaulted by one person while two others stood outside. The involvement of Monojit Mishra, a former student leader associated with the student wing of the ruling party in the gang rape has triggered an outrage in political and social circles. The medico-legal examination and the recording of the statement by the survivor under Section 183 of BNSS have been completed. The Kolkata Police has increased the number of officers in the Special Investigation Team to probe the crime to nine. Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari on Sunday also took part in protests against the crime by participating in a Kanya Suraksha Yatra (Women Safety March) at Golpark in Kolkata. 'This incident is yet another scar on Bengal's soul under the Trinamool regime. How many more innocent girls & women must suffer due to their failure to protect our women?' Mr. Adhikari asked on social media. The BJP leader urged the parents of the deceased doctor at R.G. Kar MCH to call for a 'March to Nabanna (State Secretariat) on August 9, 2025, to mark one year of the crime and assured that people across the State will participate without any political colours or flags.

Kolkata Law College gang rape: NCW member Archana Majumdar visits crime scene
National Commission for Women (NCW) member Archana Majumdar on Sunday (June 29, 2025) visited the South Kolkata Law College, where a student was allegedly gang-raped by three persons, including an alumnus. She claimed that the police could not provide her with the details of the whereabouts of the survivor. "The commission stands beside her," she said, maintaining that the NCW's mandate is to assist a survivor as long as she wants. Majumdar said that it is necessary to speak to her parents as well. "It's a part of the investigation (by the NCW)," she said. She said that the NCW, in such cases, speaks to the survivor as well as the parents and tries to find out what they require, including security, assistance in carrying forward her education, etc. During her visit to the law college, Majumdar was seen having a verbal exchange with the police officers present. An assistant commissioner of police (ACP) present at the college said that apart from the NCW member, two others accompanying her were allowed to enter the campus after noting down their mobile numbers. "No videography or still photography will be allowed inside," he said. She later entered the campus and visited the guard room, where the alleged incident took place on June 25. "I will report that I could not complete my job," Ms. Majumdar said. Following the survivor's complaint, the police have arrested the prime accused, an alumnus, along with two students. A guard of the college was also apprehended on Saturday morning, according to the police. The police formed a five-member special investigation team (SIT), led by an assistant commissioner rank officer, to probe the case. Opposition political parties, including the BJP and the Left, have been holding protests over the alleged gang rape, claiming lawlessness in the Trinamool Congress-ruled West Bengal and lack of safety in educational institutions.

POSH Act must be enforced strongly
Tirupati: Member of the National Commission for Women (NCW) Archana Majumdar said that ensuring timely support for women through effective interdepartmental coordination can go a long way in preventing crimes against them. She participated in a Jansunwai (public hearing) held at district collectorate on Friday, along with district collector Dr S Venkateswar and SP V Harshavardhan Raju. Speaking on the occasion, Archana Majumdar stressed that addressing women's needs at the early stages by involving all relevant departments can significantly reduce the incidence of crimes. She underlined the need to establish Internal women's committees in all departments to monitor and address gender-based issues effectively. She also underlined the strict implementation of the 'POSH Act' (Prevention of Sexual Harassment at Workplace) across both government and private sectors. 'Crimes against women at workplaces can only be curbed if the POSH Act is enforced stringently,' she noted. Drawing attention to the rising number of early pregnancies due to child marriages in some states, she called for coordinated efforts between the women and child welfare department and the police department to tackle such issues. She urged officials to act proactively to prevent child marriages and their associated social challenges. District collector Dr Venkateswar assured that the district administration would implement the NCW's suggestions diligently and work in coordination with line departments to prevent crimes against women. 'Empowering women economically boosts their self-confidence,' he said. He also appreciated the role of ANMs, ASHA workers, Anganwadi staff, and women police personnel in the district's robust village and ward secretariat system. SP Harshavardhan Raju said the police department would focus on curbing crimes against women in line with the NCW's guidelines and ensure women's safety and empowerment in the district. The meeting was also attended by NCW member Rokhaya Begum, DSP (women police) Srilatha, joint director Krishna Kumari, district women and child welfare officer Vasantha Bhai, and other district officials.
