Netflix Says Goodbye to Meghan and Harry's $100 Million Deal — Here's What's Next for the Royals

Netflix Says Goodbye to Meghan and Harry's $100 Million Deal — Here's What's Next for the Royals originally appeared on Parade. Netflix will not be extending its multi-year content partnership with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, ending one of the streaming giant's most high-profile and heavily scrutinized deals. The agreement, reportedly valued at $100 million, will expire in September 2025, according to multiple outlets. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex signed the deal in 2020 following their departure from official royal duties and relocation to California. Through their production company, Archewell Productions, the couple was granted creative freedom to develop programming focused on mental health, social justice, and lifestyle. Over the course of the five-year agreement, the couple released five projects — most notably Harry & Meghan, their 2022 docuseries, which remains Netflix's most-watched documentary debut and drove high subscriber interest upon release. Other titles include Live to Lead, the animated project Pearl (later canceled), the documentary Heart of Invictus, and Meghan's lifestyle series With Love, Meghan. According to Netflix's Engagement Report released on July 17 — which covers the first half of 2025 — With Love, Meghan, which debuted in March, ranked No. 383 with 5.3 million views thus far. Another recent release, Polo, executive produced by the couple, ranked No. 3,436 with 500,000 views. While With Love, Meghan reached the global Top 10 on the week of its debut and performed well in select markets, it did not maintain high engagement over time. Season two of the series, which has already been filmed, will still premiere on the platform this fall. 'There's no animosity from either side. Things have just run their course," a source told The Sun. 'Netflix were clever in that they got a hell of a lot of viewers for the first documentary series, and knew, realistically, it would prove the zenith of content from the Montecito pair. The content got weaker from there on but, frankly, for £20million a year, anything was better than nothing." That being said, the source continued: 'Netflix [feels] they've got all they can from the couple." A Hollywood insider confirmed to People that the non-renewal reflects a broader shift in Netflix's content strategy, which is moving away from large, multi-year talent deals in favor of more flexible, project-specific arrangements. This is in line with recent changes to other high-profile partnerships, such as with Barack and Michelle Obama's Higher Ground production company. Their initial multi-project deal has transitioned into a first-look agreement. Still, the end of the Sussexes' exclusive Netflix partnership doesn't necessarily mark the end of their relationship with the platform. According to Page Six, the couple is expected to sign a first-look deal with Netflix once the current agreement expires, which would allow the streamer to have early access to future pitches without being locked into exclusive content production. The Duke and Duchess have not commented publicly on the deal's conclusion as of Wednesday morning. Markle, however, continues to promote her As Ever lifestyle brand, which launched in parallel with With Love, Meghan. Meghan Markle and Prince Harry's $100 million Netflix deal won't be renewed: Report

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's $100 million deal with Netflix will not be renewed when it expires later this year, according to several reports. The couple signed the contract in 2020, but it will not be extended beyond 2025, a Hollywood insider tells Entertainment Weekly's sister publication PEOPLE. The move reflects "a shift in Netflix's broader business strategy," according to the outlet. An anonymous source also told The Sun that "there's no animosity from either side," and that "things have just run their course."EW has reached out to representatives for Netflix and the couple for comment. Markle and Prince Harry released a a handful of non-fiction projects on the streaming giant. The impending end of the deal will reportedly not impact the rollout of season 2 of Markle's lifestyle docuseries With Love, Meghan, which premiered in March and ran for eight episodes, featuring celebrity guests like Mindy Kaling and Abigail Spencer joining the Duchess of Sussex at her home and in her kitchen. In addition to With Love, Meghan, Netflix also rolled out the Liz Garbus-directed Harry & Meghan docuseries in 2022, which included six episodes revolving around the duo's life in the United States after stepping back from their duties as senior members of the British royal family. The couple formed their Archewell Productions company after announcing their decision to leave the royal family in January 2020, with the pair signing their deal with Netflix that September. Other Archewell projects at Netflix included Live to Lead, Heart of Invictus, and Polo. "Our focus will be on creating content that informs but also gives hope," the couple said at the time in a statement to the New York Times. "As new parents, making inspirational family programming is also important to us." They added that Netflix's 'unprecedented reach" to subscribers will assist in their mission to "share impactful content that unlocks action." Their foray into entertainment wasn't entirely well received, however, with The View cohost Ana Navarro admitting on the air during a March broadcast that "some people like her, some people hate her, some people don't care," looking toward the camera while motioning toward herself. Former View cohost and conservative political commentator Meghan McCain also slammed Markle over With Love, Meghan, calling the series out of touch with audiences that Markle was attempting to reach with the show. 'I cannot stand her. I love people that I can relate to, like every other 40-year-old mom. I don't want to eat her jam,' McCain said on her digital talk series. 'I don't know what she's doing. This is like her ninth rebrand. I actually had to review her show and her podcast, and it was horrible. It was so boring." Read the original article on Entertainment Weekly

A fading public interest and falling viewership data resulted in Harry and Markle's fallout with Netflix, insiders claimed to the media outlet. One source shared, 'She had everything going for her, name, platform, and publicity, but the viewing numbers for the show were dismal. This deal is dead.' Another insider added, "Meghan and Harry rely on this deal to sustain upkeep on their $29million mansion and their huge range of staff. Without it, and without massively curbing their spending, they could be headed for bankruptcy." Markle's lifestyle series, WithLove Meghan, which debuted in March but struggles to gain traction, was ranked at 383rd position on Netflix with just 5.3 million views in the first half of the year. The modest performance paled in comparison to the unexpected streaming revival of her previous legal drama Suits, which outshone her new project. A Netflix source said, "There was initial curiosity about them, but that's evaporated. They have gone from buzzy to background noise." Talking about Markle's show, a streaming source described it as 'well-lit but flat'. Another source noted that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are "not natural content creators, they're trying to be what they think the public wants, rather than being authentic." Despite WithLove Meghan getting a green light for another season, the insiders believe that it is the streaming giant's gesture of courtesy to finish off every remaining obligation with the couple. Sources said that Netflix has 'zero interest in pursuing further projects'. One insider added, "They're just waiting for the credits to roll on this unfortunate chapter. Bosses see commissioning any more content from this pair a total waste of money."
