Red-hot Arellano, Perpetual rout foes to keep playoffs hopes alive

On-fire Arellano University and University of Perpetual Help System DALTA dominated their respective opponents to stay on course in the 18th Filoil EcoOil Preseason Cup on Saturday. The Chiefs rolled to their fourth straight win via a 92-76 win against the winless San Sebastian College-Recoletos while the ALTAs crushed the struggling Lyceum of the Philippines University, 94-79. Arellano, still on a high following three consecutive victories over defending champion Mapua, San Beda, and LPU, flexed its depth and might with King Vinoya leading the charge with 21 points, three steals, two rebounds, and an assist as they improved to 5-3. Second-generation baller Dre Miller, meanwhile, chipped in 10 markers to help the Chiefs momentarily take the fourth spot. The rebuilding Stags ended their campaign with a tough 0-9 card as new head coach Rob Labagala continued to revive San Sebastian's basketball program. In the second game, Perpetual has turned its fortunes around in the preseason showcase after earning its third win in a row to hike its record to 4-4 while the Pirates slipped to 1-6. Guard Shawn Orgo showed the way with 14 points laced with four assists, two rebounds, and two steals while transferee Josh Alcantara and veteran John Abis chipped in 11 and 10 markers apiece. The ALTAs, who opened their campaign with a dismal 1-4 record, remain in contention with one game left in their elimination assignment against the Cardinals. —JKC, GMA Integrated News

T-mc Ongotan steers Arellano past LPU; Mikey Cortez stars late in DLSU win vs. NU

T-mc Ongotan saved the day for the surging Arellano University, gutting out a narrow 78-76 win against Lyceum of the Philippines University in the Filoil EcoOil Preseason Cup on Wednesday. The versatile guard buried the game-winning layup off his own defensive rebound to give the Chiefs a slim two-point lead in the final 56 seconds of the fourth quarter. The Pirates had several chances to tie or seize the lead, but back-to-back turnovers proved costly, allowing Arellano to pull away and secure its third straight win for a 4–3 record. Ongotan tallied 10 points laced with three rebounds, three assists, three steals, and one block while Charles Libang chipped in 11 markers, six boards, and a steal as Arellano. The win marked Arellano's third straight upset over NCAA Season 100 Final Four teams, having previously taken down defending champion Mapúa University and perennial contender San Beda University. Meanwhile, De La Salle University averted a collapse with a 69-64 escape victory against National University to preserve its unbeaten slate in the preseason showcase. The Green Archers nearly wasted a 13-point deficit, but hung tough behind timely baskets from Mikey Cortez, the younger brother of transferee Jacob, as they went 3-0 in the UAAP bracket. Cortez sank the layup that gave the reigning UAAP champions a slim 63-59 lead before burying a massive three-pointer off a cross-court pass from Mason Amos to make it a five-point cushion in the final 28 seconds. Kean Baclaan then sealed it from the stripe to deal his former team its second straight loss. Baclaan top-scored with 18 points while the older Cortez chipped in 11 markers, five rebounds, and two steals. —JKC, GMA Integrated News

Filoil: Arellano escapes San Beda for back-to-back wins

Arellano University held off a furious late rally by San Beda University to escape with a hard-fought 73-70 victory in the 18th Filoil EcoOil Preseason Cup on Monday. The Chiefs built a crucial 72-67 lead in the last 20 seconds of the fourth period after back-to-back baskets from T-mc Ongotan and Ernjay Geronimo. But Penny Estacio was quick to atone for a previous miss from downtown, sinking a huge three-pointer off a Nygel Gonzales pass to cut The Red Lions' deficit to two, 70-72, with five ticks left. Geronimo then calmly split his charities after grabbing a foul from Ismael Culdora, sealing the victory for the Chiefs. King Vinoya led the charge off the bench after pouring in 13 points laced with three rebounds while Ongotan and Yuan Camay chipped in 11 and 10 markers each as the Chiefs cruised to their second consecutive win for an improved 3-3 card. The Red Lions, who have just wrapped up their Spain training camp in preparation for NCAA Season 101, fell to 1-2 record. New recruit Agjanti Miller proved his worth despite the loss, posting a double-double effort of 20 points and 11 rebounds together with three assists and two steals while Estacio tallied 15 markers. In another game, Adamson University needed an extra period to pull off a 71-67 overtime win against University of the East and end its dry spell in the UAAP bracket. Matt Erolon buried a three-pointer that gave them a slim 66-65 lead in the overtime before Mudiaga Ojarikre's dunk put the punctuation for the Soaring Falcons. Erolon top-scored with 17 points while Ray Allen Torres and John Earl Medina each chipped in 11 markers as they improved to 1-3 while sending the Red Warriors to a 0-4 slate. —Bea Micaller/JMB, GMA Integrated News
