Muslim hawker assaulted in Meerut; attempt to create fear, says opposition
After a Muslim cloth peddler was brutally assaulted at Fatehpur Narayan village, under Kithor police station limits, in Meerut district, opposition parties alleged on Sunday that the incident was a targeted attack designed to create fear. While villagers and police claimed Arif was mistaken for a thief, the victim's wife alleged that they were being forced to modify the complaint by the police. 'We have submitted a petition; the case is yet to be registered. My husband, who was selling clothes, was beaten, and now we are being pressured to change the petition by the Sub-Inspector,' said Tausima, the victim's wife, in a viral video. The Hindu reached out to the Meerut police, including the Circle Officer, but failed to get any response. Mob attack The incident happened on July 26. The victim, along with one companion, was selling clothes in the village when 10-15 people gathered and began calling him a thief, demanded his Aadhar card, and proceeded to beat him up. He was taken to Meerut Medical College for treatment. 'This incident shows that there is a complete breakdown of law and order in the state. No one has the right to take the law into their hands; some people emboldened by the dispensation are attempting to create a Jangal Raj kind of situation in U.P.; it is a lynching attempt that aims to create fear,' said Imran Masood, Lok Sabha MP and a senior Congress leader. Lok Sabha MP from Ghazipur, Afzal Ansari, said, 'I condemn this incident, it is clear that the accused have no fear of the administration and rule of law. They know no proper action will be taken, and this encourages them to attack poor Muslims.'

The 23-year-old, who was captain of Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) during the team's pre-season stint in Spain, said the time abroad has further motivated him ahead of the Super League season starting next month. "I'm honoured by the trust placed in me. Rather than taking it as pressure, I saw it as an opportunity for me to prove myself both as a player and leader," said Arif after being announced as sportswear brand Puma's newest ambassador yesterday. "I learned a lot from that experience." Arif said there is no rivalry between local-born and heritage players in the national squad. "The presence of heritage players has been a big help to the team from time to time," he said. Arif also said the players are fully focused on preparing for September's friendlies against Singapore and Palestine, and declined to comment on Malaysia's withdrawal from the 2025 CAFA Nations Cup. "It doesn't affect me, I'm just focused on what lies ahead. Preparation is important, even in a friendly game. We need to be fully prepared for our next matches regardless of who we play," he said. The Harimau Malaya will play friendly matches against Singapore on Sept 4 and Palestine on Sept 8.

Arif Aiman ready for more responsibilities after Spanish stint
KUALA LUMPUR: Winger Arif Aiman Hanapi is ready to step up on all fronts this season, both for club and country, following a transformative pre-season stint in Spain. Appointed as Puma Football's latest ambassador today, the Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) star said the training camp in Europe had given him renewed belief. "The (M-League) season is about to start, and I've prepared intensely. I spent pre-season in Spain and gained a lot of experience and confidence from it," said the 22-year-old. "I learned a lot facing strong and competitive European teams. Preparation is always the key to my success, not just for every season, but for every moment ahead." Arif, who captained the JDT team in Spain, said the armband had only inspired him to grow further. "It was an honour, and I'm proud of the trust given to me. I didn't see it as pressure, but as an opportunity to showcase myself as a player and as a captain. I've learned a lot from it." On the presence of naturalised heritage players in the national team, Arif said: "The arrival of new players and heritage players helps me to become a better player. These are guys who've played in top leagues like Turkey and Portugal, and I'm learning from them." He also addressed the growing debate among fans over Harimau Malaya's recent withdrawal from the Central Asian Football Association Nations Cup in favour of friendlies against Singapore and Palestine on Sept 4 and 8 respectively. "As a player, I don't focus on the outside noise. I'm just concentrating on what's ahead of me now," he said.

Smart B40 kids glad for State Government's support

Kota Kinabalu: Forty outstanding Sabah students who have been awarded the Sabah State Excellence Scholarship Award (ABCNS) by Yayasan Sabah say it will ease the financial burden their families would otherwise face. The scholarships cover tuition fees, accommodation, living allowances, flight tickets and learning materials for recipients pursuing foundation and diploma programmes at leading Malaysian universities. Joyce Nicole Nicholas Mojugit, 18, from Penampang, received the good news through a phone call from her former teacher. 'I felt touched and indescribably happy. I was also relieved knowing that the cost of my studies would not burden my family,' said Joyce, who is pursuing Foundation in Science at Universiti Teknologi Mara (Uitm) with aspirations to become a paediatrician. As the second of three siblings raised by a single mother, Joyce represents the scholarship's target demographic of high-achieving students from financially disadvantaged backgrounds. From Kota Kinabalu, 17-year-old Adam Hariz Sulhajji, studying Foundation in Agricultural Science at Universiti Putra Malaysia, said he was extremely touched and overjoyed upon receiving the award. 'I was extremely touched and overjoyed when I was offered the ABCNS sponsorship. I felt appreciated and even more motivated to pursue my dreams,' said the aspiring veterinarian. 'This sponsorship not only eases my family's financial burden but also demonstrates trust in my potential to become a responsible and successful individual for our State,' he said. Intan Syurayanie Sofea, 18, from Kudat, called the ABCNS award one of the greatest achievements of her life. The eldest of five siblings is now pursuing Foundation in Life Sciences at University of Malaya without the financial pressure that previously threatened her educational aspirations. 'Do not be discouraged by a less fortunate family background. We must work hard and have faith in our ability to achieve excellent results to qualify for the ABCNS scholarship,' said Intan, who aims to become a chemist. She views the scholarship not just as financial support, but as a driving force for success and a means to give back to society. Mohammad Arif Mohammad Adam, 18, from Kota Kinabalu, expressed surprise at receiving the award given the competitive selection process. 'Educational sponsorship is not just financial aid, it embodies the State's hope for us to drive its progress,' said the aspiring chemical engineer now studying A-levels at Kolej Yayasan UEM. Mohammad Nazrin Syah Abdul Shah, 18, will enrol in Aircraft Maintenance Engineering at University Kuala Lumpur Malaysian Institute of Aviation Technology (UniKL Miat). He said the scholarship's comprehensive support package allows students to focus on maintaining academic excellence without worrying about financial challenges. From Sandakan, Yap Kai Vun, 18, studying Foundation of Physical Science at University of Malaya, spoke about the programme's impact on rural and disadvantaged communities. 'This scholarship will significantly ease the financial strain on my family, as we're not from a high-income background,' said the aspiring cyber security engineer. The ABCNS programme has operated for over 30 years as Yayasan Sabah Group's flagship initiative to ensure academic excellence remains accessible regardless of students' socioeconomic backgrounds. Recipients are selected based on outstanding SPM results, leadership potential and financial need. The scholarship programme is a notable investment in Sabah's human capital development, with recipients expected to contribute to the State's economic and social progress upon graduation. All scholars are required to maintain academic excellence throughout their studies and demonstrate commitment to serving their communities.
