Nissan's all-new 2026 LEAF EV comes at a critical time for automaker
Nissan (NSANY) revealed the all-new 2026 LEAF EV, a big update to one of the original mainstream EVs offered in America. But the updated, compact EV comes at a precarious time for the automaker. The new LEAF features a more standard design, an update to the prior-generation LEAF that looked like a hatchback version of the entry-level Versa. Nissan went more upmarket with the LEAF, giving it a desirable crossover compact SUV form factor, along with looks inspired by its big brother, the Ariya EV. Though the car features a new design, Nissan wanted to maintain the original LEAF's low pricing. 'We have not released final pricing on the vehicle, but fair to assume early on that [it will be in] the very low $30's [thousands],' with higher trims reaching $40,000, said Ponz Pandikuthira, senior vice president and chief planning officer for Nissan Americas. While that's a bit more than the current LEAF, which starts at $28,140, Pandikuthria believes what's most important is maintaining a similar monthly payment, a metric Nissan will try to maintain when the LEAF goes on sale later this year. Pandikuthria, whose role includes defining Nissan's future product portfolio and profitability, believes the new LEAF is a much-improved update to a car that's sold 700,000 units since its 2010 debut but 'never won any beauty pageants,' he said. The LEAF will come in a front-wheel-drive-only configuration, with one electric motor driving the front wheels, but that means higher efficiency, translating to an estimated 303-mile range from its 75-kWh battery pack, a huge jump from the 212-mile range of the current LEAF SV Plus. The new LEAF will also come with Tesla's NACS inlet port built in, providing easy access to Tesla's ubiquitous Supercharger network. Speaking of Tesla (TSLA), the EV king is one of the brands Nissan is targeting, with the automaker shooting for a 70% conquest rate, Pandikuthria said. With the cheapest Model 3 coming in at around $42,500, there is an opportunity. But Nissan faces a potential hurdle with tariffs. President Trump's auto sector tariffs of 25% apply to the Japanese-built LEAF, meaning an additional $7,500 in extra costs for the car, the majority of which Nissan will likely have to pass to the consumer. And the US and Japan left this week's G7 meeting without a trade deal. Tariffs aside, Nissan is in a tough spot. The company posted a net loss of around $4.6 billion for fiscal 2024, and new CEO Iván Espinosa is targeting 20,000 job cuts and the closure of seven of its 17 global plants by 2027. That being said, Nissan is trying to stem the losses in important markets like China and the US. The company intends to release 10 new and updated vehicles in North America by 2027. The new LEAF is one of them. And Nissan needs it to be a hit. Pras Subramanian is the lead auto reporter for Yahoo Finance. You can follow him on X and on Instagram.

New pictures of 2025 Nissan Leaf before imminent debut
The new third-generation Nissan Leaf is about to have its global reveal, ahead of a formal launch later in the year. It's around 4.5m long and will have a maximum range of almost 600km. Nissan says it will build the new crossover in Sunderland alongside the electric Juke. Not much more is known at this point. However, Nissan has released a video outlining its major attributes. Despite the new Leaf's markedly different shape and positioning from its predecessor, its development was heavily influenced by experience from the earlier generation cars. Read our review of an earlier Leaf. Nissan's global product strategy boss, Richard Candler, stated: 'Leaf is an icon for us. It's one of our core 'heartbeat' models. 'We've sold around 700,000 Leafs since 2010, with over 28 billion kilometres covered by our customers, so we have really substantial, real-world insight about the customer…' One obvious improvement is in claimed aerodynamic efficiency, with the new coupe-styled Leaf touting a drag coefficient of 0.25. That's down from the Mk2's Cd of 0.28. That low figure will be instrumental in the Leaf achieving a claimed maximum range of almost 600km. The size of the battery pack is unknown. An interesting option is an electrochromic dimming panoramic roof with heat shielding. Nissan says no physical blind is needed beneath, meaning no issue with rear seat headroom. The new Leaf crossover utilises the Alliance's CMF-EV platform, which is currently used by Ariya EV and also upcoming electric Juke. Nissan's global design boss, Alfonso Albaisa, said the new Leaf is 'about democratising technology'. He added: 'It's very modern, simple and nice. We wanted something tailored, handsome, well-proportioned, with a super-tech interior that feels open and cool.' While no more detail was forthcoming, Leaf will get Nissan's latest in-car systems, enabled by its updated Car and Connected Service (CCS) platform. This features a Google-based infotainment system and advanced driver assistance systems. European product boss, François Bailly, said that Leaf has 'all the things that make your life easier. 'We are confident we have something that is unique, and we're really happy with this car.'

You Could Lease This EV For as Little as $129 Per Month
The 2025 model year marks the Nissan Ariya's third year on the market, and there's never been a better time to get behind the wheel. Nissan is offering an almost unbelievable lease deal on the Ariya through June 2nd. Depending on your location, you could lease an Ariya EV for as little as $129 per month on a 36-month lease term. This deal requires a $4,409 down payment and up to 10,000 miles allowed per year. EVs have waxed and waned over the years, but the Nissan Ariya has kept pace fairly well. With a maximum range of 289 miles, the Ariya leans towards the middle of its segment. Capable of charging from 10% to 80% in 35 to 40 minutes depending on battery size, Nissan's electric crossover can be great as a daily driver and weekend road trip warrior. In terms of performance, the Ariya's electric motors deliver 214 to 389 horsepower, depending on configuration. All Nissan Ariya models ride on athletic 19-inch wheels that pair well with LED headlights. A heated, leather-wrapped steering wheel comes standard, as do heated front seats. In terms of tech, the Ariya EV boasts a standard wireless smartphone charger, 12.3-inch touchscreen display, and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. Like all Nissan models, the Ariya comes with a full suite of standard safety systems. Nissan is offering a sweet lease deal through June 2nd, but just how good of a deal you can get largely depends on your location. The lease term runs 36 months with an allowance of 10,000 miles per year. Keep in mind that Nissan is also offering $1,000 in loyalty cash for current Nissan and Infiniti lessees and owners that can be applied to a new Ariya lease. Those located in the Denver area can get one of the best Ariya EV deals in the country, with a $129 monthly lease payment and just $929 due at signing. In Los Angeles, you can get behind the wheel of a new Ariya for as little as $129 per month and $4,409 due at signing. Residents of the Seattle, Washington, area can get a similar deal: $149 per month with a $4,879 down payment. Meanwhile, Austin, Chicago, Charlotte, and Miami all have a similar Nissan Ariya lease deal: $289 per month with a $4,909 initial payment. Head over to New York City, and a 2025 Nissan Ariya lease will cost you $149 monthly, with $5,679 due at signing. The Nissan Ariya may have shed a few trim levels, but it gained more standard equipment, like a wireless smartphone charging pad, across the board for the 2025 model year. Available from $39,770 MSRP, Nissan's family-sized EV is already a better value than many of its rivals. If you've been considering making the switch to an EV, now could be the best time to get behind the wheel of a Nissan Ariya. Lease offers can vary based on location, vehicle configuration (trims, options), and are subject to credit approval. Advertised monthly payments don't necessarily include taxes, title, registration, and other potential fees.
