Mammoth sign C Jack McBain to five-year deal
July 8 - The Utah Mammoth re-signed center Jack McBain to a five-year, $21.25 million contract on Monday. The contract carries an average annual value (AAV) of $4.25 million. The deal was announced a day after the team elected to take McBain, a restricted free agent, to salary arbitration. McBain, 25, set career highs in goals (13) and points (27) while playing all 82 games last season, his fourth with the franchise. "Jack is an important part of the championship-caliber team we are building, and we look forward to having him back on our roster for the foreseeable future," Utah general manager Bill Armstrong said. The 6-foot-4, 219-pounder has tallied 82 points in 241 regular-season games with Utah and the Arizona Coyotes since being selected in the third round of the 2018 draft by the Minnesota Wild. --Field Level Media

Maple Leafs GM hopeful in acquiring 'dynamic' playmaker Matias Maccelli
Article content After he was named to the NHL's all-rookie team in 2022-23 with the Arizona Coyotes, Maccelli had 17 goals and 40 assists in 82 games in 2023-24. 'He's a dynamic playmaker, and when you look at some of the areas that we need to address, playmaking ability was one of them,' Treliving said. 'There's a bet here on a player that we think can rebound from the season he had and with some of the players that we have. 'Ultimately, it will come down to the fits and where they all go. We just felt, at the price that it cost us, that this was a chance for a young player who has some dynamic skill and ability, it was worth the bet.' To get the 24-year-old Finland native, Treliving sent a third-round pick in 2027 to Utah. If the Leafs make the playoffs next season and Maccelli has at least 51 points, the pick becomes a second-round choice in 2029. Hours after the Maccelli trade, the Leafs re-signed fourth-line winger Steven Lorentz to a three-year extension with an average annual value of $1.35 million US. 'Stevie's come in and fit really well with our group (after coming to camp last year on a PTO),' Treliving said. 'He's happy here. What's the old saying: 'Don't something with happy.' I'm glad it worked out. It's good to have Steve back.'

Maple Leafs acquire Matias Maccelli from Utah for a conditional third-round draft pick
The Maple Leafs have acquired playmaking winger Matias Maccelli from the Utah Mammoth for a conditional third-round draft pick in 2027. Maccelli had eight goals, 10 assists in 55 games in an injury-filled season in Utah last year. The five-foot-11, 185-pound forward showed himself to be a playmaking winger in two prior seasons with the Arizona Coyotes, with 11 goals and 38 assists in 2022-23 and 17 goals and 40 assists in 2023-24. Maccelli, 24, has one year left at a cap hit of $3.425 million (U.S.) . He'll be a restricted free agent in a year. Should the Leafs earn a playoff berth and Maccelli records at least 51 points in 2025-26, the pick will be a second-rounder in 2029. The Finnish player was a fourth-round pick of the Coyotes in 2019.

Report: Sabres trade JJ Peterka to Mammoth to acquire Kesselring, Doan
The 23-year-old Peterka is coming off consecutive 25-plus goal seasons, and was scheduled to become a restricted free agent next week. He is anticipated to already be in discussions on a new contract with Utah. Doan, a 23-year-old winger, is the son of longtime Arizona Coyotes star Shane Doan, and his departure is the organization's latest move that separates this Salt Lake City chapter from the past. He had seven goals and 19 points in his rookie season with Utah last year. Advertisement Kesselring, a 25-year-old defenseman, played alongside Doan for the US when it won the world championships in May for the first time since 1933. He completed his second full NHL season with seven goals and 29 points — both career highs. The Sabres were expected to shake up their roster after a disappointing finish in Lindy Ruff's first season back with the team. Buffalo finished 14th in the Eastern Conference standings and extended its NHL-record playoff drought to a 14th season. The Mammoth, meantime, acquire a promising offensive star while keeping their No. 4 pick in the NHL draft on Friday night. Advertisement

Mammoth rumors: Why Utah is a team to watch in NHL free agency
The post Mammoth rumors: Why Utah is a team to watch in NHL free agency appeared first on ClutchPoints. The Utah Mammoth are fresh off a surprisingly successful inaugural season in Salt Lake City. They were in Wild Card contention late in the season and got a solid crowd for most of their games. Now, with their new name in tow, the Mammoth are heading into NHL free agency. The Athletic's James Mirtle was at the NHL Combine and heard that Utah could be in on Mitch Marner and Nikolaj Ehlers this summer. Advertisement 'Their young core up front is only going to get better, but supporting [Clayton] Keller with better veteran depth will be priority No. 1, especially considering they seem set in goal and, if healthier than this past season, on defense too. The Mammoth have 21 NHL players signed (11 forwards, eight defensemen, and two goalies) and more than $20 million in cap space, so don't be surprised if they're in big on Marner, Nikolaj Ehlers and/or any trade targets who can put the puck in the net.' For their entire existence, the Arizona Coyotes lacked a superstar. Shane Doan became a franchise icon, Keith Tkachuk scored a lot, and they developed a few solid young players. But outside of one Western Conference Final with Doan, they never made a lot of noise. The Mammoth have to solve that problem early in their existence, even with the cupboard of young talent Arizona left them. While the Mammoth will have over $20 million to spend, they may not spend it all this summer. Nick Schmaltz, Matias Maccelli, and Barret Hayton are all entering the final year of their respective contracts. Even with the salary cap exploding over the next three years, Utah has to budget for keeping its young stars. The Mammoth have already signed Karel Vejmelka, Olli Maatta, and Ian Cole for the 2025-26 season. Could they add their first superstar in free agency?
