IBM rolls out new chips and servers, aims for simplified AI

International Business Machines on Tuesday announced a new line of data center chips and servers that it says will be more power-efficient than rivals and will simplify the process of rolling out artificial intelligence in business operations. IBM introduced its new Power11 chips on Tuesday, marking its first major update to its "Power" line of chips since 2020. These chips have traditionally vied against offerings from Intel and Advanced Micro Devices in data centers, particularly in specialized sectors such as financial services, manufacturing and healthcare. Like Nvidia's AI servers, IBM's Power systems are an integrated package of chips and software. Tom McPherson, general manager of Power systems at IBM, said the Armonk, New York-based company used that tight coupling to focus on reliability and security. The Power11 systems, available from July 25, will not need any planned downtime for software updates, and their unplanned downtime each year averages just over 30 seconds. They are also designed to detect and respond within a minute to a ransomware attack - where hackers encrypt data and then try to extract a ransom in exchange for the keys, IBM said. In the fourth quarter of this year, IBM plans to integrate Power11 with Spyre, its AI chip introduced last year. McPherson said IBM does not aim to compete with Nvidia in helping create and train AI systems, but is instead focused on simplifying AI deployment for inference, the process of putting an AI system to work in speeding up a business task. "We can integrate AI capabilities seamlessly into this for inference acceleration and help their business process improvements," McPherson said in an interview last week referring to work with early customers. "It's not going to have all the horsepower for training or anything, but it's going to have really good inferencing capabilities that are simple to integrate." IBM Study: Profit-Driven CMOs See AI as Growth Driver, but Operational Hurdles Slow Them Down

54% of surveyed executives underestimated the operational complexity of translating AI strategies into outcomes. Only 22% of surveyed organizations have established clear guidelines and guardrails for the use of AI in automated decision-making. 64% of CMO respondents are now responsible for profitability, with 58% accountable for revenue growth. ARMONK, N.Y., June 17, 2025 /CNW/ -- A new global study by the IBM (NYSE: IBM) Institute for Business Value reveals that surveyed CMOs widely acknowledge the strategic importance of AI, but face an execution gap – largely due to fragmented systems – as they adapt to a significant role shift. The global study* of 1,800 marketing and sales executives found that while 81% of CMO respondents view AI as a game-changer, 84% report that challenges with rigid, fragmented operations limit their ability to effectively harness the technology. More than half (54%) of respondents admit they underestimated the operational complexity of translating AI strategies into tangible outcomes, and only 17% feel prepared to integrate agentic AI into their processes. According to the study, only 23% of surveyed CMOs feel employees are prepared for the cultural and operational shifts brought by AI agents, and 67% of respondents see reshaping culture for emerging technology as their responsibility. With 64% of surveyed CMOs now responsible for profitability and 58% accountable for revenue growth, the research underscores the need for greater technology integration and improved cross-functional collaboration to drive business performance. In fact, respondents who report internal collaboration challenges experienced slightly lower (12%) revenue growth in 2024 versus their higher performing peers (13%) – a seemingly modest 1-point gap that could represent $140M in potential upside for an average $14B revenue base. "The companies that will dominate the next decade are the ones with the deepest AI integrations. This means starting with AI at the core of the organization and building the right operating model and team on top of that," said Jonathan Adashek, Senior Vice President, Marketing and Communications, IBM. "For many CMOs, this means being willing to admit that our current marketing model—no matter how comfortable, how familiar, or how challenging to replace—is not delivering what is needed and actively sabotaging our future." Other key findings include: As CMOs embrace AI strategies, they may be unprepared to deliver results 65% agree AI-literate talent is critical for achieving high priority objectives, yet only 21% of respondents believe they have the talent needed to achieve their goals for the next two years. 22% of surveyed organizations have established clear guidelines and guardrails for the use of AI in automated decision-making, which means roughly 8 out of 10 have work to do to guide employees through a major shift in ways of working. 62% of respondents say the pace of change creates tensions between demand and operations functions. Just under a quarter (24%) of respondents say they have technology platforms supporting consistent cross-functional collaboration, and just 44% have integrated systems for demand planning and fulfillment. 69% of surveyed CMOs acknowledge that new privacy regulations will require them to rethink their data strategy. Operational silos and fragmented technology may be hindering performance Only 28% of surveyed organizations report that the end-to-end customer experience is effectively owned and aligned across functions, which can impact financial performance. Respondents indicate that fully aligning marketing, sales and operations could unlock a 20% increase in their organization's revenue. Surveyed CMOs identify their top data-related challenges as syncing or automating workflows across multiple systems, data fragmentation and having too many tools and platforms to manage. Roughly 7 in 10 (68%) of CMOs surveyed say simplifying technology infrastructure will enhance their operational efficiency and effectiveness. When asked about their greatest challenge over the next three years, cybersecurity and data privacy top the list, followed by technology modernization, forecast accuracy and talent recruiting/retention. Jillian Gendal Helps Dancers with Disabilities Shine in the Spotlight

ARMONK, NY, UNITED STATES, May 27, 2025 / / -- Jillian Gendal is empowering young dancers with disabilities to take the stage through her initiative, Spotlight . The program is dedicated to raising money and awareness for Dancing Dreams , a New York City-based non-profit that ensures every dancer, regardless of ability, has the chance to shine. Gendal's efforts have already made a tangible impact, providing new costumes for 41 students for their Spring recital. 'Ever since I was a kid, I've loved dancing on stage,' Gendal shared. 'But performing is a privilege. Not everyone has access to the resources and support to do so, especially children with physical, emotional, and mental disabilities.' Gendal began supporting Dancing Dreams in 7th grade, donating money to the organization as part of her mitzvah project. More recently, she launched Spotlight to further her impact. She originally hoped to volunteer directly with disabled teens through a weekly one-on-one mentor program. However, the program's location in Queens limited her from doing so. Instead, she explored bringing the program to her local Westchester community but faced challenges with meeting the necessary physical therapy safety requirements. Undeterred, Gendal shifted her focus to what she could do from home: support the program's end-of-year recital on May 18th so the dancers would feel as special as possible. In just a few months, she raised over $1,000 to purchase brand new costumes for six classes of dancers, most of whom come from families with limited financial resources. 'Costumes and other props are a luxury,' explained Gendal. 'Without donations, the children are stuck with homemade costumes or previously used ones.' Wearing new costumes not only boosts the children's confidence, but it also gives their parents a sense of pride as they witness what their children have been able to achieve. 'There are really no other programs like this—where kids with varying degrees of disabilities can dance alongside one another,' Gendal said. 'It's incredibly rewarding to help them do what I've always loved. I'm so happy I get to be part of making these dancers feel special.' Gendal is already fundraising for next year's recital.
