Tomorrowland bosses give major festival update with 400k fans to begin arriving TODAY after blaze burns down main stage

The update comes after a devastating blaze tore through the heart of the site just two days before the opening of the famous EDM festival. 10 Tomorrowland's main stage was engulfed in flames on Wednesday Credit: X/BNODesk 10 The aftermath of the fire shows the festival's main stage completely burned to the ground Credit: Shutterstock Editorial 10 More than 1000 staff were working on-site at the time of the fire Credit: AFP 10 Organisers said the festival will still go ahead, even without its main stage The fire broke out around 6pm on Wednesday evening at Tomorrowland's elaborate, ice-themed main stage in Boom, Belgium. Firefighters raced to the scene, but the towering structure was quickly engulfed. Footage from the site show flames ripping through the stage as thick smoke billowed across the skyline. But despite the loss of its most iconic feature, organisers said the party is still on. Those teams are devastated. "Tomorrow, 38,000 festival-goers will arrive, we're really looking forward to that, and we're going to give them a warm welcome. We're going to make it a wonderful festival." "All of the other stages are still intact,' she added. "The intention is for the festival to go ahead. But we can't do magic, so it will be without the main stage. "Our production team will now do everything they can to make it truly special." In an earlier statement on Instagram, the festival wrote: "Due to a serious incident and fire on the Tomorrowland Mainstage, our beloved Mainstage has been severely damaged. We can confirm that no one was injured during the incident. "We are focused on finding solutions for the festival weekend… More updates and detailed information will be communicated as soon as possible." The exact cause of the blaze is still under investigation. But sources told Gazet van Antwerpen that the fire may have started while the main stage's fireworks cannons were being tested. In several online videos, what sounds like fireworks can be heard going off as the flames spread. Local firefighter François van den Eynde described the scene as nearly impossible to control. "The blaze spread very quickly," he told Rolling Stone, "likely because of the materials used." He added: "Despite all our resources, it was impossible to stop something like that. "We tried to extinguish the fire, but as soon as you realise you're not succeeding, you have to limit the damage to the rest of the festival site. That's what we did. Everything is under control." 10 Around 400,000 festival goers from across the globe attend across the festival each year Credit: Alamy 10 Steve Aoki is one of this year's headliners Credit: Getty 10 DJ'ing legend David Guetta is also one of the main performers this year Credit: Getty The mayor of Boom, Jeroen Baert, reportedly cut short his holiday in Germany to return and coordinate the emergency response, according to the Daily Star. At the time of the fire, around 1,000 staff were working on-site, but no members of the public were present. Some local residents were evacuated as emergency crews worked to prevent the flames from spreading to nearby homes and woodland. As news of the fire broke, the global dance community quickly rallied behind Tomorrowland. Global superstar DJ Martin Garrix wrote under the festival's Instagram update: "Sending so much love and happy to hear everybody is safe." Afrojack added: 'Glad everyone is safe." Charlotte de Witte, one of this year's acts, posted: "I'm speechless. My heart and thoughts go out to all of you in this hard moment." Brazilian DJ Alok commented: "We all know how strong Tomorrowland is when it comes to rising above it all. TML is more than the MainStage! Sending the best energy!" Despite the chaos, Tomorrowland 2025 remains a colossal operation - with over 600 artists performing across 16 stages over two weekends. This year's lineup includes global heavyweights like David Guetta, Swedish House Mafia, Steve Aoki, Deadmau5, Charlotte De Witte, Eric Prydz, and Dillon Francis. Now in its 19th year, the festival has long been considered the pinnacle of the electronic dance music world, attracting an estimated 400,000 fans annually. This isn't the first time Tomorrowland has been rocked by fire — in 2017, the Barcelona edition saw 22,000 fans evacuated after flames erupted hours before Steve Aoki's set. 10 Back in 2017, the festival was forced to evacuate over 22,000 people after another major fire erupted

Windsor boxer hopes recent national title helps punch path toward 2028 L.A. Olympics

Rosalind 'Soup' Canty says ever since the first few first fights she saw live, she knew she wanted to be a boxer. "I was sitting next to my grandpa, and I was like, 'I need to do this,'" said the now 21-year-old fighter. She's been around the sport her whole life: Both her parents boxed and coached. But fresh off a gold medal at an Under 23 women's national championship in Quebec, Canty says it took quite a long time to convince her dad to allow her to get into the sport. Her mother, Margaret Sidoroff-Canty, won several amateur and professional titles during a short but decorated career in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Her dad, Josh, now serves as one of Rosalind's coaches. "He's the best coach in the world," she told Windsor Morning host Amy Dodge. "I'm just super lucky to have him in my corner because he's as committed to my training as I am," she said. "He said that the only way he was going to train me is if it was for soccer, so he started training me just to get in shape for soccer," she said. "And then I started sparring and I had my first fight April of 2022." She trains out of the Border City Boxing Club in Windsor, Ont., and also works out across the border in Detroit, Mich. WATCH | Rosalind 'Soup' Canty trains in Windsor, Ont.: Canty has 55 fights under her belt in a fairly short period of time. "I've had a lot of fights," in roughly three years, she said. Aside from her recent gold, Canty also recently trained in Montreal with the national team after being carded as one of the top four female fighters of all weight classes in Canada, she says. "I have to go there multiple times to work on my training, get good sparring and get assessed by the national team coaches — [it's] amazing." Now she's eyeing the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics to represent her country. "That's the goal," she said. Canty says her pump up song before a fight is "Around the World" by Daft Punk to "get moving," saying it reminds her of how she felt when she first started watching boxing matches. "Was just so high energy and everyone yelling … was just surreal. It was crazy." According to Canty, like her parents, she makes sure to try and help others out with their training. "I train a bunch of kids at the gym and there's a couple of little girls that really look up to me and I'm in love [with them]." Canty says she got the nickname "Soup" from her dad while growing up playing soccer. She says he used to call her "Super Ras." That was shortened to "Soup" because it was a little too long to yell while she was on the field, and that's now translated into her boxing career. Canty says her next fight will more than likely be later this month as part of a local Border City Boxing Club card. "It's a really nice community, surprisingly, since the sport is literally punching people in the face." Canty says she believes boxing is important for young people, especially girls, because it teaches them how to protect themselves and instills mental confidence. "To not be scared if you're alone out in a dangerous situation," she said. "I think even if you don't want your kid to fight, I think boxing is a skill that most people …should learn. I think it's important."

Conductor David Brophy, an Irishman in Cologne: The Lyric Feature

The Lyric Feature production Der Musikmann follows conductor David Brophy's progress over his first six months with the WDR Funkhausorchester, on his new podium in Cologne; Presented by George Hamilton, the documentary observes the musical, cultural, and personal challenges this Irish conductor faces as he takes on one of the most prestigious positions in his field in Europe. Producer Michael O' Kane introduces Der Musikmann – An Irishman in Cologne below - listen above. From John Field, Michael Balfe, and Margaret Burke Sheridan in the past to James Galway and Barry Douglas in more recent times, Irish musicians have captivated audiences across Europe. To that illustrious list can now be added the name of David Brophy. His musical journey, which began in a band at home on the northside of Dublin, took in a spell playing keyboards with the National Symphony Orchestra before he opted for a career on the podium, shaping the sounds with baton in hand. David is one of music's most engaging characters, and a man I've known for a long time, collaborating on a variety of concert platforms. Watch: Daft Punk's Around the World performed by Uwaga! with David Brophy & WDR Funkhausorchester When he was appointed to the post of Chief Conductor of the WDR Rundfunkorchester in Cologne, this was too good an opportunity to miss. The Westdeutscher Rundfunk was my local radio and TV station when I lived in Germany many years ago and the personal connection expanded into a professional one when I began my career as a broadcaster in Belfast. WDR was one of the German-language stations I worked for as what's known in the business as a "stringer", a local correspondent. I was no stranger to the Funkhaus on Wallrafplatz with its famous paternoster lift, the broadcast centre in the heart of the city that's home to David Brophy's new band. What emerges is a most engaging portrait of a dedicated musician whose winning charm puts students, musicians, and indeed audiences in the palm of his hand. It already had its Irish connection through the work of the author Heinrich Böll, a native of Cologne, one of whose short stories is set in the Funkhaus and who was a regular in the café that welcomes all-comers to a corner of its ground floor. Tiring of the brashness of post-war Germany, Böll retreated to Achill Island where he wrote a journal – his Irisches Tagebuch – that captured worldwide attention when it was published in 1957. David Brophy's artistic journey has taken him in the opposite direction. Producer Michael O'Kane and I followed him to the Rhineland to find out how. We covered his debut on the podium in Cologne – an afternoon event broadcast live on the radio from the packed Klaus-von-Bismarck-Saal, the station's very own concert hall – and returned six months later for a progress report. In between, we had the opportunity to follow the part of the David Brophy career that still resides in Ireland – his performances here and his teaching work at TU Dublin in Grangegorman. What emerges is a most engaging portrait of a dedicated musician whose winning charm puts students, musicians, and indeed audiences in the palm of his hand. You may be surprised as the story takes shape, as preconceived notions give way to the colourful reality that includes the shoes he's been wearing in the orchestra's trademark shade of purple. The world of classical music is by no means all black tie and tails.
