New shirt number confirmed for Arsenal first-teamer
Albert Sambi Lokonga has been handed a new shirt number with Arsenal following the expiry of his loan spell with Sevilla. Photo via Sevilla on Instagram Albert Sambi Lokonga was among the Arsenal group returning to first-team training on Wednesday, after his loan to Sevilla expired on June 30th. Advertisement Sevilla had an option to buy in Lokonga's contract, but they opted not to activate it, meaning the midfielder has returned to his parent club. But after Lokonga signed for Sevilla, Arsenal signed Mikel Merino and handed the Spaniard the Belgian's old number – 23. As a result, Lokonga hasn't been able to reclaim the number upon his return. Photo via Instead, Lokonga has been pictured in training wearing 28, which is evidently his new number. Other Arsenal players to wear the number 28 in the last decade or so include Joe Willock, Joel Campbell, and Kieran Gibbs. The night before his return to training with Arsenal, Lokonga shared a message on his Instagram story. Advertisement 'Let's go into pre-season more focused than ever,' Lokonga wrote. 'We don't know what the next season holds yet, but I'm grateful for every experience and to every person that I get to work with, every player I play with and to every fan that I connect with. 'Grateful to live the life I live and I will continue to give everything! Let's enjoy the process before the process becomes the past.' Photo byNow 25 years old, Lokonga made 23 appearances for Sevilla in the 2024/25 campaign. He was a regular starter when fit, but a few hamstring injuries prevented him from playing a more regular role for the club. Advertisement With Sevilla performing so poorly and failing to qualify for European competition, funds will be tight this summer. The La Liga side evidently didn't feel they could afford to invest around £10m of their limited budget in making Lokonga's loan permanent. At one point it was possible Lokonga would be a free agent this summer, with Sevilla opting out of signing him and his Arsenal deal running down. But the Gunners activated their option to extend to 2026. A summer exit remains the most likely possibility, but it remains to be seen whether a club comes in for Lokonga at a decent price.

Arsenal agree new contract to avoid free agent departure
Arsenal youngster Will Sweet has put pen to paper on his first professional contract, the club have officially confirmed. Photo via Last month, the Premier League revealed that a number of Arsenal academy players were in contract talks with the club, with their deals officially set to expire at the end of June. Advertisement One of those listed was Will Sweet, but the good news is that player and club have now reached a successful resolution to extension negotiations. Arsenal have confirmed that Sweet has agreed his first professional contract, signing on with the club he's played for since the age of five. Photo via Sweet on Instagram Sweet captained the Arsenal u18s on a number of occasions in 2024/25, but he also spent time stepping up to the u21s. By the end of the season, that was where he was playing most of his football, starting nine of the final 10 games of the Gunners' Premier League 2 campaign. The 18-year-old's performances over the last couple of years have received recognition internationally, with the Wales u19s giving him his debut in 2024. He's now made five appearances for the side. Photo via Sweet on Instagram 'I feel quite honoured to be at this football club,' Sweet said. 'It's been a long time that I've been at the club so I feel like it's more of a family in the club at this point and I feel really united with the boys and hopefully I can push on this season. Advertisement 'Obviously getting to play at the Emirates for the first time (in the FA Youth Cup in February), that was quite a surreal moment for me. 'I've been coming to the Emirates for a long time, watching the first team, so getting to play on the same pitch as them is quite surreal and quite unbelievable, to be honest. 'I want to be where they are so just looking at what they do day in day out, just trying to better them really and hopefully I can be where they are soon.'

Arsenal 18yo confirms he's held talks over loan move
Arsenal goalkeeper Lucas Nygaard has revealed that the club feel he's ready for a loan move, and he's hoping to secure one after the u21 European Championships. Photo via Lucas Nygaard has had an eventful first season with Arsenal, but not always for the right reasons. The 18-year-old goalkeeper had a couple of broken bones in his debut campaign, arguably denying him a first-team debut when the opportunity arose in the League Cup in September. Advertisement 16-year-old Jack Porter ended up starting that game against Bolton Wanderers instead, but Nygaard did make 12 appearances for the Arsenal academy throughout 2024/25. Those games were enough to earn Nygaard a spot in the Denmark u21 squad for the European Championships this summer, which kicked off on Wednesday. Photo via Nygaard on Instagram Speaking to the media ahead of the Championships, Nygaard revealed that Arsenal are planning a loan move for his next step into senior football. 'We've been talking, me and Arsenal, for the past six months about me going out on loan,' Nygaard said (via Sport Witness). 'Both they and I feel that I'm ready to play some senior football and get the development that comes with it. I hope that will happen. Advertisement 'It could be anywhere, but I would also like to return to Denmark. Something in the first division would be really cool, so we're looking at that too. 'I feel ready to come back and play senior football.' Photo via For the time being, the focus is on the u21 Euros, which will run until at least June 18th for Nygaard and Denmark. If they make it out of the group, Nygaard could remain on international duty until June 28th at the latest, the day of the final. Once the tournament is turn, Nygaard's attentions will turn to finding a new home for the 2025/26 campaign. With any luck, a few positive appearances at the u21 Euros could help that process along.

From Arsenal star to drug smuggler: story of soccer player Jay Emmanuel‑Thomas' 'fall from grace'
Image via When rising football stars step off the grand stage, their retreat from limelight sometimes obscures a troubling reality: the fragility of fame, identity, and financial security. The story of Jay Emmanuel‑Thomas, once a celebrated Arsenal youth talent, illustrates how even brief glamours can unravel rapidly. Now facing a four-year prison sentence after admitting to orchestrating a plot to smuggle £600,000 worth of cannabis into the UK, Emmanuel‑Thomas's journey compels questions about athlete welfare, mental health, and the terrain of life post-career. With verified facts from reliable sources, this article explores his fall from grace—and offers insight into the overlooked vulnerabilities behind football success. What led to Jay Emmanuel's career being cut short From Arsenal Star to Drug Smuggler! 😱 The Shocking Fall of Jay Emmanuel Thomas! ⚽🚨 Jay Aston Emmanuel‑Thomas was born on December 27, 1990, in Forest Gate, London. Rising through Arsenal's fabled youth ranks from 1998, he became under‑18 captain and helped claim both the Premier Academy League and FA Youth Cup by 2009. Despite his reserve squad heroics and senior appearances, Emmanuel‑Thomas struggled to cement a first-team role. Spells at Blackpool, Doncaster, and Cardiff followed before permanent moves to Ipswich Town and Bristol City, with varying success. By late 2024, following his release from Morton amid financial strain and contract uncertainties, Emmanuel‑Thomas made a catastrophic gamble. He recruited his girlfriend and another woman, both under the impression they were carrying gold, to transport 60 kg of cannabis from Thailand to the UK. When customs intercepted two suitcases at Stansted Airport in September 2024, their scheme unravelled (via ). 'A substantial fall from grace': Jay Emmanuel's judge while passing his verdict In June 2025, Emmanuel‑Thomas pleaded guilty to importing cannabis and received a four-year prison sentence after admitting to managing the smuggling operation. Judge Alexander Mills described it as 'a substantial fall from grace,' marking the end of what he called the player's identity as a professional footballer (via His lawyer portrayed it as an 'isolated incident' born from 'significant financial hard times' after prolonged unemployment. Emmanuel‑Thomas himself expressed deep remorse, calling the past year 'emotionally unbearable' and acknowledging his actions as a 'catastrophic error of judgment' (via Senior investigators from the National Crime Agency used the case to warn the public: criminal networks prey on athletes in distress, using attractive offers to rope in unwitting couriers. Jay Emmanuel‑Thomas's descent from celebrated footballer to convicted drug smuggler is more than an isolated scandal—it's a mirror reflecting deeper vulnerabilities endemic to sport. Athletic success does not inoculate against financial insecurity, anxiety, or the allure of quick fixes. His story compels sporting institutions, teams, and player unions to strengthen mental health support and financial planning services. For the fans and aspiring athletes alike, it is also a sobering reminder: fame can fade fast, and without safety nets—both monetary and emotional—the path once lined with cheers can lead abruptly to disgrace. Watching his rise and fall prompts urgent action—for people, not just players.
