Art Hive calls for help to add accessibility ramp, inclusive mural
The Art Hive is raising funds to add an accessibility ramp and a mural to its center. The Art Hive is a creative reuse art center and workshop space located on Spring Hill Road in Staunton. The first priority for the Hive's new project is a 16-foot accessibility ramp, allowing those with disabilities better access to the facility. 'This ramp isn't just a structure – it's a symbol of access, creativity, and connection,' said Kirsten Schneider, co-owner of Art Hive. As of July 22, about $2,500 of the $3,500 goal has been reached. The plan is for the Art Hive to purchase the ramp when they reach the first $3,500 goal. In a press release on the project, the Art Center highlighted the experience of Mary Lynne Smith, who has taught free workshops and is creating a zine library at the Art Hive. 'As a queer disability advocate and long-time supporter of Art Hive, I have witnessed firsthand the transformative power of inclusive, creative spaces,' Smith said. 'I'm a bit of an annoying 'Accessibility Goldilocks' – and Art Hive, of all the spaces I've interacted with as a Staunton resident, has tried the hardest to make accommodations for me as a mobility-aid user.' Smith added, 'A heavy-weight ramp would make the space accessible for even more of us, and a mural that creates and stimulates joy is the ultimate generous gift of community for community – accessible art.' Once the ramp has been purchased and set in place, the project will move to part two; a mural on the same side of the building. 'This fundraiser is for two things that are deeply personal to me. First, to install an accessibility ramp at Art Hive. And second, to create a community mural that says loud and clear: everyone belongs,' Schneider said. 'As someone who's disabled – and proudly weird – I know what it's like to feel left out, to love something deeply but be unable to fully participate because of barriers, physical or otherwise. This ramp isn't just a structure – it's a symbol of access, creativity, and connection.' According to the press release, Staunton City Councilwoman Alice Woods and Staunton West End Business Association President Kim Harris have endorsed the project. 'Art Hive's unwavering dedication to fostering inclusivity and strengthening our local neighborhoods is truly commendable,' Woods said. 'The Everyone Is Welcome project is a shining example of work that prioritizes accessibility, community connection, and the revitalization of our shared spaces and economy.' The overall project goal is around $15,000, with about $4,600 going toward the ramp and permitting, about $9,100 going toward materials and labor for the mural, and about $1,200 for landscaping and a party when the project is complete. The Art Hive is also seeking donations and grants to help support the project. To learn more or donate, visit the project's GoFundMe page, titled "Help Build Staunton Accessibility Ramp and Mural." Tokyo's Nakagin Capsule Tower Unit to be Shown at MoMA in New York
Part of an iconic residential capsule building in Tokyo's Ginza district that was demolished in 2022 will be exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York from July 10. Designed by the late architect Kisho Kurokawa (1934-2007), the Nakagin Capsule Tower building was completed in 1972 as a housing complex comprising a total of 140 single-room housing capsules. One of the capsules, now housed in the renowned institution for modern and contemporary art, will be shown at the exhibition 'The Many Lives of the Nakagin Capsule Tower,' focusing on the building's 50-year history, until July 12, 2026. Thanks to the design using detachable and replaceable capsules, which each had about 10 square meters of space inside, the building was famous as a structure that represented Japan's Metabolism architectural movement. It is also one of the representative works of Kurokawa, who designed the National Art Center, Tokyo, and the Toshiba IHI Pavilion for the 1970 Osaka Expo. The capsules were never replaced, and the building was dismantled due to aging in 2022. The Nakagin Capsule Tower Preservation and Restoration Project, a citizen group formed by former unit owners and others to preserve the building, obtained and restored 23 capsules. The preservation group has been searching for recipients for them. To date, capsules taken from the building have been added to the collections of several prominent overseas museums, including M+, one of Asia's largest contemporary art museums in Hong Kong, the National Museum of 21st Century Arts in Rome and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Evangelos Kotsioris, assistant curator at MoMA, told The Yomiuri Shimbun in writing that the museum housed the capsule because the tower is 'one of the most important buildings of the 20th century at large.' 'The Nakagin Capsule Tower anticipated contemporary conversations about circularity in architecture, in other words, the idea that designers should not only think about the design and construction of buildings, but also their life cycles, and ultimate disassembly and repurposing of the materials that made them up,' Kotsioris wrote, adding that the museum concluded that the capsule deserves a place in MoMA's collection. '[The capsule] is a cozy space that has inspired generations of architects, and captivated the imaginations of both residents and people around the world,' Kotsioris wrote. In addition to the capsule with its interior fully restored to the state it was in when the building was completed, about 45 related materials that include photographs, films and the project's original models and drawings will be on display during the upcoming exhibition.

Foley employees save the day for Art in the Park on Mother's Day weekend
FOLEY, Ala. (WKRG) — What ended up being a beautiful Mother's Day weekend at Foley's annual Art in the Park almost wasn't. 3 arrested, accused of running pill mill at Pace Pharmacy: FDLE Art in the Park is an annual event that features arts and crafts vendors in the John B. Foley Park every Mother's Day weekend. This year, heavy rains hit the area Friday night and Saturday morning, flooding the park and leaving it with nearly 6 inches of standing water in some areas, according to a City of Foley news release. 'A lot of the vendors set up on Friday and they thought they were going to be OK. They had done everything correctly as far as sandbagging and fenders, but it just rained so much Friday night and Saturday morning,' Art Center Executive Director Chloe Salinas said. 80 vendors were slated to set up for the festival, according to the release. Salinas said Foley Parks and Recreation employees, even some who weren't scheduled to work, came in early Saturday and pumped the water out, saving the event. 'Had it not been for them getting in the pumps and getting everything done right away, we would have had to cancel for Saturday,' Salinas said. 'There was just no way we could have done it.' Salinas said only three people had been scheduled for that day, but others came in to help out to get it done faster. Those working to clean up the park for the annual event included Ryan Harrison, Freddy Cuellar, Matthew D'Agati, Joanna Blue, Michelle Gann, Wes McKenzie, Corey Ryan, Vincent Salac and Daniel Seavall. 1 woman continuously leaves sick litters of kittens at A Hope animal welfare in Milton 'They really did a great job and helped make the weekend a success,' Salinas said.
