Quebec byelection in Arthabaska riding to be held on Aug. 11
Voters in the Centre-du Québec riding of Arthabaska will be heading to the polls this summer in a byelection set for Aug. 11. The Coalition Avenir Québec (CAQ) government is expected to announce the official start of the campaign later Tuesday. The seat was left vacant in March when former MNA Éric Lefebvre made the jump into federal politics to run for the Conservative Party of Canada. Lefebvre, who had been Whip for the CAQ was sitting as an Independent since first announcing his intention to join Pierre Poilievre's party in Ottawa. Four candidates have already announced their intention to join the race to replace Lefebvre, including Éric Duhaime, leader of the Conservative Party of Quebec (PCQ). Duhaime, who has headed the party since April 2021, is hoping to finally win a seat at the National Assembly. The Parti Québécois (PQ), for its part is backing former journalist and broadcaster Alex Boissonneault, who surprised many when he stepped away from his job as the Radio-Canada morning show host in Quebec City in May. Former business leader Kevin Brasseur will be the CAQ candidate, while Québec solidaire announced health-care worker Pascale Fortin will be its candidate. The Quebec Liberal Party has not yet announced a candidate.

A person hands over his ballot paper during the Quebec provincial election on Oct. 3, 2022 in Montreal. (The Canadian Press/Ryan Remiorz) The by-election in Arthabaska, in the Centre-du-Québec region, is expected to be called officially on Tuesday by Quebec Premier François Legault, Noovo Info has learned. Voters are expected to be called to the polls on Aug. 11, and posters of the various candidates are already being installed throughout the riding. Legault's government had until September to call the by-election. The news comes a few days after the Coalition Avenir Québec (CAQ) nominated Keven Brasseur as its candidate. He is slated to face off against Quebec Conservative Party (PCQ) Leader Éric Duhaime, Parti Québécois (PQ) candidate Alex Boissonneault and Québec Solidaire's Pascale Fortin. The Quebec Liberals (PLQ) have not named a candidate. Recent polls predict a close race between the Conservatives and the PQ, with the latter leading by one per cent in voting intentions.

Journalist Alex Boissonneault to run as Parti Québécois candidate in Arthabaska byelection
Journalist Alex Boissonneault, host of Radio-Canada Québec's Première heure, will be the Parti Québécois (PQ) candidate in the Arthabaska byelection. The PQ confirmed the information on Monday, saying in a written response that 'the announcement in due form and the answers to questions will be made on Wednesday in Arthabaska.' Éric Duhaime, leader of the Quebec Conservative Party and candidate in Arthabaska, is hoping to win his party its first seat in the National Assembly in the byelection.
