Thousands Of Devotees Join 148th Rath Yatra In Ahmedabad

Ahmedabad: The 148th Rath Yatra of Lord Jagannath began in Ahmedabad on Friday morning, with thousands of devotees joining in for a glimpse of the deity. The raths or chariots of Lord Jagganath, his brother Balbhadra and sister Subhadra were pulled out of the Jagannath temple in Jamalpur area of the city by the Khalasi community as per the age-old tradition. The grand procession of the three chariots rolled on from the 400-year-old temple, and it is expected to return by 8 pm after making its way through the old city, including a few communally sensitive areas. Union Home Minister Amit Shah and his family members participated in the morning prayers at the Jagannath temple, while Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel performed 'pahind vidhi', a traditional ceremony of symbolic cleaning of roads by a golden broom. The procession, usually comprising 18 elephants, 100 trucks, 'bhahan-mandlis' (devotional groups) and 30 akhadas (local gymnasiums), will cover a distance of 16 km during the day. Several trucks have been decorated as tableaux on different themes. Throughout the day, lakhs of devotees are expected to gather on both sides of the route to pay obeisance to Lord Jagannath and his siblings. Police officials said they have made elaborate security arrangements for the procession. Nearly 23,800 security personnel have been deployed in the city to guard the annual Rath Yatra, which is expected to draw 14-15 lakh people. According to a government release, an Artificial Intelligence-based surveillance system will be used for the first time to prevent stampede-like situations. The AI-based system would notify the police and fire department in case of a fire along the route, besides alerting the police control room when too many people are gathered in a particular area, it said. About 4,500 security personnel will walk with the procession on the entire 16-km route, while 1,931 personnel will be deployed for traffic management, said officials. Several roads will remain closed to normal traffic. Senior police officials will keep a watch on the Rath Yatra procession using 2,872 body-worn cameras linked with the control room, 41 drones and 96 cameras installed at different locations and 25 watch towers. Ahead of the 148th Rath Yatra, police had organised 177 meetings of peace committees, 235 meetings of mohalla committees, 57 meetings of women's committees as well as 21 meetings with various religious leaders with the aim of maintaining communal unity and harmony, the release had said.

The footage shows people scattering in panic as mahouts struggle to regain control of the elephants. In the clip, one of the elephants can be seen charging directly toward the crowd, prompting devotees and bystanders to flee through the narrow lanes. The incident took place around 10:15 am on Friday as the Jagannath Rath Yatra procession was passing through the densely packed Khadia area of Ahmedabad, reported The Indian Express. According to officials cited by IE, a decorated elephant suddenly broke away from the group and ran in the opposite direction, triggering panic among devotees gathered along the narrow lanes of the walled city. One or two other elephants also reportedly strayed from the designated route, further adding to the chaos. The Jagannath Rath Yatra procession in Ahmedabad typically features a grand lineup of 18 elephants, around 100 trucks, devotional music groups known as bhajan mandlis, and 30 akhadas or local gymnasiums. This year, the procession will cover a 16-kilometre route over the course of the day. Several of the trucks have been decorated as thematic tableaux, showcasing various cultural and religious motifs. AI-system in place to avoid stampede An estimated 14 to 15 lakh devotees are expected to line the 16-kilometre route of the annual Jagannath Rath Yatra in Ahmedabad on Friday. To ensure crowd safety, nearly 23,800 security personnel have been deployed across the city. For the first time, an Artificial Intelligence-based surveillance system has been introduced to help monitor crowd movement and prevent potential stampede-like situations, according to an official government release. The AI system will support real-time monitoring along the procession route as lakhs gather to catch a glimpse of Lord Jagannath and his siblings.

Srikalahasti MLA requests Google official for AI-based services at temple to reduce waiting time for devotees

Srikalahasti MLA Bojjala Venkata Sudheer Reddy has requested Google to consider providing Artificial Intelligence-based services to the devotees visiting Srikalahastheeswara Swamy temple at Srikalahasti town of Tirupati district. The appeal was made to Google vice-president Chandu Thota, who visited the famous temple here on Wednesday to offer prayers. The temple is revered as 'Dakshina Kashi' and is famous for the 'Rahu Ketu Puja', a ritual meant to ward off the evil effects of the mythological serpents that is believed to bring fortune. The request appears similar to the proposal contemplated by the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) to provide AI-based services at Tirumala Sri Venkateswara temple to manage the huge inflow of devotees by reducing the waiting time. The idea is to deploy special cameras and use AI tools to recognise the visiting devotees to reduce their waiting time by factoring in various parameters. The system will calculate the darshan time based on the various queue lines running parallel, the point where they merge into one etc., to arrive at the revised darshan time. Mr. Sudheer Reddy appealed to Mr. Chandu Thota to work out a system to implement the same first at Srikalahasti on a pilot basis, so as to replicate it in other temples.

SER to use AI-based system to prevent elephant-train collisions

Rourkela: The South Eastern Railway's Chakradharpur division will implement an Artificial Intelligence-based elephant intrusion detection system (EIDS) to prevent train accidents involving the animals on railway tracks. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The system, successfully tested on June 15 and 16 along the Barabamboo-Chakradharpur-Lotapahar section, will be installed in elephant corridors like Jareikela, Bhalulata, Barsuan and Bimlagarh areas. "The testing was conducted by different firms and was successful. The system, offering the best coverage for elephant protection, will be selected for installation from among the prospective bidders. This may happen within the next few months," A K Choudhury, senior divisional commercial manager of Chakradharpur, said. EIDS employs a combination of pressure wave sensors, optical fibre cables and AI algorithms to detect approaching elephants. When elephants are detected near the tracks, the system automatically alerts railway officials, allowing them to direct approaching trains to either slow down or stop, preventing potential collisions. For the trial run, two elephants from Vantara, the wildlife rescue in Gujarat, were brought to Chakradharpur. The testing was conducted under the supervision of railway officials from the Chakradharpur division.
